Good news people! It’s that time of year when our neighbourhood coffee shop rrrrrolls out their uber-popular promotion whereby the person who can waste the most disposable cups might have a chance to win a donut!
As always happens this time of year, when I stopped by my local establishment with my travel mug—as I do every single morning—for my AM caffeine, I was handed an empty cup just for rolling purposes. No! I’m sorry, but this promotion has run its course. Why are they allowed to get away with advertising that frankly encourages people to waste as many cups as possible, and discourages people like me from using a reusable travel mug? Idiotic. —Not a flagrant waster

take the cups, make something, give them back…re-gifting or a tv guide
At least you get a cup for a chance to win something. At the Arch store, their policy is to not fill reusable mugs (for health reasons they say). They will give you your coffee in whatever size cup you ordered and you have the pleasure of pouring it in your mug (what’s the point them, right?).
Would make more sense to print up some small scratchies for people who carry their own mugs rather than give them an fucking empty cup. Thankfully, I still have enough taste to know that I’d rather drink the bung water at the bottom of my composter than let my lips touch that vile swill.
And if they didn’t give away the free empty cups, people would bitch that they were being unfairly excluded from the contest.
Damed if the do….
I actually emailed them about making small roll up cards or scratch cards or something and they responded by saying it would actually be MORE of a waste because they would print the same number of cups anyway… how that makes sense, I am not sure. If they printed cups based on non-Roll-up consumption it would account for the people who use reusable mugs and wouldn’t cause there to be more waste.
However, this is coming from a company who won’t make their cups environmentally friendly and insist on double-cupping rather than providing sleeves for extremely hot beverages…
Donut? Dude, my neighbour won the damn car the second day in on one of these things. The cups are recyclable, not that the HRM actually takes them, like so much other stuff. I just pack them up and put them in the in-store recycling bin.
My dad won a BBQ about 8 years ago. That was pretty exciting… at the time. But ya, most people have a hard time getting a coffee. My bro was 0-14 for last year before he got something.
Another year….and no chance for a win for me.
But on the up side…I don’t have to drink that swill either ~:)
I’m 0-2….but I drink tea. I really want the TV or the car. 🙂
I found two random empty XL cups in the kitchen this morning…rolled it up — nadda. It’s funny because with my dad’s “habit” he only won a donut and a free coffee last year….apparently the most prizes are on the mediums….or the larges….i can’t remember, but they sure as hell aren’t on the XLs.
The TV ad says “1 in 6” chance to win. Who is the 1? Start collecting up your cups and see how many coffee/tea you need to buy before you win.
“1 in 6” odds just to win a free donut? Wow! Glad I’m not into coffee or donuts. I don’t think my poor old ticker could stand all the excitement!
Nevr mind that the name of their contest always makes me think of anally inserted dinner bread…rrrrrrrroll up the rim! Hahahahaha! That’s almost as funny as the McWrap with it’s silent “W”.
pesky elusive “e’s”!
I won a GPS
0-2 this year 🙁
I love Roll up the Rim – 2 free coffees so far! Yee-haw!
Leaf, it would be more of a waste because using your reusable mug at Timmy the donut’s place is, similar to a lot of other environmental ad trends, complete propaganda.
When you hand them a reusable mug, they still take a new paper cup, fill it with said amount of coffee and throw away the cup.
Either way, Op, if it is that big of a deal to you, why exactly do you go to Timmy the donuts?
Actually Swampdonkey (and anyone else wondering), NO paper cups in the entire country are recyclable, no matter what it may say on it, because they are all coated with plastic. They are NOT compostable either, even the “biodegradable” cups are a load of crap, and end up in landfills along with all the damn ugly TH cups. Yes I’ve done my homework, thanks.
Any municipality that accepts paper cups in their organics or recycling only does so to prevent littering, and make people feel a little better about themselves getting their paper cups every day (greenwashing in a way). They actually are separated and sent to landfills.
I agree with you OP, it’s a wasteful contest that should be modified. Surprised they still gave you an empty cup, holy super waste batman. Travel mugs rock my socks 🙂
TAKE THEM ALL, SCRUNCH INTO BALL, GIVE THE TO T.H. AS A GIFT, AND QUICKLY EXIT THRU OPENING IN WALL.
So tell them you don’t want the chance to win, or give it to someone who likes that sort of thing.
What’s so difficult in saying ” I don’t want the paper cup”? Clearly Im missing something here!
Why do people care about wasting cups… we’re doing waaay worse shit to the earth haha…
Swill? What’s wrong with Tim Horton’s coffee? I don’t really drink coffee I’m just curious lol
g.f., it tastes what dog piss would probly taste like. and for one cup, it a 10 cup fill up with piss. that shit seems to go right thru some people.
Guerilla Funk I drink my coffee black.
So theres not a couple ounces of cream/milk & a couple scoops of sugar in there to hide the taste of ‘burnt coffeebeans’ I have in the past also tasted from more than 1 location a faint rubbery taste.
plus it rips the guts out of me. But surprisingly some of our fastfood hamburger joints make a pretty decent cup of coffee. I no longer drink a lot of coffee, 1 sometimes 2 cups a day.
When I have the time before work (like today) I like to start it with a couple of cups of Japanese green tea with matcha.
OP, odds are most people in NS don’t have the moolah to go next door to the car dealer and walk away with a new car, so the contest is still valid IMO. As for the ads, yeah they are grating but I tape all shows now and FFWD thtough the marketing. Even NHL is 3 minutes hockey then ads ad nauseam.
I just checked the prizes and LOL the car is now a Matrix; QUITE a departure from the Yukon of old. Now that they are owned by someone else I notice the car keeps dropping. Soon it will be a 10-speed from the flea market…
That being said I would still take it if I won, but I can’t drink TH so SOL me.
Didn’t you hear though? This year it’s even MORE prizes than EVER!!!
Doesn’t that make you want to pass up your latte and grab a burnt coffee from Timmy’s? 😛
I love my Keurig coffee maker :):)!
Is it good? I have been thinking of buying one, but I never tasted any of its drinks and didn’t know if it was any good. I do know however it definitely isn’t environmentally friendly with all the little plastic cups.
It’s really good and convenient :)! I actually bought it for my BF for Christmas but he had to leave it here because bringing a coffee maker on a plane would be awkward. The only thing is, there doesn’t seem to be a large variety of the k-cups unless you go online, or into ‘WorstBuy’ or ‘PastShop’ or even ‘Not Beyond Bed & Bath’. I was actually looking into getting one of the Tassimo ones because they seem to have a better selection of their T-discs in grocery stores and they make all kinds of drinks, not just coffee and tea, like all those lattes and cappacinos and whatnots that I love the most :).
