Okay, so I’m in school at the moment and all I have to say is that I HATE school computers. I’m sick of every fucking site being blocked and I hate using internet explorer. I always have to convert my assignments into a less modern version of microsoft word or else the computers can’t open them. I fucking hate it! —Want a laptop

Most people don’t have Office ’07 or ’10, besides, and all the new format gives you is slightly better compression, and you can save all your documents as a .doc file directly in Office, so you don’t actually have to convert anything.
Even of your school let you use Firefox, they’d still be able to lock down websites, and lock all the settings, so it would be like using IE, so really, there’s no difference.
If people save their documents as .rtf (rich text format) there are no version or platform problems. I feel for you OP, as I understand it the school system’s filtering is almost punishing.
