Ok, so I totally understand and respect the meaning of this weeks celebration in Africville/Seaview Park.
What I don’t get is that when I brought my dog there this morning there are still people camping, cars driving over the grass areas and TONS of garbage everywhere. It’s totally distusging.
I pick up after my dog and so do the scores of people that visit everyday.
Yet the humans there this weekend left a disgraceful garbage pile behind.

You should forward your complaint to the event organizers and the city. Someone needs to be held responsible for the mess.
Well that area was a dump in the past. Perhaps it was just done as a nostalgia type thing.
Find another park. There are plenty of other places for your dog to take a crap other than a historic site.
Thumbs up for arcane25.
Are you kidding? That was one of the dumbest comments I ever read. A regular user of the park, who respects the park, should find another one because some other people decide to camp out and make a mess and destroy the place?
Not was it only a dumb comment, but it got a thumbs up from the beezneez. Maybe those 2 asshats were there this weekend.
What the hell, More? Nice!!!! And who’d have thought you were so old you actually remember what Africville looked like?!
To the OP: Have you ever been to a party anywhere public where there WASN’T a huge mess left behind afterwards? Unfortunately when you get a large group of humans together in one place, be it a sports stadium, an outdoor rock concert, a downtown New years celebration, only filth and debris are left behind. There’s nothing unique, or suggestive to the type of people who celebrated at Seaview.
I think the OP was commenting about the human feces, or food waste left everywhere. Or how about fire pits in the middle of the grass areas..
Yes, human feces and HRM not cleaning it up.
I attended Seaview tonight and was disgusted…..garbage blowing everywhere and beer bottle caps and broken beer bottles everywhere. My dog and I love the park and respect it and it’s history. I am ashamed of the people who did this. Now not everyone is responsible, but come on, if you are taking part in a celebration and remembrance of a piece of land that was a vibrant community why would you disrespect it and others who use it and appreciate its beauty.
If it meant that much to you I would think you would make sure it was clean and respected like others would expect us to when with our dogs.
Apparently the acurate re-enactment of the previous land use prohibited portapotties and dumpsters 🙂
On a serious note tho, the folks should be leaving the park in the same condition it was in when handed over for the celebration. Can you imagine the uproar if the city left it covered in garbage and dog feces and told the group to “enjoy”. Thats basically what that group has now told the rest of HRM residents who use that park.
Oh, for fuck’s sake, you stroll with your mutt the morning after – holy shit on a shingle, give the goddamn city crews time after a long weekend, OP. I’m sure it’ll be cleared by the weekend. What a fucking lame bitch.
Can everyone stop being so rasis! lol
Just in case anyone thought otherwise, I’m not condoning the mess left behind- just explaining that there are many of us who do take our messes away when leaving an event, like I’m sure there were many at Seaview park, Barb. Unfortunately, there always seems to be a large outnumbering by lazy slobs. Take a look at the Pizza corner at the end of each night, before the morning cleanup begins. I wonder how the Commons looked after the Paul McCartney concert ended- filthy I’m sure.
It’s like TTFN says, give the city crews a frigging chance!
The concert on the hill & the concerts on the commons were cleaned up by hired contractor, & their employees.
While we removed the stage & sound towers Monday, the fence guy’s & the cleaning guy’s were removing the garbage & barriers. If it had been left to the city…we’d still be waiting, & it would get done……………………eventually.
Whoever is responsible for taking over the Seaview park. Someone has a permit to hold that event, they IMO should be responsible for seeing the mess is dealt with in a safe ,quick & orderly fashion. If someone did that to the commons or the hill , the very vocal & pissed off residents wouldn’t be long in letting everyone know, what a terrible travisty had occured.
PS. I’m old enough to not only remember that the bridge approaches on the Halifax side run over the old dump site, I remember the massive filling of Bedford Basin that occured to put in the container pier. (Anyone else old enough to remember the old Halifax Transfer Station ,the building is still there, & harbor water from the basin came right up to one side of the building before all of the fill was dumped over the years. Creating that huge undeveloped area ) Seaview park is another creation of the basin being filled in. I was a young boy in school when they bulldozed the church in Africville. While I understand why those who lived there & the decendants wish to commemorate the memory of the area. A quick clean up isn’t too much to ask, after all it is expected everywhere else !
But Scooby Doo, if I took your explanation re. giving the Hfx staff time to get clean it up and applied it to eating at a fast food restaurant I’d be entitled to drop my food and waste everywhere other than the garbage can or toilet. The staff will get to it eventually, but is it fair to the other customers?
There were garbage cans there and I hope portapotties were available for attendees, they decided to be lazy and through their garbage and take a shit whereever they wanted. Irresponsable is a fair description.
Ooops, my last comment was for TTFN not Scooby Doo.
