And yet we’ve all been told repeatedly by Kay that this is precisely the reason that she chose to move here. I’ve seen Nova Scotia tourism ads too and nowhere have they even implied a less judgemental society. As if less judgement is high on the list of what tourists seek in vacation destinations. Key word here is tourists. These ads are contracted and designed to attract visitors not permanent residents. I’m a CFA who has had no problem getting along with Nova Scotians, so it is not like all CFA’s get treated like Kay claims to. Then again I would not go to India and start hating on the Indians because their ways are not what I expected because of some tourism ads or because I arrogantly felt in any way superior to them.

I do feel bad for anyone who comes here looking for that kind of thing, because they will be sadly disappointed. But that kind of cartoon character doesn’t exist ANYWHERE, and I doubt it ever has.
I do, however, love Nova Scotia for different reasons than those extolled by the Dept of Tourism. It is very difficult to define why a person feels at home in one place and not another.
Personally, I am not comfortable what a lot of people mistake for “friendliness”—that kind of in-your-face “howdy howdy howdy” stuff you sometimes get at chain restaurants and motivational seminars. I am a much more reserved person in real life, who prefers things to be subtle and low key.
My home these days happens to be in Nova Scotia, and I am very content about that. I am lucky enough to be surrouned by friends, family and colleagues that I connect with, for many different reasons. For the most part, I even like the climate—although I will admit that today, yes, a place like California has definite appeal. There *are* many odd things about Nova Scotia, certainly, but, well, what can I say—I made a committment to the place and it has rewarded me.
I still believe that any place is what you make it—that’s just how life works. I think there is genuine “friendliness” to be found in many places, with certain exceptions. Sometimes, though, it just looks a little different than what you might have first expected.

Well, if one was inclined to believe the provincial tourism ads you’d swear you were going to be met by Green Gabled Anne as soon as your feet hit red soil. Nova Scotia is not the only province to play upon it’s heritage and culture with tourism ads. These tourist ads target audience is tourists, not newcomers.
