Everything else is closed. Even NSCC. You stay open. Staff have to risk life and limb, take a vacation day or lose pay because you have determined that it is safe for us to go to work. I imagine the fact that there are no students this time of year played a large role in this decision. I guess one of the south end universities didn’t learn their lesson a few years back when an employee froze to death walking to work in a snowstorm when everyone else closed. If universities are the “employers of choice” then all hope is lost. —Life Risker

OB, you only work a 32.5 hour work week. Maybe, you should have to work while the rest of us stay home.
Stupid complaint.

R.I.P. Ronnie.
It’s 3c and raining…
Jesus Christ, MOST offices are open.
Suck it up.
I’d like to point out that instance occurred during ‘White Juan’.
Go blow your nose with two loonies, OP – generations of people have ‘survived’ many a snow/slush/ice storm and managed to go to work just fine – often because they wouldn’t get paid if they didn’t show up. I worked in the public service for decades and the only ‘snow day’ I ever had off was during fucking White Juan a few years back – suck it up, Princess Pussywand, and get some ice walkers for the bottom of your boots.
Ob’s just pissy because they didn’t get a free day off from their over-pampered, unionized job.
Has everyone ever read the collective agreements for staff at these ‘south end universit[ies]?’
Zero sympathy, ob. Use one of your comp days.
Ps: I’ve had a few jobs at these universities and I can say for certain that they are pretty sweet deals.
I would hate to see you where from the moment you get up till the moment you get home you are DRIVING instead of complaining the little time it takes to convey your carcass to a cushy job inside with all the amenities…..some people’s children….crying about how hard it was to get to work…..Spare Me please.
Suck it up Buttercup. In the real world, real people have to go to work regardless of the weather.
studded winter tires, a 4 wheel drive & watch your speed, there is almost no storm that will stop you …the problem is all the assholes with 3 season tires who believe because they are mislabelled “ALL season tires” go out & try driving around like its a rainy day/night in july ! ! ! here’s a hint folks if you put your vehicle on a slope of 5 degrees or less & from a dead stop try moving forward & your tires spin or you slip & slide … put ‘er in park & go back inside !
all season tires mean summer tires
Unless you’re homeless, you have to be pretty fucking stupid to freeze to death in urban Nova Scotia.
It wasn’t so bad. I work at msvu drove from sackville, took about 40 mins and while it was slippery, it was more dangerous on campus than the roads.
A SCHOPENHAUREAN?
“If universities are the ’employer of choice’ then all hope is lost.” Life Risker
On the basis of his claim that “all hope is lost,” I would have to say that the bitcher here is a philosophy professor specializing in the thought of the pessimist, Schopenhauer.
For Schopenhauer, his pessimism made it possible for men to take to philosophy without having to persuade themselves that all evil can be explained away. While optimism assumes that the universe exists to please us, the pessimist assumes the opposite, that it exists to displease us. While scientifically there is no evidence one way or the other, Schopenhauer’s pessimist is less likely to be led astray by illusory hopes. It is in that sense that “all hope is lost” is the more persuasive alternative.
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
hmm, in the time i was in school we had 3 snow days….total. at the time school board policy was 3 feet of snow or more = snow day….here its 5 cm and oh god the world is ending. instead of putting on some air of safety OB, where you know you are in so much jeopardy of losing life and limb…why dont you just put it down as what it truly is…you are a lazy, self entitled crybaby bitch looking for ANY excuse not to live up to your responsibilities..under the guise that you were somehow in any mortal danger at all. makes me sick.
These fucking storms have been screwing everyone up.
Traffic’s been shit all week from idiots driving like maniacs.
I know I don’t like to drive in crappy weather…so I don’t.
I take the bus and make it someone else’s problem to deal with shitty motorists…
or just stay the fuck home and deal.
There’s no reason, really, for anyone to be driving into the city.
Take transit, and if you live outside HRM, drive to a free park and ride and take the bus from there if you need to get downtown. I did it when I commuted from wolfville and it was just as fast (took the 84, for instance). And that was before the link buses.
Cheaper, too, because I didn’t have to pay for downtown parking.
Hello Life,
If you had the fortune to work with me, I would tell you that I accept some tardiness on storm days .. but I EXPECT you to show up and work. If the boss can make it to work, you should as well .. without calling in sick, etc.
Want my advice OP? Never get a job in transportation.
