I`ve really HAD IT with candy-ass pathetic smokers and their so-called “rights”: are you fucking kidding us with this bullshit?! It’s 2010! Not the 1970s!
Typical addict victim-talk. I am disgusted by the number of street smokers in this town – more than any other I’ve seen in Canada or US. You people cluster in doorways like so many cockroaches, forcing anyone who actually cares for their health and/or has chronic lung disease (like me) to get gassed as we dodge through your cancer-stank to get to our jobs, homes, stores, etc.
Spring Garden Rd should be renamed Stink Garden Rd as it’s getting ridiculous trying to make it down the street while still able to breathe…
I particularly love the handy catch-all excuse: “there’s air pollution anyway”. Fuck off. That’s like saying it’s not so bad to murder an individual person because, sadly, yep, there’s war go’in on and people being killed all over the world. You are the ONLY addicts that can directly damage other innocent people’s health with YOUR addiction – with the exception of pregnant addicts.
You wanna exercise some rights, dumbasses, how about your “right” to pay for every cent of your healthcare, which you drain from this province more than any other. Or the rights of farmers exploited by the tobacco industry (which profits from killing you).
Lobbying continues, and soon you`ll enjoy “the right” to be able to poison only yourselves, in the privacy of your own home or car. Suck on that. —Grow a pair and get into a cessation program
This article appears in Jun 17-23, 2010.

CIGARETTES ARE LEGAL SO FUCK OFF.
hey dumbass they do pay for their healthcare and alot of yours by the exorbitant tax on smokes get your facts right and stfu when your an ignorant ass
hmm.. sounds like you don’t like it here much. maybe you should fucking leave.
i can only say this to you once o.p., if you don’t like it, too fucking bad. seig heil.
Fuck the anti-smoking Nazis are out in full force today. Now fuck off and go to one of those other paradises you speak of.
Pansy…
OP you’re suffering …GOOD !
I’m a non smoker…about the only one I know who tried to get the ASSHOLES in Government to THINK , just one time in their pampered fucking lives & stop the nonsense of getting rid of smoking rooms.
The replies I got from my MP (his assistant actually) & the local MLA was also to busy to reply, so the only sensible thing done in my lifetime to give BOTH SMOKERS & NONSMOKERS equal footing is now fucked up, because of assholes & government who knee jerk to the loudest ( and the antismoking lobbiests were screaming like young girls in danger)
IF there were still smoking rooms, that’s where the majority of smokers would go !
So OP instead of bitching here & accomplishing NOTHING…why not start a petition to BRING BACK SMOKING ROOMS.
Then nonsmokers like you & an asthma sufferer & nonsmoker like me won’t have to be bothered anymore.
Because common sense says if they can’t smoke anywhere but outside.
That’s where they’ll be.
I fully endorse this bitch.
I particularly liked the reference to “Stink Garden Road”.
If this individual were running for mayor they’d get my vote.
Smokers: your days are numbered (in more ways than one). Time to pack it in, butt out and join the rest of us so that together, we may embrace a smoke-free future, free from carcinogens and IQ lowering pollutants.
in fifty years when less than 1% of the population smokes and you’re sitting in a province with a continually aging population (therefore rising health costs), decreasing tax base, shrinking workforce and no future…think of this bitch. bet you’ll wish you had a group of people that would willingly hand over a billion dollars or so in tax revenue. good luck!
i am a back to the future coaster.
lol @ smokers getting pissed off. Poor babies.
Enclosed smoking shelters at bus stops. Now there’s an idea.
Oh, for fucks sakes, give it a rest you self righteous asshole.
“Typical addict victim-talk. I am disgusted by the number of street smokers in this town – more than any other I’ve seen in Canada or US”.
That’s bullshit and you know it, have you not been to say…fucking Montreal? The only difference is that there are more whining maggots on the streets of Halifax regarding this issue.
“I particularly love the handy catch-all excuse: “there’s air pollution anyway”. Fuck off.”
Well that fucking excuse is much better than your health care argument considering we pay enough taxes in smokes to pay for your fucking health care as well. You want to make that argument why not look at the statistics of the rising strain overweight people are having on the health care system.
You want to look for a cause to help your issues with smoke inhalation, why not fight to allow smokeless cigarettes to become legal in Canada. Oh wait, that might actually take away from some of the health care we pay for you.
Oh, and I agree with what More said too.
“IQ lowering pollutants”?!
Did I read that right? I don’t know, if that was the case, India wouldn’t have an over educated populace.
And if smokers don’t have rights, smoking should be illegal.
I often wonder how many people would still smoke if they added a really awful (well, more awful) smell to them…like the smell of a sweaty, fishy, unwashed girl or guy, or skunk or something.
And I said it before, but what the heck, I’ll say it again; a smoker’s right to smoke will always be greater than a non-smoker’s right not to.
Annd it always seems to be the smokers who never have any breathing problems…I get bronchitis every now and again and it’s fucking awful. I used to get a whollle lot more when I lived with my dad who smoked all the time. Now though, I live in an old house converted into an apartment, and it’s super drafty and every tenant except me smokes so it all floats up to me. It’s great :D. I’ll just ask for them to pay for my next puffer :)!
“You are the ONLY addicts that can directly damage other innocent people’s health with YOUR addiction” – Dear OP, this statement makes it clear to me that you’re a narrow-minded, arrogant and judgmental idiot. I can think a plenty of addictions that have a direct negative impact on the health of innocent people. Go spout your shite somewhere else.
Smoking, cologne and perfume, smells of cleaners smells of dust, smell of new paint, smell of plastic off gassing from the dashboard of your new Toyota, fuck people are a bunch of whiners, boo hoo your allergic to cologne, Well I’m allergic to wasps but I’m not about to go on some anti flowering plant crusade to get all flowering plants removed from the Public Gardens because of my problem! Cigarettes pay for the health care system, Unfortunately fat, unhealthy people which are usually the whiniest of them are the biggest drain on Health care Oh I’m fat poor me I dont exercise and I drive everywhere why am I so fat waaaaaaaaaah
Cigarettes have to be the only disgusting, killer, addictive drug that its addicts will get into to-the-death fights over.
There’s absolutely no reason to smoke other than you’re addicted to the shit. Who cares if the taxes pay health care costs? You know whose health care gets covered by that tax? The people suffering lung disease and cancer from smoking.
Grow a brain, smokers. You look stupid, you smell like shit, you’re addicted to a drug that you pay a lot of money for each month, and you complain when other people don’t want to be around you. Losers.
It’s a free country. Smoke three packs a day until your lungs turn black and you cough up chunks of them into your breakfast cereal every morning. I don’t care.
But since the link between second hand smoke and lung cancer is well-established, you had better keep your filthy habit where it belongs – in the privacy of your own home.
And if you smoke around your kids, then your “I don’t give a shit if this kills me” attitude should be amended to “I don’t give a shit if this kills them”. A fine sentiment! Stellar parenting! You should be getting a stipend from the tobacco companies for starting your kids down the road to nicotine addiction before they’re even old enough to say “Please mommy don’t hurt me”.
Smokers have the right to suck shit into their lungs all day long, as long as they’re not being a nuisance and health threat to the rest of us.
well now, from what i read and see around me on any gven day, i have come to a conclusion. smokers smoke, either because they want to, or it’s next to impossible to quit. or non smokers are pretentious douchebags, and have super small dicks and /or no tits. and they also have no life, other than to whine and cry about big bad tobacco, hey we all know and get that you flaming fucking fools. yes cigarettes stink, but so does your cheap motherfucking cologne and perfumes, used to cover the stink of your own bodies, no doubt. and yes we get that smokers are gonna die, sooner or later we all do. a drag on health care, i think not, ask any provider in health, on avrage, nons, go to emergency rooms and hospitals 4 1/2 times more than smokers. so called sports are a major factor in that. smoking tobacco is still legal in this country comrade, so go the fuck someplace else with your hypocrite bullshit. you want something to really bitch about, then try the clear cutting and bears in backyards thing, or about the smelvin clan and their flaunt of your laws. or how about how many kids starve in this country every year, while billions are wasted on stupid sports arenas and shit like that. smokers are here to stay, and unless governments completely make tobacco illegal to have or use, then shut the fuck up, or i will blow a whole lungful of smoke in your faces, next time you whine to me, outside, in the wide open spaces.
Suck it back smokers! Cancer is in your future. Hopefully sooner than later.
UFB— “I don’t give a shit if this kills them”. A fine sentiment! Stellar parenting! You should be getting a stipend from the tobacco companies for starting your kids down the road to nicotine addiction before they’re even old enough to say “Please mommy don’t hurt me”
While I agree that children should kept away from smoking, stating that secondhand smoke leads to addiction is just as alarmist and incorrect as your “IQ lowering” statement.
I lived in a home where my mother smoked like a chimney. By your reasoning, I should be sucking back on an oxygen tank while I wait for the grim specter of cancerous death to take me away. But you see, I don’t have asthma or any breathing problems and while I was growing up, I was involved in a local soccer team until an unfortunate knee injury, so I managed to be quite fit as well. Where does this bring me? I don’t smoke. Never wanted to. Sure, I’ve tried it, and every now and again, I’ll smoke a cigar (or other substances), but not at any regularity. To this day, I still come out clean in my medical check-ups, except for my cholesterol and blood pressure being a little high, but that’s something that comes along with my rather sedentary lifestyle.
Non-smokers are capable of just as much ignorance and idiocy as smokers.
As long as cigarettes ARE LEGAL, you non-smoking pontificators can go suck on a bus exhaust pipe. And, no, I don’t smoke but I despise self-righteous morons who think the world should work one way and one way only.
I’d rather see someone smoking outside than some tub of blubber waddle around shoving french fries in their pudgy gobs and costing our health care system plenty.
Salvia and inhalents are legal too….I’ll just huff on those from now on and see how many people say something :P.
Urban Farmer Bob says that smokers have to quit “so we may embrace a smoke-free future, free from carcinogens and IQ lowering pollutants.”
EVEN IF EVERYONE WHO SMOKED IN THE WORLD QUIT TODAY, WE WOULD STILL HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ALL OF THE ABOVE. FUCKING JEEZ.
Less than 12% of the whole province smokes, ffs.
What I find really sad is the kids who start. at school Or young, intelligent 20 somethings who just pick up the habit… and are stuck with it for life. Slowly saping them of their health and youth. Hard to believe that people still START smoking these days with all the research and facts saying how bad it is for you. It’s one thing if you can’t quit because you started in the 60s… but come on folks, smoking just doesn’t make you sexier, why start now?
@Dr. Fever
Children of smoking parents are statistically more likely to become smokers themselves. I wasn’t trying to suggest that exposure to second hand smoke causes nicotine addiction, although I think the jury is still out on this one.
The IQ lowering effects of second hand smoke are well-established in the medical literature. Children of mothers who smoke are more likely to suffer from a whole host of medical problems than children of non-smoking mothers. Cognitive impairment is on the list.
Your relatively positive experience as the child of a smoking parent is what they call “anecdotal”. By itself it proves nothing. It doesn’t even cast doubt on the idea that second hand smoke isn’t harmful. Medical science doesn’t work that way. I’m pretty sure you know this.
The negative health impacts on children exposed to second hand smoke are significant. People can argue about their “right to smoke” all they want, but they are simply wrong if they believe that second hand smoke doesn’t cause health problems for non-smokers, especially children.
There is nothing “alarmist” or “incorrect” in anything I said. These are the facts.
You also wrote, “Non-smokers are capable of just as much ignorance and idiocy as smokers”. You’re probably right. But I would suggest that anyone, smoker or nonsmoker, who tries to claim that second hand smoke does no harm to innocent bystanders and uses that erroneous idea in an argument for smokers rights, is both ignorant AND an idiot.
@Dr. Fever
I made a typo in the previous post. (Maybe I’ve inhaled too much second hand smoke?) Here is the corrected paragraph:
Your relatively positive experience as the child of a smoking parent is what they call “anecdotal”. By itself it proves nothing. It doesn’t even cast doubt on the idea that second hand smoke is harmful. Medical science doesn’t work that way. I’m pretty sure you know this.
Motor vehicle accidents is the number one killer of children. Following your argument, the solution in preventing this is to ban the use of automobiles.
It is my right to do roundhouse kicks into unoccupied space, however, once the space is occupied by, say, your face, it suddenly becomes assault.
For everyone of you who will find my analogy to be too trite, try to remember all of the bullshit analogies you smokers’ rights advocates are obsessed with (car accidents and air pollution).
“What I find really sad is the kids who start. at school Or young, intelligent 20 somethings who just pick up the habit… and are stuck with it for life”
Hey bud, started smoking when I was 18, guess what… I was able to quit with a bit of difficulty
Having lost 3 members of my family due to illnesses directly linked to smoking, I fully support this bitch.
I must say though, there’s a few gems of quality pro-smoking arguments provided here, no doubt. In fact, I think I might change my mind and go grab a pack of smokes.
@Kim_NS: Valid point. Let’s also ban old age. Oh, and since suicide is one of the leading causes of death for males, we should also ban suicide and depression. We should also consider putting a ban on pregnancy, because birth irreversably leads to death 70 to 80 years down the road (on average).
@LS: Relevant and to-the-point, as usual. How many non-smokers’ dicks did you measure to come to the conclusions of your super scientific study? And who did you hire to conduct the boob-part of your study? From reading a sample of your posts on this forum, I don’t believe you’ve seen a naked woman in decades. By the way, it has been found that smoking increases your chances of becoming impotent. Not that it matters to you, though…but just a FYI.
And to those using the “…but it’s impossible to quit” argument: Bullshit. I know lots of ex-smokers. My dad gave it up 15 years ago, after smoking from age 12 until age 50. Of course the death of his brother (who was also a long-time smoker) from throat cancer was a pretty good wake-up call.
So: smoke all the fuck you want inside your house or in your car. Not in public, not out on the streets…and we should fine your ass every time you use the entire world as your fucking ashtray…why is it ok to litter when it’s a cigarette butt?
I’m on NEITHER side of the arugments (pro/con smoke) I jus think everyone needs to shut the fuck up and get over it! A few lil wisps of smoke outside is not goin to give you terminal caner.
And while smoking does increase the chance of cancer, there’s also this thing called GENETICS that play a factor in that deal.
If you’re around a non smoker aruond a smoker, remove yourself from the situation, or speak up and ask the smoker to move down wind from you. If you’re a smoker be mindful of people around you! I’d set an example but… well…
Practically every angle of defence from either side is LAME! “I shouldn’t have to smell your cigarette” VS “I shouldn’t have to smell your dollar store perfume” blah-blah-fucking-blah
My Hub-Unit’s aunt smoked three packs a day of Export As for 70 years before she died at 82 – my grandmother smoked unfiltered cigarettes for 60 years before dying at age 88 – I suspect genetics do play a role.
I think the “blah-blah-fucking-blah” pretty much sums this all up thus far.
I love how the urban farmer just states… “oh, it’s fact” and they “are well established”…
without any sort of reference to show it is indeed the case.
48% of the female population with two kids or more who are under 30 have an IQ below 90…
it’s FACT…. and well established!
hrm…. really????
if it’s a fact and someone is calling you on it then fucking prove it.
If it’s a fact, that shouldn’t be too difficult.
First, my point was that the solution that followed from the anti-smokers argument doesn’t seem as viable when it is suggested that we removed other things that may contribute to the death of a child. Ron furthers my point with his other suggestions on things to ban due to the possibility of death.
Second, in light of all the other possible inhalants besides cigarettes smoke used around and by children–
such as living by an oil refinery or in a moldy house
using bubble-gum body spray and other such things
Raid, Toxo-nuko-grime-away cleaner being used to clean, etc.
how can it be determined that it was specifically the second-hand smoke that killed the 1000-3000 people in Canada whose death was claimed to be due to health problems related to second-hand smoke.
I mean, if the same statistics are saying that 450,000 deaths in Canada are related to smoking, wouldn’t it follow that the second-hand smoke related deaths should be much higher than the actual smokers numbers?
Ron Obvious: luckily I’m not relegated to smoking only in my house or car. I can actually smoke outdoors AND in public if I want, AT THE SAME TIME.
JUST FUCKING DO IT. WHO CARES WHETHER OR NOT SOMEONE ELSE GETS TAKEN OUT BY IT. RON BUDDY,COME SEE ME,SO I CAN BLOW A NICE BIG FUCKING LUNGFUL OF MY FUCKING TOXIC SMOKE IN YOUR FACE. TO ALL THE NON SMOKING PUBLIC, YOU ALSO HAVE THE RIGHT TO LICK YOUR BOTTOM PARTS AND LAY IN A CORNER AND WHINW AND CRY YOUR HEARTS OUT. GET BENT, GET FUCKED, AND GRAB A GOOD HEALTHY LUNGFUL OF FRESH AIR FROMTHE OIL PLANT IN DARTMOUTH.
@zZz
You stated the following:
“I love how the urban farmer just states… “oh, it’s fact” and they “are well established”…
without any sort of reference to show it is indeed the case.
. . .
If it’s a fact and someone is calling you on it then fucking prove it.
If it’s a fact, that shouldn’t be too difficult.”
It wasn’t difficult. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to share some facts with you.
Here is a link to a review article in the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/…
If you read through it you will find factual support for everything I’ve said, and much more. It is really quite disturbing, if you value the health of children.
@Kim_NS
I really don’t know what to make of your logic. Sure there are other things injurious to the health of children. Life is full of risks. Usually we work to minimize those risks. You offered the example of all the children killed and injured in car accidents, but even in this case many restrictions have been imposed to reduce the number of accident fatalities. Speed limits and the mandatory use of seat belts and child car seats are measures imposed to reduce the risk of injury and death in car accidents.
But I don’t agree with equating the damage done by second hand smoke to that done by car accidents. Choosing to smoke with children around is a deliberate act, not an accident. Exposing children to second hand smoke, especially when the health impacts are so well known, also makes it an abusive act in my book.
Smokers have the right to suck poisonous shit into their lungs all day long – in the privacy of their own homes. The rest of us don’t have to accommodate them. The fact that many smokers expose their children to second hand smoke is ridiculously self-centered. To claim that it does them no harm is just plain ignorant.
Maybe someone can cough up some stats about the percentage of anti-tobacco zealots who like to blaze up a little janjaweed or hotknife the Levant’s other export (after donairs I mean). In the privacy of your own home and after little Zachary and Caitlin have gone to bed of course. But Admiral, it’s neither addictive nor carcinogenic.
Sure it isn’t. That’s why you do it 5 nights a week and hork and spit like an Asian gambling den after that first hoot.
But at least it’s fair trade.
I am just saying that telling people smoking is bad for them is one thing. Hating on them and wishing them dead is another–especially when research and statistics are twisted to promote fear mongering and, as a result, hate towards others.
The article you suggested is full of ‘studies SUGGEST’, and such statements as “Several authors have argued that the evidence regarding ETS [environmental tobacco smoke] and asthma is strong enough to conclude that the relation is causal, although the mechanism has not been established.” In fact, it is stated that “The search continues for an ideal biomarker of exposure to ETS.” Hardly cold hard facts.
Good sense tell us that we should provide our children with clean, fresh air, of course. But, don’t wish death on a smoker because they are having a cigarette outside within a km of you or your child.
Urban Farmer Bob you seem like the poster child for NDP Nanny State Big in your face government… Congratulations! Now shave that beard you fucking hippie. That thing is way more dangerous to anyone’s health (or at least their eyes) than a little second hand smoke… lol!
Captain obvious : I’ll be on the lookout for you… (light… puff… exhale… repeat). I’m all over town! Uptown Downtown! See you around commie, I mean comrade
When writing a research report, I was told never to write “studies prove”; it is always “studies suggest” or “there is evidence to suggest that”. Causality is also hard to establish, especially when you cannot control all variables or it is not ethical to conduct an experiment with a real control group. (e.g., You will never be approved by the ethics board to conduct an experiment where you subject a group of pregnant women to second hand smoke in order to establish the effect of second hand smoke on fetus.) So it will never be possible to definitively speak about the causality, although in many cases causality can be established through deduction.
Having said that, yes many research articles are misleading or used for propaganda/fear mongering etc.
I find “wishing death upon someone” kind of pointless, as everyone dies. Wishing someone death RIGHT NOW, or a painful one, makes more sense. But then, “Karma is a bitch”, so better not to harbour such thoughts.
As I said in another thread, I have never been to a vehicle accident or domestic or fight, etc due to smoking. I’ve been to a hell of a lot due to alcohol. The costs involved are enormous and immediate from either the victim dying or becoming handicapped to families being ripped apart.
Yet the government says a kid can’t go into a tobacco shop or the wares advertised or shown, but liquour is heavily advertised, out in the open, and kids can go into the NSLC stores.
aw smoking makes good sense: it’s legal population control so we might as well suck all the taxes outta them first.
I just don’t wanna breathe it too. I agree that we should allow smoking rooms and smoking bars. It was asinine to take away those amenities.
But not in the bus shelters please.
Just a thought: Sex is legal, but not in public, and not when the other person is underage. Some choose not to engage until certain time in their life, like after marriage, or sometimes, never. It can be good for your health, but some people do die from engaging in it, or contract diseases that lead to illness/death, leading to a large amount of health care cost (not to mention the blue pills). Families can be torn apart if it involves extra-marital affair, cheating, incest, rape, etc. And it is heavily advertised in the media. I certainly don’t want to see any of you engaging in one in front of me, and definitely not in the bus shelters. Even if seeing you engage in one wouldn’t harm me in any way, I would not be comfortable with it, so I would ask you not to.
Just saying.
If a couple were getting it on in a bus sheltered, I’m not sure what my comfort level would be. Say it was a lesbian couple, I may stick around and watch.
Just sayin’
If they do… are they still expected to wave off the buses that go by?
cause that could take some concentration….
Twister would have to be a prerequisite. Although, if it was hot I’d happily wave the bus by for them. I have two hands one waving at the bus and the other holding my phone.
I’m so glad you said ‘phone’…
….because, you’d like… to see the video?
I don’t know bud, there might be privileges involved with something like that.
I just thought your other hand would be …. ahem… ‘elsewhere’…..
and didn’t need that image.
if smokers want to stink,go around with yellow teeth and hair, develop hard wrinkles, watch their health decline, live in stink boxes surrounded by smoke, wasting valuable time planning their next fix….just let them,I avoid them like the plague…I really get a kick watching them pathetically trying to stay warm or dry in the winter…someday, hopefully it will be socially unacceptable or illegal to smoke on the streets, much like it’s socially unacceptable and illegal now to drink an open beer walking down the street.
I’d prefer that to a violent alcoholic.
And we would be inside smoking but they won’t allow it so outside we go. Inside or out make up your fucking mind.
but it’s illegal to drive with bare feet right bro tim?
Not sure Painey but I think it’s pretty much illegal to drive nude below the waist.
i drove ONCE with bare feet, but these were not crisis situations
bro tim…smoke in your own home, not in the workplace or streets…remember, smoking is a choice,it’s yours to make, not mine to suffer
So then don’t go driving your polluting car or ride on the diesel spewing bus, I don’t want to inhale that shit. Friving and iding is a choice too. So fuck you.
