We recently lost our beloved dog to old age. We’re exploring all available options to find the “right” dog for us.

WTF is with people who SAY they want a “good home” for their dog, but want to sell it for $500?

If you gave a rat’s ass about a “good home” you’d be willing to give it away. Or return it to the breeder for a partial refund. Or ask for money for the accoutrements and not the pet. Or request that the “good home” reimburse you for the vet bills to date.

And don’t get me started on the “I got this puppy 2 weeks ago and he doesn’t like my cat”. —We’ll pay for the “right” dog, just makes me sick.

  1. The animal shelters do the same thing. They sell cats for 100 even upward of 200 dollars, but if they aren’t “adopted” or I should say – sold in 72 hours, they’re euthanized out back. Animals are big bidnez, no matter if you hide it from the public by calling yourself a charity. Look in the free section of kijiji. Although I once got a cat off kijiji and it shat on da floor errr’ry damn day.

  2. Why should they be free? It costs money to have any pet to be checked out by a vet, have its shots, and to be neutered.

  3. I agree wholeheartedly.
Reimbursement for vet bills or breeder fees, etc. is one thing, but some of these Kijidiots are selling off non-purebred pets for upwards of $350.
Shelters are cheaper, and they run on donations. Try that, OB?

  4. Yup, burns my ass when I see people who took on a commitment like pet ownership and, when it becomes inconvenient, the pet gets sold off so the owner doesn’t lose their precious money. They should be concerned about not being able to provide for or losing their pet, not their fucking money. Humans are disgusting pieces of shit!

  5. never, ever give away a living creature for ‘free’ to a stranger. ever.
the puppybrokers, breeders, the sadists, the dog fight organizers and the cretins who supply research labs are first in line when one of those ads appears.

so even if one is a creep who is trying to dump their pet (aka ‘re-home’ like its a fucking kind thing to do) it should never be for free.

and how would any ordinary person know you are good pet owners and worthy of a ‘free’ dog? cretins send their girlfriends in with their kids to appear like a loving family. have you seen the picture of the little grey pittie girl who was given away for ‘free’ to a ‘loving family’ only to end up with her mouth and paws duct taped and thrown into a fight ring as a warm up for the fighters?

if you are doing business with someone who is advertising a dog on kij or craigs then you are helping them in their business. they are making money off their dog’s back. each person who pays them 400$ just extends the misery of their poor bitch who will be forced to breed again to make them more money. these people look like kindly grandmas sometimes, but they are NOT, they are pimps. no more, and actually even less, because at least sometimes the girls in a human pimp’s stable are volunteers. fucked up yes, but walked in on their own. a dog has no choice.

if you buy a dog from a store you are putting money in the pockets of truly loathsome creatures who breed dogs in the most appalling conditions. the amish do more than make furniture. they also have the largest and most disgusting puppy mills in north America, and because they believe god gave them dominion over dumb beasts, they see nothing wrong with treating them as product.

if you have approached a rescue or shelter and got offended by the rigorous vetting they do, consider it an indication of love. they will ask your neighbours, your boss, your vet about you. they will do home visits. they will ask for money – it doesn’t begin to cover the cost of what they do. and you will have to sign a contract agreeing to return the dog/cat if your situation changes. you agree to return the pet to them, and not ‘re-home’ thru ad ad.

don’t enable breeders. don’t enable flippers. don’t enable puppy brokers. don’t enable puppy mills. put them out of business by refusing to buy. ADOPT. and anyone who deliberately breeds dogs or cats should be shunned and boycotted.

  6. I hate people more than my usual today. goodbye buddy, you’ve been released from your years of misery.
    fuck people. fuck them .

  7. Hang in there, OP, you’ll find a good pooch. Me and the wife went through the same business this year. We were totally unwilling to use a pet store, although it can break your heart to see how animals are kept in a store.

And despite what another poster said, the amount of vetting through shelters can be offensive…I particularly did not like the manners of many SPCA “foster parents”. I don’t mind some scrutiny, but these people take it overboard.

We eventually went through Kijiji, and rescued (for want of a better word) a 6 year old labeagle that no longer conformed to the needs of a young couple with two new babies and limited time and space. Credit to them for recognizing that they couldn’t adequately take care of the dog. We couldn’t be happier with the pooch, and she’s very happy too – now she’s got sprawling fields and woodlands to investigate.

  8. realist, good to hear you wouldn’t use a pet store, they get those sweet puppies from puppy mills, if no one buys, they will stop selling and the mills will have to turn to meth to make their money. soulless bastards. if someone goes into a pet store and pays 1200$ because they can’t stand to see that puppy behind the glass, they have just perpetuated the misery of thousands of dogs to come. it must stop.

anyway. the couple getting rid of their beagle got lucky with you. because as offensive as you may find it to be treated with suspicion when you feel you are a great pet owner, how does that dog’s current owner KNOW you are a good person and not someone conning them to get a dog to use as bait, to breed ( the ads that tout ‘unfixed’ as a bonus make me puke) to use as a fuck toy or to hang from a tree and stab with bbq forks? they don’t. they can’t. unless they go to the ‘overboard’ lengths that the spca & rescue people do. that shit happens. people in shelters and rescue have seen just about every hideous thing that can be done to an animal. like people who work in child rescue. so if they poke and prod at your self esteem a bit its because they are handing over a living creature that will be utterly dependant on your good nature. and despite all the questioning, the home visits, the interviews with your neighbours, vet and employer, sometime a rat bastard gets past the radar and gets that precious little pup, kicks him to death and you have to hold him as he dies. and then you hate yourself because you didn’t ask enough questions, you didn’t ‘see’ into that bastards soul. he fooled you, and because of that, a sweet pup had to live in fear and die in pain.
so for gods sake understand the intrusive questions.

  9. If you cant afford to pay a fee for a pet how are you going to afford to take care of them?

Look for private non-profit rescues they generally have lower fees or only require a donation towards their rescue efforts in order to adopt an animal.

Do I agree with the outrageous amounts some people charge for pets no, but giving pets away for free can lead to dangerous situations for the animal.

Just Google “puppy doe” and you can see what giving animals away for free can lead to.
