Recently, I have been receiving a lot of applications for some well-paying jobs in marketing and sales fields. Supposedly well-educated people have submitted AWFUL coverletters filled with typos, grammatical errors and, worst of all, “text-type”. Lower-case “i”‘s, “u” instead of “you”, and they seem to have no idea how to format a basic business letter to begin with!
Are universities just not teaching this? Do people seriously expect to be hired if they can’t write basic english (and these are local kids we’re talking about). WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM!?!? Put effort in if you want a job!

You know, some people who were lucky enough to have their parents pay their tution also happen to take pride in their education. They might take grammer and spelling seriously. Just because I didn’t have a student loan doesn’t mean I didn’t work just as hard as someone who did.

I call bullshit on that, Jennifer. You’re telling me that it wasn’t easier without working at a part time job and taking a full course load, and working full time in the summer in the hopes that you won’t have to declare bankruptcy in ten years? Piss off
Did I lose track of this bitch? It was about spelling errors, using poor grammar and putting text type in cover letters to possible employers. It wasn’t about Mommy and Daddy paying for school, or student loans, or part time jobs. People are too lazy to proofread or take the time to look up the proper spelling of words. If they don’t take pride in properly writing a simple cover letter, that speaks volumes about the pride they’ll take in their job…..if they can get an interview.
I agree Dave, the bitch was originally about spelling and grammar, which is one of my biggest pet peeves but now I’m pissed about the comments! Why do people want to shit on those students who have an education fund? I wish someone would’ve saved money for my education. (God knows I’ll be paying for a long, long time) I am now saving for my son’s education and I wouldn’t want you assholes to judge his character just because he has a Mommy who is smart enough to do so, something like Jennifer’s Mommy and Daddy! Jealousy will get you nowhere!!!!!!
If was a manager or boss I would not hire anyone using text “grammar” Your resume is suppose to be a refection on you! Your not talking to your friends your talking to your possible boss I wouldn’t expect a manager at a gas station to accept a resume with text grammar.
Zac, given your command of the English language, I don’t thing you are in any danger of finding yourself in a management position.
the second time through university I took an English degree for fun, for me. It’s paid off. I have developed habits of both writing in red, and correcting things…(the local rags over coffee for a start..) without thought. I own a networking firm in town. We are a small business and hire less than often, good emps are hard to find. solution: first spelling or formatting error is filed under G. The resume says a lot about a person and their background. If they cannot hit spell check that says something about both the person and their personal philosophy.No time invested, is no time wasted on my part. Call centers, couldn’t care less. And (hint, no sentence should ever begin with and.) call they are hiring like mad.

Well, half of all Canadian students, happy? I think it’s interesting to look at the graph and see how the number of Nova Scotian students is pretty static from year to year and the number from Onterrible increases every year. I’m no expert, but of this trend continues…
I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that it isn’t the International Student from Narobi getting pissed at the Split Crow and then puking up on Sue Uteck’s front lawn on sunday morning.
MATT– I have been out of school for a while, but really, now you are saying that all of the drinking students are doing it on their parents money????? ahahaha you must not have attended university at all, because if you did you would know that 90% of us get shit faced on whatever money we can get a hold of….It’s university…..hello? And I believe that’s not a new trend…..even the one’s from other countries get loaded once in a while…
