I listen to the CBC. Seriously, I listen (or at least listened) to the CBC all the time in the car, I am a strong supporter of funding for public radio, and I have always believed that the CBC mattered. Now, I am having doubts.
They decided that Hockey mattered more than the Nova Scotia provincial election tonight. That pretty much kills them in my eyes. Hockey is entertainment, the election of the provinces government is real life. They scheduled themselves to cover the first two hours of the election and then planned to move over to the game, with coverage of the election moving to CBC newsworld, a channel only available to cable subscribers.
So basically, if I don’t have the money for cable I am too poor to know who my government is, but hey, gotta know what’s going on the Stanley Cup right?

We knew going into the election who was going to win. It wasn’t exactly a surprise. You could have turned on the radio.
I have cable… the point was that Hockey was deemed more important than an election. Hell, I watched the election on CTV.
I thought that was strange, too.
Suck it up butter cup! I bet you already know who won the election but to sit there and watch the boring ass shit come on. At least hockey is entertaining. And guess what i did not watch any of the election and know who won so really does it make a difference. You probaly didnt even vote and your sitting there bitchin about it. It would be a total different story if these so called politicians were hitting and checking each other to win there riding then i might watch some of the election on T.V.
Suck it up Princess, Hockey is #1 anywhere in Canada.
As for the Election, who cares who really is in power. They all lie just to get your vote anyway!!
Are you sure you’re not one of them? Because your whole message contradicts itself.
You should see if your NDP can get your retard ass a job now so you can afford cable.
logic11…you are kidding right? The CBC announced yesterday, all day, that they would be covering the election on the radio, and online…you do have the internet? Oh wait..clearly you do…unless you borrowed a computer and connection to bitch.
Plus, the election was done and over with by the time CBC switched to the game. Darrell’s speech was over before 9pm. So you didn’t miss a thing.
If the CBC had not shown the Hockey I would have been part of the angry mob tearing down the CBC building on Bell Rd. brick by brick.
If you can post here, you obviously have Internet service. You could have watched the election coverage on line like I did. It’s called Windows Media Player. Give it a spin, you might like it.
In a climate where CBC is selling assets and cutting jobs – yes, the second last NHL game of the season DOES trump any provincial election, the radio & internet provided adequate coverage.
An NDP gov’t was declared at 7:30 with an NDP majority declared by 7:50. The hockey gamne didn’t start until 9 pm.
OP, seriously, how much redundant coverage do you require?
See, this is why I hate hockey fans. The point is not whether or not I watched the election (I did), or whether or not it ended up being over (it was), but that CBC decided to pre-empt the election coverage with Hockey no matter what the state was. CBC is supposed to serve the public interest, not make a profit. Now, if they had said “We will be covering the game, but might have to delay by a short while in Nova Scotia” I would have been fine with that. To decide sports are more important than politics though, I don’t think that is good for society (when the CBC does it, or when the viewers do it). A little perspective people, that’s all I ask.
It continued on Newsworld, dipshit. They said that right before the hockey game came on. Game freaking 6 of the Stanley Cup. A yeah, we want to fucking watch, particularly since Crosby’s in it.
Good grief. Logic, the CBC made a judgement call, a balance of legitimate NS interests, a cost/benefit analysis – call it what you will, but they gambled on the fact that by 9pm the state of the election would be such that cutting to Hockey, Game 6, Stanley Cup, local boy, would be fine. That turned out to be right. gasp. imagine. I’m sure if at 9pm we were in a crazy contentious heated election they would have had the power to make a last minute change out. They didn’t need to. Election coverage on a secondary channel, the internet and the radio was sufficient at 9. They were able to cover the Dexter win AND the Crosby win. I completely fail to see the point of bitching about what turned out to be the right call.
CBCNW kept election coverage up longer than CTV, actually.
Of course you need cable to get NW, but still.
CBC would’ve had A LOT more bitchers if they had’ve prempted the game. Plus, ad revenues were probably a lot higher for the game rather than the election, and these days it’s all about the $$$.
I don’t have TV at all. Can’t get reception for the basic channels, and I don’t want to buy cable. I got both my election coverage and my hockey coverage on CBC.ca, and was extremely happy with that. Pretty Kitty’s right, ad revenue would be better with the hockey game, and as far I’m concerned, the CBC should take advantage of as much ad revenue as possible, so our tax dollars aren’t totally paying for their existence.
I’m with flying brick. You were given ample warning about this. They covered enough of the election for you to know which party got in. They also told you where to go to get more info on the election. I’m not even into hockey, but I think that more people then just you would have been getting pissed if they didn’t cover hockey. Especially when the majority of important info i.e who won, speeches, had already been covered.
Logic, as you can see by the vast majority of the comments on here, CBC was serving the public interest by showing the game on time. Hockey fan or not, once the results are final and the new Premier gives his speech, what the hell is there worth watching after the fact? Give it a rest, your pretentious diatribe is boring us (just like extended election coverage)
I didn’t even know the election was last night… to be honest, the only reason I knew there was an election at all was from flipping past the articles about it on the way to the crossword. I could care less about politics and I (usually) opt not to vote as I consider myself less-than-informed on “the issues”. Therefore, I leave it up to you, the more informed, to elect the right people – don’t let me down please.
PS – hockey game was great
I’m amazed considering Mother Corp is soooo far left that they use orange paint on their walls.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the
playoffs would be more popular than the
provincial election, anyway.
Especially in Nova Scotia, when you got TWO
Nova Scotians competing for the Cup.
You guys are forgetting about Paul MacLean, who
is a part of Detroit’s coaching staff (who’s already
won the cup).
ok… CBC pays an estimated $100 Million per season to broadcast the NHL in Canada. Do you think they’re going to waste that money???
Also, as Canadians, we’re all electioned out… no body cares anymore because we have TOO MANY!!!!
Logic… if the election was done by 9 and CBC switched over but you wanted to watch more, then all I can ask is “what part of NDP wins” did you miss? Guess what, hockey DOES matter more than who wins the piffle NS calls an election – as evidenced by what everyone is posting here. And oh, if you’re saying cable is the only source of news (for those who can afford it), then you’re an even bigger dipshit than what others here are calling you. Ever hear of changing channels? Or turning on the fucking radio, or finding out by talking to someone on the phone? Wow. Imagine the possiblities, eh? Do us a favour, pluck your head out of your ass.
