It’s reasonable to block off the sidewalk directly in front of the resturaunts, but the one on the other side of the road too? Give me a fucking break!!! I’m not going to risk my neck, inching my way over the icy park, because you dumb fucks think both sidewalks should be closed off. I asked a (particuIarly unattractive) guard why they had the opposing sidewalk closed, and she said it was in case the buildings fall over. I respectfully dissagree. You are a bunch of idiots! Those buidings are going nowhere, and neither am I if you see me waltzing through your silly barriers. So next time, don’t sit there in your warm truck, honking the horn acting like a bitch! If you have something to say, get out of your truck, and we’ll see if you can even protect yourself!

Oftentimes it seems common safety standards, especially in North America, are a bit over the top. Like if there’s a 0.001% chance of something happening, there needs to be all kinds of measures and red tape in place which inconveniences 99.9% of the population to minimize this “risk.” You can thank insurance companies and lawyers, I guess.
Imagine the outrage and uproar, though, if the 0.001% chance of those buildings collapsing did happen, and they didn’t have the other side of the street blocked off, and there happened to be A CHILD (ohh God, not A CHILD! Think of the children!) who was hit by a rogue brick and killed. I can imagine there would be allll kinds of Bitches posted saying that the Fire Department was negligent and should have done more to keep the public safe, etc. Same with when 9/11 happened – of course nobody “did enough” to prevent it and there were all the “warning signs” of this about to happen which were “ignored,” but who doesn’t complain about all the delays and oftentimes ridiculous security measures in place at airports nowadays?

Take it this way . I build buildings . I also previously and sometimes take them down . Fire Department . Structure Engineers etc… All follow code concerning ANY compromised structure .
Yes – you Can thanks the Insurance Industry. We all have have to follow code . Insurance Companies have alot to say what goes into code . They don’t want some building owner , contractor etc – having something fall on someone from they’re site and having to pay for someone that got smoked but falling debris .
WHICH IS WHY there is a barrier and that is why you need to go around . Take it from someone that works in the construction industry. And to anyone – go around – theres a reason that barrier is there and for the people that think they’re self importance superceeds your safety . I’ll say this to the OP also .If thats a compromised structure – you best be walking on the other side . A falling brick or wall gets all the tough guys !!! A burned building especially ( If thats what it is ) has had its physics changed and weakened .
Think of it this way – If a 30 foot brick wall falls – you have a good minimum 100 foot of collateral damage. Still want to play chicken ? Even if the security guard was a dick – doesn’t matter . He’s still a dick – but was told what to do for good reason . Doesn’t change nothing . Stupid bitch in the first place .

Should’ve had the guard charged with assault. That would’ve been a wakeup call to him. I encounter guards and bouncers that think they are the king of the world, and it’s frustrating because it makes me look bad.

if you’re taking the wall as vertical height of 20 feet and counting 100 feet as the distance from where the base of the wall stood, I call bullshit.
there’s no way the top bricks of the wall, once crashing to the ground, are going to further travel 70 feet out. absofuckinglutely no way.
you’d be lucky to see any @ 50 feet… though perhaps the far sidewalk was 50 feet or so from the front base, in which this makes it a danger zone…

ZZZ call it what you want – think of a brink wall that hits the ground – do you think the bricks all fall in that 30 foot zone nice and easy ? No . And if it hits structure somewhere on the way over – that wall will bust into pieces and scatter around . .
ZZZ another thing with debris that falls – your math aside . If a brick – glass etc breaks when it hits – does your math allow for pieces ricocheting ? I thought not . Ive broke down many a building and have seen how far things can fly when hit and or hit off other objects . My point is – that Is what happens – and if you decide to ignore barriers or cordened off things at demolition and construction sites . You risk getting injured , thats that . Look like a really smart one with a head injury standing in the danger zone trying to calculate that falling wall .
on relatively flat land, ie. a sidewalk and road cordoned off with no hazards (or even with some plastic pilons etc… ) it’s not going 100 feet. I’ll look at the math a bit more but I still can’t see it.
I know it won’t stop dead when hitting the ground but it’s not going to hit at 30 feet from the base and spring a further 70 feet. it’s just not.
again, I’d say 50 would be a better estimate though it is just that… my best guess.
Although I will agree it’s not exact ZZZ . But for safety reasons and to certain insurance clauses and industry code – maximum allowable is used . I’m only stating what I know from demolishing building and seeing thing ( debris) scatter a little more then we might have thought . Usually its because something broke into pieces, hit another part of structure on the way down – and changed trajectory . Even so….. That extra area cordonned off is for public safety . I myself have no idea why people would be pissed because they have to go around something that has the risk of injuring or killing them .
We have had people on a few fire building sites – actually try to enter it to ” claim their belongings” – when there is missing floors – compromised structure all over , things still falling . They all went past the tape – all past the barriers and risked a dangerous site from the fire itself and us removing anything that will fall by making it fall . I don’t agree with a security guard being a prick thou – thats another thing – he’s just a nimrod that thinks he’s god for 8 bucks an hour .
The reason he is there thou – is to keep people out of that place – out of that area for reasons that are valid . AS for him being a dick – likely right . Yea it can seem like overkill having a barrier so far away from the actual danger . But again , that inconvienience is just to make sure nothing takes you out if something goes wrong . Cranes fall – things fall – malfunctioning machine can fail – alot can happen .

Oh PS ZZZ this was atempted by member of a 110 year old tennis/squash club trying to get to they’re lockers and grab their rackets and junk out . This is a 110 year old stone wood frame three floor building that was on fire all night with hardly any structural support . Fire depatment cut most the structure out the floors to get to the fire . The beer fridges below and the row of lockers they wanted to get at was mostly all that was holding up most the floor above .
Eventually I had to get one of my crew to stand security on the door and kick people out of the area .
