My roommate walked back from the Mosque during Ramadan prayers with his friend and were subjected to drunken taunts, racist slurs and people being genuine assholes. I thought on the night of the Pride Parade people in this city would actually be a little more accepting, but put alcohol in someone’s hands and the truth really does come out. Get over your racist bullshit, Halifax, and grow the fuck up, or you will never be respected as a city. My roommate’s idea of Canada grows darker and more apathetic by the day. I can only imagine how people overseas see us now. Thanks for being a shining example of the racism you pretend is only a problem down south. Fucking hypocrites. —Sorely Disappointed with My New City

  1. if hes that closed minded that the actions of a few=the actions of the many he should move to somewhere outside of canada. Im sure in whichever country hes from originally there aren’t a few racist idiots.

  2. i’ve lived all over the country and have seen and heard more bigoted behaviour here than anywhere else. just because it’s never been directed at you doesn’t make it any less of a reality

  3. Hey PG, we saw the Greyhounds in the parade! They were so cute, with little rainbow hula skirts on 🙂

  4. BAHAHAHA I love how calm they are. They’re all “doot doot doooooot, I’m a dooooog!”

    Such good pups!

  5. awwwwwwww sweet doggies! they are real couchies, aren’t they? ex racers? had enough roaring around.

  6. Sorry about what happened to your roommate and their friend. I hope they’ve had enough good experiences here that they haven’t given up on Canada yet. We can do better.

We want to end street harassment. We’re starting by tracking how often it happens in HRM and where. If your roommate (or anyone reading this) wants to add their experiences to our map, they can do so here:

Our site also has tips for responding to harassers. Some of them are geared specifically toward sexist harassment, but many of them will still be useful for responding to people who make racist comments and threats. We encourage your friend to keep safety as their first priority.

Please give our best to your roommate, and let them know we’ve got their back.

    Take care.

  7. You know what? I get so sick and tired of this crap. Taking an isolated incident by some dumbass redneck as a commercial of why “all Canadians” are racist douchebags. If we took a view of Middle Eastern people by a few radical wackadoos who flew some planes into a building in downtown NYC, we might view their culture as “unaccepting” of other cultures. But the majority realise that you can’t lump everyone together, RIGHT OB? Every culture has people who are less than hospitable when it comes to difference, but a distinct minority, and are usually an embarrassment to their respective cultures.

  8. Condemning a city on the actions of a few is almost as bad as the racism OP complains about.

  9. I’m sorry this happened to your friend OP 🙁 I get it from time to time (I’m a female Canadian convert to Islam)- tell your friends to chin up and try to stay positive 🙂

I like to think that people here are open minded- but there are the few who show their true colors when given the chance. Can’t judge a whole city by a few bad apples (or a whole country/religion/race etc), but you’re right- it does influence how others perceive us as a whole.

Tell your friends there are plenty of nice and accepting people here, and to keep smiling 🙂

  10. I don’t have kids yet but would not want them to attend a Gay Muslim Parade with the half-naked magic carpets!
