TO THE STUPID BASTARD ON THE CELL PHONE WHILE I WAS CROSSING THE CROSSWALK. I DON’T WANT TO LOSE MY LFE BECAUSE YOU ARE TO (IMPORTANT) TO WAIT TO TALK TO YOUR BUDDY WHEN YOU GET WHERE YOU ARE GOING

  1. Shouldn’t be walking into crosswalks when there’s oncoming traffic OP. Look both ways when crossing the street.

That said, people talking while driving is also a pet peeve of mine. Also texting while driving. And also texting while walking…

  2. Technically, it’s illegal to be talking on your cell phone while driving in Nova Scotia. Take down his plate number and/or take a photo and report him!

It’s not technically illegal, however, to eat a sandwich, do your make-up, or brush your teeth while driving.

  3. Well presumably the OP DIDN’T walk into the crosswalk when the car was coming – unless they are posting bitches from the hospital, Nevermind.

Pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks, but still looking both ways is common sense. Thanks for stating the obvious….

  4. maybe the OB had the walk signal and already entered the crosswalk… but had to ‘jump’ out of the way to avoid being hit by the negligent driver? that exact scenario has happened to me on more than one occassion.

in each case, i observed the driver was ‘busy’ with other activities… ‘driving while distracted’… and similar to drunk driving, the driver’s mind is somewhere else, other than the prime directive, if you will – the SAFE operation of their motor vehicle. a driver might be able to react quicker than if s/he were drunk i suppose, but even so, a distracted driver often doesn’t even SEE the person that they just ran over (in the crosswalk), so intoxicated or not, driver distraction kills people.

just DRIVE the car… and turn OFF the damn phone!

  5. Holy crap you should have seen what I saw Monday morning at a busy intersection. This chick was crossing on a red light, not yellow, the hand was a solid red and not blinking. She was yammering on her cell phone oblivious to cars coming toward her. The guy who had green driving inbound actually had to stop to let her go. She didn’t even acknowledge the car or anything. Didn’t change her pace or skip a word in the conversation. The driver honked his horn, no response, she just kept on going and didn’t even turn her head. Nice.

  6. @Cranky – aside from your moronic sarscasm, the *difference* here is that a negligent driver actually KILLS people, whereas a distracted pedestrian harms nobody but themselves.

i’d say the motorist has a greater responsibility to TAKE CARE while driving (NO distractions), because the consequences of their negligence is all too often deadly.

put it this way, i’d much rather get run over by a ‘walking’ pedestrian (even if she was gabbing like a fool on her mobile), than by a distracted driver in a ‘moving’ vehicle.

the greater onus is *always* on the driver, since they have the unique ability to run over/kill people – if they are not careful

  7. I don’t know about you, but I’d feel like shit if I killed some 22 year old girl crossing the street, accident or not. A distracted pedestrian does hurt someone other than themselves, in this situation.

Any sarcasm in my post is unintentional. I truly was flabbergasted by this persons total disregard for her safety.

  8. offending your sensibilities isn’t my aim, cranky, but i’ll see what i can do to be ‘nicer’… most especially to you, my sweet little Crankypoooh. cheers ;~}

  9. ah i get it… so i CAN be insulting, so long as i preface my remarks with the disclaimer, ‘no offence’, as you just did?

    look sweetpea, i’m not here to make ‘virtual’ friends or to win-over some bullshit artist who, quite rightly, calls himself ‘Cranky’. no offence, of course ;~}

i come here to bitch, that’s all.

  10. and btw, Cranky… i wouldn’t even attempt to ‘awaken’ you
i’d probably have better luck trying to wake the dead… no offence

  11. if they come close enough to you, give the door a good fucking kick. after the shock wears off them, look them dead in the eye, and tell them, that it will be their face next time. and then if they mouth off, deck them. case closed and you walk away. too many of these assholes are getting away with almost running us down daily. fight the fuck back. or you could even carry a few paint balls.

  12. A friend of mine did that once. He got stuck with 100’s of dollars worth of the autobody repair costs. Be warned.

  13. I hope some of these thoughtless, self-absorbed yakking/texting twits find themselves impaled on a fire hydrant one day. I can assure you I will do a little leprechaun dance around said hydrant.

  14. What amazes me is the whole attitude in society today that whatever the text/email/phone call is, it cannot wait for 5 minutes. You just NEED to respond to it RIGHT this minute or your whole world will come to an end. It is unfucking real.

  15. are you guys serious? People get so worked up over this since it has been made illegal. Before that law was passed no one would have cared if they saw a driver on the phone.
Before Law – no big deal
After Law – holy fuck theres a “STUPID BASTARD” on the phone driving out of control!!!!
I know, it’s illegal now… but lighten up. Just because I’m on the phone doesn’t mean my vision has suddenly gone.

  16. Remember the days when telephones were only available at home. Society seemed to manage just fine without being instantly available.

Last week I was confronted in a cross-walk by a cell-talking driver who failed to noticed the other traffic was stopped to allow me to cross while she drove right past me! Not walking before all traffic stops at the crosswalk is the only way I operate but what about those drivers who arrive at the crosswalk after everyone else has stopped and the pedestrian has begun to cross the road?

I know someone who was killed because the car behind the stopped driver changed lanes instead of stopping to get around the stopped vehicle only to hit the pedestrian in the crosswalk!

  17. @Pretty Sure – a driver is supposed to get behind the wheel of his/her car to ‘drive’ – with utmost diligence & safety – not to socialize and/or conduct business on the damn phone.

texting/talking while driving is dangerous, driver distraction kills people every day in this country, that’s an irrefutable fact. so what is it that you’re still not understanding about the law? your ‘vision’ is useless/irrelevant, after you’ve become distracted by a phone call or some other activity WHILE DRIVING. it takes mere seconds, if that, for some momentary distraction to potentially cause an accident or death.

you know what i don’t get? how many motorists seem to think that driving on our roads & highways is an inalienable right – it is NOT. a license to drive is *privilege*, granted to those who have demonstrated an ability to operate their vehicle in a SAFE manner – at all times, without exception, and no distractions.

until the day arrives when cars are able to drive themselves… motorists should stfu, get off the phone, and *focus* on THE primary task at hand – just DRIVE.

  18. Cranky, several times in the past month, I’ve encountered a similar situation to the one you described, pedestrians on cell phones oblivious to the fact that they’ve just stepped out into traffic. I agree, it’s not just drivers on cell phones that are an issue.

@ techcafe – I disagree with your insinuation that distracted pedestrians only put themselves at risk. If a driver has to swerve or slam on the brakes to avoid an oblivious pedestrian, he’s at risk of being rear-ended or causing a collision with another vehicle. Pedestrians have a responsibility for safety as well.

  19. @me0w – obviously, pedestrians ought to exercise care when crossing the streets (put the phone away, at least while crossing)… especially given that the pedestrian is likely to encounter a driver who is also distracted by his/her phone.

however, i reiterate, the greater onus/responsibility to drive with the utmost care is *always* with the motorist – for obvious reasons.

  20. techcafe, you have it out for drivers/cars in general, did the Michelin man touch you as a child or something??

  21. actually, it was I who groped the michelin man first, and he liked it… but i digress

btw, do you mind if we stay ON-TOPIC, ftc?
we could talk about ME, but let’s not, cuz that isn’t why we’re here.

  22. oh but i can multi-task…put on makeup, get a blow job or give one, eat, read, write, oh but wait i am driving a motor vehicle how hard can it be…i guess driving isn’t thrilling enough for most people…must do other things i am so busy and so very very important..must plug in the igod the bluetooth text my lame friends now i can’t hear either i am so fabulous

  23. i have a solution…next time this happens, copy down the plate number, phone the police and charge them…or,even better, put the plate number on the coast and embarass them publicly…this selfish behaviour must end before more innocent people are murdered by irresponsible drivers.

  24. Mentor says, “i have a solution…next time this happens, copy down the plate number, phone the police and charge them…”

that’s assuming the pedestrian hasn’t already been run over and killed… and i doubt that the police take such reports seriously anyway.

speaking for myself, i have reported negligent/dangerous drivers who have nearly run me down in the crosswalk, even gave the officer the license plate and description of the car… but i NEVER hear back from the cops, even though i was told that the driver would be contacted by police, and they’d get back to me. so ime, unless you’re laying in a pool of blood on the street, after being struck by a car, the cops ain’t gonna do fuck all to dangerous drivers.

  25. I am continually amazed at the Coast readership, and their seeming willingness to allow more and more gov’t intervention and police powers into our lives!

While no Guardian Weekly, my thoughts are that the Coast is a fairly “liberal” and “questioning of ‘authority'” type magazine…and yet, at least on this forum, I have read endless support for giving the RCMP the powers to close beaches, roads and parks at will…

….and now – just listen to the support on here to allow them to seize mobile communication devices (which they themselves use constantly, with NO extra training) willy-nilly when it suits them…Listen up folks…It’s just another “excuse” for pulling over young people and subjecting them to unreasonable searches etc.

Look, NONE of the knee-jerk “reasons” for banning the use of phones hold water. A conversation is “distracting”? Oh, really? How about banning my wife/mother-in-law from the passenger seat then, is that next? “No talking to driver” signs? Sound-proof plexi between the seats?!

The only difference between a phone conversation and one with a passenger…is that at least on the phone, one keeps an eye on the road! How many of us have driven with taxi-drivers/cops/relatives etc that talk while continually glancing over, or worse yet, twist around to face the back seat!

What gullible sheep we are to allow these ridiculous restrictions to our personal freedoms by the RCMP, under the thin disguise of “safety”…

Well I for one can see through the bad false moustache…it’s just another cash-cow and excuse for profiling and stopping drivers on a “fishing” expedition by the cops.

Bad drivers are bad drivers…whether they are distracted by a phone conversation, or turning around to check on little baby Theodore in the back seat.

In fact, do the research…driving deaths are DOWN in most of the western world.

Don’t ban phones..ban shitty drivers…do some actual police work you lazy pricks, and stop penalizing those of us that have used mobile phones, while driving, in our line of work – incident free since the ’80’s.

Blanket “bans” and “general restrictions” are unconstitutional and are like letting the RCMP wipe their arse with the Bill of Rights…

Less police powers, until they learn to enforce the laws we have…not more!

  26. Wow, frosty…paranoid much?

As for the difference between talking on the phone while driving and having another person in the vehicle, I believe in another similar post, the comment was made that at least having another PERSON in the vehicle with you gives you another set of eyes & ears (supposedly). And using a phone in the vehicle means one hand is occupied away from the wheel. And what do you do if you drop the phone? Lean over, impairing your vision, to pick it up? (Cue ‘what about smoking?’ ‘holding a coffee?’ ‘changing the music?’)

While I agree that a shitty driver is a shitty driver, talking on a phone while driving is irresponsible. What did people do before cell phones? They WAITED. Talking while driving is unnecessary.

  27. “” What did people do before cell phones?””
    ..
Ah yes, the good ole days where no-one ever had a car crash, and life was so much better on the highways, as drivers darted in and out of traffic, speeding to reach the nearest payphone or flooring it to not be late to a meeting (when a quick call could have sorted it!)…and wives and children sat at home wondering if papa was lying dead and broken at the bottom of a ditch, or was just running late in traffic?

“talking on a phone while driving is irresponsible”?? Clearly, you’ve swallowed the kool-aid, ma’am. “What happens if you drop the phone?”….is just silly…

FYI, even hands-free phones are being banned…what’s next…banning talking to yourself? Singing along with the radio?

Unbeleivable. The anti-phone fascists have launched the most successful propaganda campaign EVER, and just look (and listen) to you sheep swallowing it hook line and sinker!

“”extra pair of ears and eyes”?!

Good grief – I spit my (fair-trade) coffee into my laptop screen when I read that one!

  28. I never said that there were never car accidents or stupid drivers prior to cell phones. I’m just making the point that we’ve become dependent on these stupid little phones. And yes, I actually have one. I’ve also (rarely) used it when driving. Dropping a phone is silly? I’ve seen it happen! As a passenger in the vehicle. And my eyes & ears were on full alert as the driver stupidly took their eyes off the road to root around for it!

If you’re going to be late for a meeting, you were probably going to be late before getting in the car, so you could’ve called before leaving. There are options. A cell phone is not a necessity, though the industry has made it seem like we simply can’t live without them (sounds like YOU’VE swallowed their kool-aid, Sir). I’m glad it’s been made illegal to talk on a phone when driving.

  29. anyone who ‘thinks’ that being distracted WHILE driving isn’t downright stupid and dangerous, ie, talking/texting on a phone, applying makeup, adding sugar/cream to your coffee, whacking off… whatever) hasn’t been paying attention to accident statistics, which clearly show that inattentive/distracted drivers cause upwards of 80 percent of all accidents/deaths on our roads/highways… even the ‘good drivers’, mr frosty, get into accidents when they are not paying close enough attention to their DRIVING.

gheez, it’s a motor vehicle fer fuksake, not your friggin home or office, the phone calls and text messages can WAIT – but the person you just ran over (while you were busy gabbing on your phone) is now DEAD! get it??

  30. btw, mr frosty, your screed about eroding civil liberties was not lost on me… i too hate the tendency we now have to BAN BAN BAN everything.

    but that’s another discussion altogether

  31. I recently enjoyed a trip to europe. One of the most enjoyable aspects is that pedestrians wait for cars, crosswalk or otherwise. and guess what? no one gets killed (at least extremely rare) I know I know crosswalks, children blah blah blah. The fact is car vs human, car wins. Take some fucking resposibility for your lives and watch for cars. Not everyone is going to be as responsible as you would hope, its just a fact. When this happens to me, oh wait it doesnt because I pay attn myself rather than trusting others with my life… and yes if that means making all the cars wait untill they are stopped annoying them, too bad, its better than risking your life…
