Actually, 13.7 cents/KWh… but once you add the tax to fund inefficiency NS, you are pushing close to 16c I’m sure
(Just in case anyone is interested, the actual charge is 13.79 cents per KWh – the inefficiency NS tax is .573 cents per KWh, for a total charge of 14.363 cents per KWh)
Also, here is the best data I’ve found on continental power rates, for comparison purposes. Quebec Hydro doesn’t mind releasing these sort of details, since their power charge is almost a third of what ours is.

maybe we need more waterfalls. i am a weenie about things like hydro, milk or gas for the car, oil for the furnace. i don’t look at the price/costs. if i have to buy it, i have to buy it.
taxes made me mad though, despite the inevitability of them. i can’t do my own taxes, i get blinded by rage thinking about govt waste. esp ‘fact finding’ trips.

No, as I mentioned in my previous rant, this is what happens when no one gives a fuck. You will all bitch and complain at the water cooler that you cant pay the light bill with your 13 dollar an hour jobs then go home and do nothing. Shut the fuck up complainaing and actually do something about it.
Demand a local utility, call MPP or whatever they call them here, demand better service from NSP, just dont bitch and complain and do nothing productive. Its the same as the people who bitch and complain about the shitty salaries then line up everytime a 12 dollar an hour job comes along. If nobody would accept the unacceptable, it would change. Simple. Nobody here can be bothered to help themselves. Thats the problem.

Red was Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana, Yellow Atlantic, Marvin Gardens and Ventnor, Green was Pacific, Pennsylvania and … North Carolina?,Dark Blue Boardwalk and Park Place, Purple Mediterranean and Baltic,Light Blue Connecticut, Oriental and .., Orange New York .. I think Tennessee may have been one can’t remember the other.

But it’s NOT that simple. We are talking about an essential service utility. It’s not like we can just boycott NSP or refuse to pay out of protest to their rate increases. We’ll end up just as bitter and whole lot more colder.

I’ll get back to that first point in a second. You contradict your second and third suggestions by saying “just don’t bitch and compland and do nothing productive” because we HAVE been calling our MLA’s (Members of the Legislative Assembly), our premier just chalks it up to increased coal prices, (I can’t believe we still burn coal in this day and age), and shrugs his shoulders. We HAVE been demanding better service from NSP and it continuously gets us nowhere. To me, this would also be “doing nothing productive.”
And as far as your first suggestion goes about forming a local utility, that won’t necessarily mean automatic rate decreases. It’s explained better here in this article I found:

but essentially it says that simply ending Nova Scotia Power’s monopoly would not result in a decrease in rates, as it is unlikely competition would increase due to the almost prohibitive astronomical capital investment to get started. If new competitors were in the market, would they have to erect their own infrastructure, (i.e. poles, lines, substations, generating plants, etc) which would be obscenely expensive or would they’d have to rent usage of existing infrastructure from NSP, which, as you can imagine, would cost a premium as well.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m just as fed up with this constant gouging and NSP’s and URB’s delusion that we all have bottomless pockets, but I honestly don’t know what the solution is.
I DO think that some sort of fast-tracked program to get us off the dependance of coal is a must and I would love to see more wind generating stations like the one just outside of Amherst, but then this has got it’s own hurdles as well; communities lobbying against them because they ruin their view and are too noisy??
Any realistic ideas would be most welcomed.

too right, we’re having a camera scope of our plumbing, the tree on the city side is growing roots into the pipe. either way they have to dig it up and fix it, how much is on their side is yet to be determined. after reading comments in other media about the hwc, i shudder at what is going to happen. timothy, i like reading your comments in those same *other mediums*

BroTim I hear about what’s going on in the city & it makes me really happy I’ve got a well & septic system.
A new submersible well pump, under $400 bucks & I can install it myself, mine is presently 7 years old.
Getting my double chamber Septic tank pumped (which was done last year …first time in over 7 years) was $345.00.
THat’s 800 dollars for 7 years of running water & working septic !
Just a bit cheaper than paying the city !
