A bitch had been posted regarding the spiritual charlatan that was coming to town. I didn’t have to say any names, and from the comments it is obvious he is fooling no one. Yet, the post disappeared after being up and commented on. So is part of having the so called truth, mean you get flunkies that browse local media. And anything that isn’t kissing your proverbial ass has to be “dealt with”? Real humility, and confidence in your bull shit. And shame on the Coast for removing the post. I agree with you about the snake-oil peddlar, but, if you believe that this august magazine is worthy of any more respect than any other media organ with an axe to grind, you really have no right to look down on the Choprolites. It’s my understanding that he was ,among other things, preaching an enviro-message, hence the cover story. And that’s the most fun thing about watching enviro-correctness become the new secular fundamentalism. Watching the schisms develop. Let the Greenhad begin.

I have lost all respect for the coast as well, OB. Because of their “journalism” award nomination, they have turned into just another censorship rag, where everything considered “off topic” will now be erased. I have been a long time commenter/reader of this paper. That ends today!!!!! You want to “clean up” your paper for this nomination, you can count on one thing for sure…me not giving you the “advertisement hits” your online paper needs to survive.

what’s happening here is pretty self-explanatory.
The coast can’t figure out how to delete comments or they have a shitty CMS that won’t allow them to delete comments. None of them are coders or even remotely comfortable with SQL server so they can’t go in and manually remove the comments that annoy the rest of us. Which lately has been most of them.
The coast? If you want, I can do that for you. It’s pretty brainless work, no offense.
The other side of this is that there are a pack of idiots who have succumbed to mob mentality and are arguing about nothing to people who may or may not even exist and it’s gotten out of hand and stupid. These people aren’t being censored for being too hardcore. they’re being censored because they’re turning this comment board into an episode of pretentious jerry springer. IT’S ANNOYING.

I can’t see how the denegration of comments on a “bitch” board constitutes deletion of the original post, let alone banning commentors.
Certainly, some comments are “annoying” to the readers (as are some of the “bitches”). At times, I am both offended and offensive.
We live in a world where we experience conflict as a result of others actions, words, etc. What we enjoy is the ability to (mostly) say & do what we want without fear of reprisal, ie: “bitching” and commenting on such bitching.
When people, organizations and systems step in to “remedy” a situation they don’t like, they are simply overriding the basic human right to free speech.
The Coast has taken a stand. They released the names of bitchers once under the guise of doing what was “right”; to Hell with free speech – a strong value shared by the media.
To remark that the bitch regarding the spiritual chalatan(it and presumably others) will be open only to “…useful and intelligent commentary and criticism” is a reflection of the fact that The Coast does NOT share the value of free speech. For that reason, and that reason alone, The Coast should be ashamed and apologize.
And please remove the BOLDING on the text – it’s fucking annoying.
I’m only kidding, just making a point is all. I find it extremely shitty that the mod didn’t come in and MODERATE before everyone gets banned. Posts disappear, posters disappear, entire bitches disappear, without so much as a “how do you do” from someone who is supposed to be in control. So what, some people got in an argument. That shit happens every day. Does anyone watch the “house of commons” debates? This shit was pretty tame compared to that.
If you want to ban someone for breaking rule number 1, no names or personal info, fine. I have no problem with that. What I do have a problem with is the childishness with which the entire situation was handled. The mod knew who wrote the “STUPID” bitch and knew what the outcome of posting the bitch would be, but posted it anyway to stir the pot. When the pot got overstirred, everyone who challenged her authority or spoke out against her was banned. That, I have a problem with.
Still, there are relatively harmless posts disappearing, and it sucks that at any moment, without warning, you can be banned for whatever reason. So, where is the line we aren’t allowed to cross? What constitutes a difference of opinion instead of a troll? Do we all have to pretend we like each other?
I’ll stick it out a little longer because I enjoy this site and find it entertaining, and I may even summon the courage to go to a summit sometime but, if I’m banned for this post…I won’t be back. Seeing as this bitch is inviting criticism, I hope this isn’t over the everchanging, imaginary line.

Great point ShittyD! Why the “Stupid” bitch ever saw the light of day in retrospect is hard to understand. This is not a shot at it’s author so much as the fact that it was bound to bring out the worst in the bitchers. Is that the Mod’s fault? In a perfect world no but this site is far from perfect and we like it that way.

I know when mods past had an issue with a poster, they would email them and let them know what’s up. When biscuit was originally banned, Bird emailed him to explain the situation and they exchanged a few emails back and forth.
If I had’ve been emailed and told to fuck off with the bullshit, I would’ve complied. After that THEN ban posters. That’s what my beef was and that’s why I got so pissed off when I was banned like TTFN and Paulio — none of us were emailed to ask to fuck off. I’ve always gotten emails from other boards if I wrote something against the rules before being banned (and I’ve never BEEN banned from a site before because I understood that rules were in place for a reason). Thing is, we’ve been allowed to have at it for so long, that enforcement of rules kind of came out of the blue. When TTFN and I moderated this board (yup, that’s right) a while back while the mod was on vacation, we were basically told that anything goes except for the word “c-unt.” And when we went so long without any rules…
Unfortunately, this current mod is a little sensitive to criticism and let things go too far on the board (she has to take some responsibility here for not acting sooner). Perhaps we can chalk this up to her being new on the job, I don’t know, but I feel on edge posting here sometimes because I feel like if I write something she doesn’t like I’ll get banned.

Looks like Ivan got 20 years corrective labor without the right to communication (Sovietspeak for deadski) which is a bit surprising because, while he never made any secret of his contempt for the Coasts op-ed biases, he was generally pretty supportive of the mods. He never bitched when his comments were removed for crossing a line. In fact, he probably asked for more of his own comments to be deleted than he ever complained about anyone else. I suspect that he was banned for being a smartass about the Mod’s way of dealing with recent events, which, if true, puts him in very good company.
