A rainy Sunday morning after a late night out, breakfast in a Halifax diner seems a good idea to stave off a hangover. Cheap, fast and delicious is what we expected but not at all what we received. After ordering the two egg special that comes with toast and asking to substitute a bagel for the toast, a cup of coffee and a yogurt cup, I didn’t expect my bill of $16.73. My friend ordered two eggs and a pancake instead of the toast, yogurt cup, coffee and small juice and her bill came to $19.49. Both of us assumed we would be charged extra for substitutions but were quite surprised to find out we were charged for a completely separate menu item. I decided to inquire about this to the owner at the cash (who made a joke about not minding taking my money) only to be told it says on the menu there are no substitutions and that the costs of bagels and pancakes are more than toast. Ok, so I understand paying an extra dollar for the request, not an extra meal charge altogether, we are at a DINER after all. And it’s not the waitress’s fault, she doesn’t make the “rules” so don’t get mad at her! After not budging on our complaint and insisting we didn’t read the menu right so in fact it was our fault, we both paid but will never step foot into a place whose eggs aren’t even done properly. The fact that we need to be tricked into paying a high bill when we could’ve gotten much more food at any other breakfast establishment for that price left us with a bad taste in our mouths. —Dissatisfied Bluenoser

I see whatcha did there, DB. Message received >; )
“Just a diner”.
ouch. feel free to let the food and drink section know as well..
you have the ability to save others the trouble…
do what most smart folks would do, stay the fuck home, and make it yourself. other than that, be prepared to get gouged again.
Do you ever leave your house for anything LS? You seem to say the same thing any time anyone talks about anything on the “outside”.
Wow, imagine the feast you could have made if you had spent it @ the grocery store, & cooked it yourself. That sounds like the cost of a dinner bill, more so, than a breakfast bill. That’s crazy.
Nothing beats home cooking.
After eating out for 40 years, I’m with Kontee on this one. Rip this establishment a new orifice on any HRM food review sites you can find and channel your frustration into spreading the word about this thieving cuntflap.
There are no substitutions because it’s a “special”, it says so on the menu. Thats pretty common on “specials”, because they are usually money losers meant to draw customers in, counting on not everyone wanting a non substitution “special”. Get all pissy at your own dumb self for being a dumbass, not on a policy you neglected to read/comprehend.
See the Menu? Fuck off, order from it; if you don’t like what is on the menu, then don’t eat there. If you want exactly what you want and you can’t get it at a restaurant – THEN MAKE IT AT HOME DUMBASS. I go the restaurants and listen to stupid little shits, hem-ing and haw-ing about what they want and changing shit – DELAYING ME FROM MY ORDER. You DESERVE the extra charge for taking EXTRA TIME as well as EXTRA PRODUCT. Me, I am going to try a new Restaurant this week, one I have never been too; your sign off has inspired me to go to the Bluenose Restaurant.
if i was served rotten eggs, i would understand. learn to read
$16.00 and $20.00 for breakfast is insane! If I understand, they added the full price of the substitution to the full price of the “special” instead of the difference between the toast and the bagel and the toast and the pancake respectively. I feel for you OP. If you’re going to spend that money, might as well go to Smitty’s and eat one of those 700 calorie skillets. Mmmm.
why didn’t you pull a dine n dash or talk your way out of the extra charges. I’d be like, 10 dolla pancake?? HAIL NAW!
Or here’s another suggestion: Move the fuck outta downtown halifax….shits too expensive there and for WHAT? I went shoppin Downtown for a maxi dress (xtra large mu mu tent for this ASS) and bitches ova there wanted fuckin 80 bucks for a stupid cotton sundress…aw hail no, I went across the bridge to ye ol’ Giant Tigre Boutique and got 4 dresses @ 12 buck each and they’re WAY nicer!! FUCK OVERPRICED HALIFAX.
DARKSIDE 4 LIFE Muddafuckas
so kontee, when should i drop by, and what you want me to bring?
the point you missed mel, was that if they bitch about the cost, then they should have stayed hom and ate. has nothing to do with me going out or staying in.
if i go out, i know exactly what will happen, and won’t be writing a bitch about it, cause i never foresaw the other shit.
if you or anyone else wants to be an idiot and pay that fucking much for shit, that you could probly get at hope cottage for nothing, go the fuck ahead. i will laugh at you all. and no, i don’t go to hope cottage to eat. i make my meals at home, where most of my workload is, and save thhe rigors of a bitch tirade from douchebags.
The Bluenose is the most overpriced diner slop downtown – that’s why all the politicians go there.
This seems pretty simple just read the menu and you won’t have an issue. If its a special normally to get the special price, you need to buy what the special contains.

Gig. Itty.
I have a shorter career than you, Mamam TTFN, but I’m making up for it.
Wp
mmmmmmmmmmmmm, skillet.
after the fuss of making them at home a few times, I’ve conceded that it’s easier to just pay the 12 bucks and get them to make it.

Search around a bit. Makes you regret certain dining choices.
See. I’d be ok with lambasting OB for not reading the menu if they actually got the stuff they said they wanted to make the substitution for.
I’d be asking where my goddamned toast is!
ALso: fuck you zed. Now I want a fucking skillet.
Maybe next time ask them to explain the ‘no substitutions’ policy that they mention on the menu? eh? Idiots.
stupid price…yes…raping policy…yes…still a dumbass for not checking on the cost prior to waitress leaving your table or checking the fine print?…yes….probably the same folks who complain when they order their macdonalds burger a specific way and fly off the handle when its not just so…and who the fuck orders yogurt cups at a diner???….if you order those you might as well stay home…
If there’s going to be a significant difference in the price, the server should let the customer know. Especially if they are going to be charged for two meals! They were charged for the special AND charged for pancakes. That’s clearly bullshit.
