Shame on Halifax Regional Police for chasing me down the hall at the IWK emergency with a ticket and summons for my 15 yr old daughter. She was being wheeled to the scaning room to have pictures taken of her injuries. The constable was told to make sure we received the ticket and summons. By the way a skull fracture is life threatening despite what the HRP and News paper reported on May 11.

  1. Never mind I just read the police report…A Summary Offence ticket was issued to the pedestrian for failing to obey a “don’t walk” signal.

  2. The question, OP, is whether your daughter learned her lesson. It’s unfortunate what happened to her, but, if the published newspaper story is accurate (and you aren’t disputing it), your daughter tried to cross when she clearly should not have. She put her own life at riskl; her injuries were, in a sense, self-inflicted. I certainly hope you will make sure she does not do the same sort of thing again.

  3. So HRP gives tickets to pedestrians but not to speeders, reckless drivers, drivers putting their make-up on while driving, talking on cell phones, running red lights, running a red light resulting in blocking the intersection, people parked in no parking/stopping zones (on busy streets). Excellent job Beazley…

  4. What? Almost everyone I know has gotten a speeding ticket at some point, I get parking tickets EVERY time I let a meter run out (even if it’s only a few minutes), and a friend on mine got a ticket for talking on her cell phone while driving last week. It’s more often that pedestrians Don’t get tickets for disobeying laws, isn’t it?

  5. I would think that a ticket is the least of what the girl could have received, for putting herself (either deliberately or through thoughtlessness) in the path of a moving vehicle. She could have received a funeral, instead. She, and her mother, should consider themselves lucky.

  6. im agreeing with Bert on this, complaining about the ticket is a best case scenerio. I understand the emergency of the situation, but that doesnt mean that you just march out into traffic and everyone should stop. Its not like you had flashing lights and a siren.I think the ticket is just a decent reminder that when you are in a life threatening situation, you could put more lives at risk by just marching out into traffic. Now, i didnt read the article, and am just going with what is on here. If there wasnt any traffic for a good stretch in each direction, that cop is being a dick, if not, and your emergency caused an accident (even a fatal one) would the OP be justified of her actions then?

  7. I’m was merely talking based on my observations from driving around the city, those were offenses that could be fined but aren’t. It is just funny that they will chase down a pedestrian but do nothing for red light runners. They tend to fine the easy things such as no left turns at such time (on/off streets that aren’t busy (lots of time to make that left) in the morning is illegal but in the evening when there is a ton of traffic coming it is perfectly legal to make that left; I’ve seen many near collisions happen because the left lane backs up but the right one moves freely, someone tries to make the left and cuts another guy off, who is barreling down at 50 clicks… a pleasant surprise!)

  8. I am also with Bert on this, and I certianly don’t aggree that the mother should be bitching at the HRMP about the ticket…she should be pissed at her daughter for the ticket and the damages they will eventually be expected to pay to the car owner. How do you think they feel right now? It wasn’t the drivers fault in any way but now they have to live with the images and feelings from that moment, not to mention you will probably refuse to pay for the damage to the car. Your kid didn’t look both ways or heed the Don’t Walk sign and gets smashed as common sense would tell you would happen eventually, and you have the gall to bitch out a cop just doing his job…way to go idiot. Maybe you should bitch at yourself for not infusing in your child sense enough not to step out onto the street without looking, how about we start a bitch about the moron mother that didn’t teach her kid common sense practices.

  9. How do you know she didn’t look? where you there? I am not disputing the ticket if in fact she did cross whe she wasn’t suppoed to. I am disputing the need to chase a mother who is following her daughter’s trauma team. The ticket could have waited. the next day at 7:15 am in ICU the officer came to tell my daughter she had a ticket. ( I feel bad for her because she’s following orders). Since then my child has obsessed about the crossing trying to remember. Obviously, after a fractured skull she can’t remember. She says, “Mum, I know it’s busy there I wouldn’t cross, that would be crazy”. She has had me drive her to the site and got so angry because she can’t figure it out. Why did the driver not see her on a straight stretch of road? Was she on her cell phone? My daughter was taught the rules of the road. Maybe she thought she had the green. Kids make mistakes. Should I ground her now so she “never does it again”. Please people, if it was your child you’d feel a tad different I’m sure. Thanks for calling me an idiot. I was complaining about the manner in which the ticket was given. If my daughter did something wrong then ticket her. Just don’t stop me from attendning her in the emergency department.

  10. When I say the next day, that includes giving me the ticket in the emergency department, then coming in to tell my daughter the following morning.

  11. It takes a certain kind of person to want to be a cop… to want to have authority over others and flex it. I’m all for the OP, Rhonda, for this one. The cops could’ve given her a warning instead considering the consequences mother and daughter will have to live with. AS IF the ticket is going to make one iota of difference to anybody’s behavior. Cops should take a fucking reality check from time to time.

  12. Just out of curiosity Kay, have you ever known a police officer? I’m not going to pretend to be an authority on what makes police officers tick, but my dad was a policeman. He certainly didn’t want to “flex authority” over anyone. He wanted to make his community a better place to live. It was that simple.
