Grocery store managers who throw their going-bad produce in big bins at big discount hoping that suckers who buy it [me] will not bother to take it back for a refund [not me]. —Yes I Compost, But Not Just-Bought Produce!

They don’t just put produce on sale because they’re bored…
You may not like it, but you don’t have to buy it. There are people starving around the world that would love that 4 day old banana.
You have lost your grip on our world. Not everyone can buy the perfect apple everyday.
Open your eyes. Don’t waste food.
Caveat Emptor. What? are you going to sue the people who put an old davenport by the side of the road because you took it home and got bedbugs.
It’s discounted for a reason. Better to sell it at a lower price than to throw it out. You may not want it but someone else might.
So that’s who buys the reject food. I thought they donated it to OverEaters Anon.
Overripe fruit. Mmmm. They are great in smoothies.
At least there’s a discount bin. I know a ‘So-be-it’ store that regularly sells their rotten produce for full price. Wanting to buy a cabbage last week to make slaw and the only ones there had severely blackened outer leaves. Uh, if that was in my refridgerator it would be headed for the composter toute suite and they expect people to pay full price for this? It’s garbage! The bastards record record-breaking profits every year, but do they have to treat their customers like less than beasts, grateful for whatever slop we are offered! It’s bad enough they gouge us to death, but do they have to insult our proletariat selves in the process!
Don’t buy produce from the un-refrigerated discount bin or shelf next time if you are interested in fresh produce.
I too am totally appalled at grocery stores lately!! Seriouslly!! Everything is so stupid expensive.Grocery store owners should not be allowed to make a profit off of a necessity during a time of apparent recession. Some people can only afford sale items these days and they shouldn’t make it frigging compost. Let them eat it.
yet another excuse not to eat your fruits and veggies! 🙂
stick with steak, tuna, and chicken. you’ll know what you’re gettin there.
mmmm… and mercury for free!
happy kombacha… you just fall off a dumb truck or something?
“Grocery store owners should not be allowed to make a profit off of a necessity during a time of apparent recession.”
that’s the dumbest shit I’ve ever read on here, and I’ve read some dumb shit. Grocery store ‘owners’ aren’t in business to provide services for free, they’re in it to make a profit, dumbass. No profit = no grocery stores. No grocery stores = grow your own fucking food you dumb twat.
Also: OP — clearance veggies and fruit are generally meant for immediate consumption. You can see clearly what you’re getting and if it’s a fruit in a skin, well, it’s your own damn fault for getting shitty produce because you cheaped out.
Alsox2: my theory on steak and chicken and tuna:
steak: only top sirloin or above. A nice brisket is always delicious too (not steak, but dead cow nonetheless)
chicken: skinless, boneless chicken breasts or wings only. Chicken thighs are NASTY. So are chicken legs. Though, I suppose I’d be into chicken ribs too. But only if they’re fried a la the dirty bird
tuna: white only. Light tuna is vomit-inducing.
pretteh – don’t forget the no farmers.
The produce pixie doesn’t crap that stuff out for a saucer of milk, kombacha. The only reason you’re not paying more right now is because the grocery stores have been competing for customers for years. Cutting their PROFITS to stay competitive ended up insulating people from the full brunt of the recession and food shortages the rest of the world has been fucked by.
There’s *making a profit* and then there’s *Gouging*. We live in the culture of greed. Which one do you think the grocery giants are choosing? The elderly, the disabled, students, and the unemployed or minimum wage earner have fewer choices in the name of maximizing CEO paycheques and shareholder dividends. Corporations are non-entities, only concerned with profits with no concept of the morality that a civil society depends upon. What is wrong with this picture?
I’m not saying it’s a great system, OC, but it makes food readily available for the majority of western society.
Most of us have no means of producing our own food — I have nowhere to put a dairy cow or house some chickens and I’m sure what can be grown on my patio won’t feed a family of three.
We have these systems for a reason and I’d much rather that than starvation.
And why are we forgetting about food banks? They give access to food for those who need it.
I think those among us bitching about grocery retailers should visit some underdeveloped countries around the world where food shortages affect everyone and you can’t just go around the corner to your local grocer to pick up a few things for dinner, even if you had the means to do so.
We’re EXTREMELY lucky to have the access to food that we do here, and part of that easy access is the profit model.
Or you know, we could revert into a soviet-style society where profits are stripped away and people have to line up for hours to get a simple loaf of bread…. There’s always that! 😉
Yes it’s annoying but that’s why you simply avoid most produce on massive discount. If stupor store and slowbeys are selling vegetables for half price you can bet something is defective or old. I’ve never had a complaint about clete’s bootique, bit more expensive sometimes but worth it.
Roast ’em and freeze ’em for later consumption on pizzas, in pastas. BBQ ’em. The possibilities are endless!
IIRC grocery stores make a whopping 1-3% profit. Sounds like gouging to me (sarcasm).
davenport… 🙂
I dunno, I really don’t find food prices all that terrible… but I guess I don’t have any debt or children I can’t afford. Just a fat kitteh 🙂
i should clarify: it was watermelon and i tried to eat it as soon as i got home but it was already fermenting. couldn’t tell it was bad without cutting it open.
did it have seeds? j/k *chesterfield*
