To the Self-Centred Jerks Marching Band that marched down Cornwallis Street 9pm on Saturday Night:

What the hell are you people thinking? Marching down a residential street waking and terrifying small children who are trying to sleep? I am sure you think you are very clever, and you appeared to be having a great time. Too bad you have no common sense and a complete lack of concern for anyone but yourselves.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe downtown in a non-residential area might be a better place to have your little parade? It’s not bad enough we have to endure noise pollution from concerts on the commons, now you feel the need to pester us too. You are selfish, inconsiderate and bad neighbours. Jerks.—Disgusted

  1. Did you call the cops? Probably not. If so they would have done one of two things, inform you they had permission or two, dispatch a unit or two to break it up.

  2. they did have permits….and it was really fun…next time bring your kids to join in on the fun!

  3. 9 PM. on a non-school night; frightened children; noise pollution? AHH YEAH Methinks you need a little chat with someone maybe on a couch in a darkened office 😉

  4. I was in New Orleans a couple years ago & I seen one of those funeral processions with the guy’s playing horns, trumpets etc.walking right up the centre of the Street. IT was in the late afternoon & was pretty cool send off IMO.
I wonder if a permits required?

I’m with the others here who believe children would probably have been really interested in seeing what was going on. Which makes you an assh@!# for not letting them see the parade… Maybe infants might have been disturbed, but seeing as they disturb anyone at any time they feel like it…chances are they’ll suffer no lasting harm .

  5. Are these the same counter-culture doorknobs that I saw doing their ‘thing’ at the median of duke(?) and North Park?

  6. Thanks gop, now all I can think of is the Deathmobile ruining the marching band parade.

Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life son.

  7. i love that movie…i think it was you: pdg who used the term double secret probation

  8. Poor OP, the approaching parade season must be a living hell with children who are “terrified” of marching bands, how do you even cope? With such delicate sensibilities, I might suggest you and your little family move out of such a busy downtown neighborhood, perhaps somewhere quieter and more isolated, where you can shield yourselves from the horrors of people having fun. Seriously though, this bitch is unbelievably pathetic. If two minutes worth of music from a passing marching band is the worst thing you hear on a Saturday night in the North End, consider yourself lucky.

  9. What a frigging killjoy.
Bring the kids out. A little exposure to *actual musicians having fun* will be a good thing for them.
Maybe inspire the little tykes to begin a lifelong love affair with music.
    Or a musician.

  10. Let the counter bitches continue! We have a right to have fun and express ourselves peacefully in the street! Stick your head out the window next time, catch a few of those 100 smiling faces and your mood will surely lift.
Yes, we are those counter culture doorknobs playing music at North park and cogswell. Heaven forbid, honnest fun, music, and art be made in public space! Long live community Creativity!

  11. I am so sorry that you weren’t able to enjoy and appreciate the magic, and community spirit that made that march possible. Really, I feel badly for you. You know, there were parents there with their children, and elderly people, and teenagers, and twenty and thirty-somethings, and everyone was having a fabulous time. We got so many thank-yous and huge smiles and laughter from other people who came out of their house to enjoy the show, and I believe you might have been the only stick in the mud in the whole neighbourhood.
But in true marching band spirit, may fun and music come your way yet. Heck, why don’t you join us next time and see how much fun it really is. I bet your kids would have a blast!

  12. Like many of the other counter bitches, I too feel bad that you missed out on all the fun. The whole point of the marching band was to inspire creativity and bring the North End community together. Everyone in the band and all those who either joined in on the fun or watched from there balconies and porches had smiles that lit up the streets of Halifax. What an amazing event and my hat goes off to all those who spent countless hours making this performance possible.

So, before you go complaining about “all the noise” next time, why don’t you think of all the people, both onlookers and participants, who benefited from this spontaneous expression of creativity. Perhaps next time you and your children could join in on the fun instead of bitching about the 10 minute inconvenience you endured.

  13. I used to live on cornwallis, and was also in the band. Like you said it was 9:00 and we can make all the noise we want till 11:00. cornwallies is aloud street anyway with tragic and cops all the time, not to mention all the bands that live and jam, on that street. years ago gotagin was like spring garden. You ;ive DOWN TOWN if you want quit a soon as the sun goes down move to the serbs with all the other tight asses.
And as for shelfish we brought joy to at least 200 on lookers and joiners in on our rough around the north end.

  14. I’m sad you were upset enough to write a bitch about it. I thought it was all pretty fun and kid friendly.
Sorry to have to piss some people off to let other have a really good time. It seems impossible to have everybody win.

  15. this bitch is wack. the parade was AH-mazing, with giant beautiful puppets and full band music- a totally kid friendly and inspiring celebration! so what the kids wake up! they will get back to sleep-they are kids! next time come join the fun. live a little.

  16. I don’t know about frightening the children, but I can see some of the OP’s point. I used to get upset when I was trying to put my daughter to sleep for the night and noisy motorcycles would drive by outside the window and stir her from her almost-sleep. 9PM is a little late for such a thing. Perhaps warning should have been given in the first place or as OP suggested, the parade take place somewhere else.

  17. We sat on our balcony on Creighton and enjoyed the music. Our four-year-old daughter slept through the whole thing.

Hey, Original Poster? I think Lower Sackville is calling you back to the ‘burbs.

  18. @Jonnoman:

“I used to get upset when I was trying to put my daughter to sleep for the night and noisy motorcycles would drive by outside the window and stir her from her almost-sleep.”

I think music is a little different than un-mufflered motorcycles.

“9PM is a little late for such a thing.”

    Not according to HRM by-laws.

“Perhaps warning should have been given in the first place”

There were posters all over the neighbourhood. I must’ve passed two dozen of them while on an afternoon stroll with my daughter.

“the parade take place somewhere else.”

Like someplace where nobody lives? An industrial park, perhaps? Get real…

  19. The only point I was trying to make was that I appreciate the bitcher’s bitch from the perspective of a parent that had some issues trying to get my child to sleep. There was nothing that would piss me off more than her having nodded off then some unforeseen/unnecessary noise startle her and wake her up. Seems a little weird to have a loud parade through a residential area after all normal households have already settled down… why couldn’t it have been done earlier? Could have drawn more of a crowd and a much more welcoming one at that.

  20. All the posters I saw on Gottingen, Creighton, Maynard and Cornwallis said 8:00pm. I first heard the parade at about 8:20pm. I didn’t hear a thing after nine o’clock.

That sounds to me like they were being quite respectful of the neighbourhood’s other denizens.

  21. But really, even 8pm is a bit late for a parade don’t you think? I’m all for parades but I have to wonder why so late? Wouldn’t there have been more people entertained if the event was held in the afternoon?
