I don’t understand it when parents of older teens say things like – my daughter/son listens to that really hard heavy metal (said with an indulgent smile) but not RAP thank god.
k wait. does that mean ….
if they’re listening to megadeth, rammstein or Korn, that’s ok, because it’s just a phase they all go thru and eventually they’ll find their way to parent acceptable music like crosby stills nash and young, or the beatles, or some classic bob seger, or even the dixie chicks who would be great if only they’d stop having opinions,
but obviously Rap music is going to send your kids straight to jail. I’m sure THEY got a cell lined up – the minute the debit card registered the purchase of the …GASP….Rap album. customer flagged for further investigation. bought a rap album. move that name straight to the no fly list.

“rap music” = oxymoron.
I think its amazing how people can call it music when all they “sing” about is bitches and ho’s and going to the club…over and over and over..every fucking song.
funny how you narrowminded knobs thing that all rap talks about btches and hoes. Most hip hop doesnt in fact talk about any of this stuff. However, the stations such as BET, and VH1 that are run by white people, jam that shit down your throat. Mos Def, Common, Talib Kweli will be foreign names to you.
Yeah they are Homie and unfortunately the crap that is “jammed down our throat” is the mainstream and is what the kids listen to. On the flip side, though, it is the responsibility of the parents to monitor what their kids are listening to. I know I don’t let my stepson listen to that garbage. I don’t even let him listen to a lot of the stuff I listen to like most metal.
thing is… most the kids that listen to it …. arent black. while you get a majority that glorify it. Most actually listen to the lyrical genius of the use of the english language. The use of metaphors in hiphop (regardless of type) is borderline brilliant. Too bad most people judge it for the chorus and the cheesey music videos.Even nonsense like Lil Wayne, and 50 cent, have excellent lyrics. If this shit was said without music, like Spoken Word artists, or said to jazz music like SLAM poetry is, people dont say shit. Conversely for the white folk, we dont lump all that shit you listen to and think it is all like nickleback. Why is it that people that dont listen to rap generalize it to be about violence or hoes? Ya never hear about the urban world referring to rock music as white boy whine music. Or country as complain about my dog music.
By any generally accepted definition of music it requires harmony, melody, and rhythm. One out of three doesn’t qualify this crap as music. It is tribal chanting more or less. Call it what you want except don’t call it music. Why are people down on it? The trashing of traditional mainstream cultures always results in that effect. Infiltation of ghetto urban and largely black norms into white middle-class society is the current manifestation of that phenomenon. It is not surprising that people who belive in the values of mainstram society don’t want to accept a type of expression that promotes misogyny, violence, and crime as a normal way of life.As a member of white middle-class society I naturally feel that all rap is rubbish and I look forward to its demise.
I’d like to weigh in on this one. I don’t listen to rap or hip hop….but I could care less about content. Rap is no more offensive than say, that fucking STOOPID ostentatious crap that was all over the radio a while back: “you’re beautifuuuul…it’s trooooo….” (oh excuse me, I just vomited all over my keyboard….)As a parent, I have no desire to police the content of what my kid listens to, but I’ll be aware of and involved in what he’s listening to. Having said that, the boom-titty beat drives me a little crazy, especially when someone drives around with it at full volume and decides to roll the windows down to share it with the rest of us. (When’s the last time some hick accosted you with a drive-by rendition of “Country Road”?)Bottom line: yeah, it’s music as much as anything else is. Do I want to listen to it, or Korn, or Britteny freekin Spears? Hell, no.
Wow Keith, that is the most narrowminded thing i have heard on this topic.1) there is more than just a beat in most hiphop2) again, you are only exposed to the shit that radio jams down your throat so the guys i mentioned earlier, you would have no knowledge of the stuff they put out.Its funny, the people that bash rap, only listen to the spoonfed shit on the radio. Its like “techno”. Ask anyone that goes to a club if they listen to “techno”. they will not answer you with a yes. They will correct you, since you are likely using a term that is so generic. People that dont listen to that genre are ignorant to the many forms of “techno”, such as trance, euro, garage, two step, drum and bass, jungle, electro. To them its all the same.however, if you go to a metallica fan and say they are the same genre as Good Charlotte, or Simple Plan, they lose thier minds. Its a shame that people bash other’s music preferance as music is subjective.
Coyotex,,, why the fuck would anybody care if you like Indian music… Nobody fucking cares… Nobody
Bizzy is one of the funiest rappers in the clique, him and Ghettosocks. Good times with them cats. Its amazing that people in THIS city of all places can say rap is about thug and girls and shit, and the biggest current things from this country are from here, and they dont talk about the bling and the floss and stuff
Rap Music is nothng more than a misogomist spew with too much fucking bass. Its promotion of hate, crime and violence is more than enough reason to loathe it completely. To acknowledge it as ‘music’ is even a sadder statement.
I agree with Homie….Rap has many varying styles, and to clump it all together as “crap” is just plain ignorant. If you don’t like what you hear, that’s fine, but to say it’s “not music” is pretty insulting to the artists and tradition of rap which has been around since the 70’s!
I actually have to agree with the homie on this one (le gasp). Do I regularly listen to rap or hip hop (two very different things)? not really. But are the occasionally tracks trapped in my ipod? yeah. Both genras have some really interesting lyrics and musical and rythmic patterns sometimes…..yeah, there’s a driving beat, which often overshadows the melody etc but if you actually listen to some of it, htere’s a really neat weaving in and out of patterns that’s far more complex and musically interesting than your average pop or god forbid emo song…which generally restrict themselves to a sycopated 4/4 rythm, following the verse-chorus-verse-riff-chorus format of oo babies.now I think what this post is REALLY about itsn’t the musical value of rap or hip hop. it’s the fact that it’s an urban style, predominantly subculture or from financially-less-rosy groups. Yeah, a lot of the time it means black. (although not just black- ever heard of reggeton? it’s latin american rap/hip hop stuff, same thing but in spanish…actually it’s a lot of fun to dance to as well….). THAT’S what people are freaking out about, just like they always have when something a little unsettling invades middle class sububria. Until parents are willing to say THAT, the issue is moot- they’re not upset about their kid listening to rap, they’re upset about their kid being interested and exposed to something about drugs/sex/misogency/crime/scary scary blackness. Frankly though, I’d rather have a wigger for a child than someone emo…there’s less cuttin ginvolved.
love it or hate – to each his own. music is music shitty or good.the only thing that bothers me about “rap music” are the arseholes who drive around in their tricked out Honda Civics with the music fucking cranked so loud that everyone in the vicinity gets ear raped and lets the people a half mile down the road know that they’re next!quit it! you’re a fucking joke.
any music genre is music, and any music is art. if you dont like it, great for you, but dont impose your opinions on others.my parents didnt mind me listening to nu metal (korn, limp bizkit) when i was 15. they didnt mind me listening to black and death metal (satan’s blood, lapidate) when i was 17, they didnt mind me listening to harsh noise, grindcore, digital hardcore, and drone when i was 19 (nic endo, napalm death, atari teenage riot, and lustmord). and they sure as heck didnt mind when i got into early 80s hip hop (ie furious five).and i didnt turn out into a church burning vegan drug addicted gangsta. who wouldve guessed?what you listen to, reflects very little on who you are as a person.i know my kids will listen to whatever the hell they want to listen to. i refuse to be a censor.
I like Indian music!
I enjoy the fact that the Dixie Chicks have opinions. I hope they don’t change that part! And you should be happy too, maybe it’ll teach your child to think for themselves and not follow a trend.
the irony, if the people actually listened to the hip hop from artists such as Classified or J Bru, which both get national video play and tour the country, both make it a point to say they have nevre lived in the ghetto, they dont rap about the gold, matter of fact, i dont think they have any on in videos. Some simple minds at work in this thread. To think that rap is strictly what is on TV is to think that Bon Jovi and Nickleback are the definitions of rock
Hey Homie….J-Bru is my homie……Thought that way kinda funny! And Classified has some pretty great lyrics…..anyone who thinks hip hop is just beats should listen to some Classified…he could change some minds….I think!
we were hanging out last weekend…… man that cat is jokes. Going to ontario ……. end of the month i think. Should be jokes. Its funny when people bash other’s music. Its like bashing someone’s team. It just preferance
OH Lord…..Homie do I know you? I think J bru was in my neighbourhood last weekend drinkin with my bf! Too funny!
OMG!!! I was drinking with J-brew last wknd too. Maybe I am Lori’s BFF and Homie’s homie. Small fucking city! I love you both. Do you guys know J-Bizzy?
J-Bizzy is jokes. We had brew. It was jokes. Then we told jokes. About jokes. It was jokes.
Why do so many people “fear” something they don’t understand; it’s irrational. To say Rap is not music is a totally misinformed statement. It’s OK not to like something but to go on a tirade about the social merits of RAP when you truly have no clue what you’re talking about is socially retarded. It’s impossible to make blanket statements about an entire genre and come across as anything but an obtuse prude.People said the same thing 50 years ago about Elvis Presley and the music of that era … it was the Devil’s music. I listened to metal growing up and it was the same thing then.As always, it comes down to good parenting and being involved with what your kids are doing. Some of my favourite rap/hip hop artsits include Jurassic 5, The Roots and The Beastie Boys. Get this … they actually play their own instruments … mon dieu!
I think Classified is like the Old Slim Shady, before money and fame got to him. I hear similarities between their lyrics and beats. On the other hand I have no idea how people label hip hop and RnB as Rap, Hip hop and RnB are 2 completely different things, and both are no where near Rap. What impresses me the most is that people like Lil Wayne, Lil Jon, and even Soulja Boy are actually making money. I just don’t think it will ever get trashier, nastier, lower, dirtier than this. Best Rap I heard came out of Snoop and Dre. Biggy maybe, Puff Daddy. Most wouldn’t argue that one.
The way i look at it is.. Parents prob dont want their children listening to music about bitches, hoe’s, bling and the n word being thrown around where if you are listening to heavy metal or metal its more along the lines of being depresed
To all you fuckers who listen to rap, and think its the best shit out there, its fuckin garbage. no wonder people dont want their fuckin kids listening to it, its fuckin irritating, and the most people make it have an iq of less than that of a glass of water. to all you fuckers driving around town all night blasting your 500 dollar stereo in your 50, i mean fitty, dollar cars, why dont you crash and burn. rap isnt music, its FUCKIN SHIT. m/
Far be it for me to classify an entire music genre as shit. The crux is this… I’ve known many a songwriter (am a songwriter) and everybody writes in their own special way but I’ve seen it again and again: write the music, write the lyrics (or vice versa), rap it out all together to establish cadence, make your accommodating changes to both then polish the vocal melody. It seems (most) rap stops short of the final step. Rap seems like unfinished work and often it’s not very creative/savvy/interesting on the music side of things. As for crankin’ any music to unreasonable levels with car windows down… sure wish those peacocks would quietly fuck off.
Boring commercial rap acts such as Chingy Use No Talent.
