Hey people in charge of the Public Gardens–open up! It’s warm. It’s April. There are flowers blooming and ducks quacking and sunny sun shining and I want to enjoy the park, ’cause, you know, it’s called the PUBLIC Gardens, not the Sometimes Public Gardens. Why don’t you open until May? Open the fuck up already so the public can enjoy the public gardens, and not just look at it through a locked gate.

they should just keep it open all year, I get that they prob lock it up in the winter to save money on maintenance, but just put up a warning sign or something..
I’d like to see it open all year too, however, it won’t be in my lifetime. It’s TRADITION to open it on Victoria day weekend you tools, oh, be we get to pick and choose which traditions we follow huh?

OF COURSE we get to pick and choose what traditions to follow. It’s called progress.
If you were just trying to show why it’s on Victoria Day versus a week earlier or later, then OK. …but against the point of some people wanting the fence open year-round, that was weak.
If they are public gardens, let’s have some public input once in a while (not relying on an ancient decisions forever). Then the winners can call the losers ‘you tools’.
I didn’t know that either…. course I lived close by and and have only ever been there once.

Okay then Dogma, then we should get rid of stupid traditions like not allowing buildings taller than the Citadel, or any number of stupid things that we do in this city. The Gardens, are in fact, not public. Technically speaking, they belonged to Queen Victoria (much like many things in Halifax that we call our own), then commissioned to the City of Halifax at the end of her reign/death. One can argue that it’s really not public as it was a gift, to do as the city of Halifax wishes. You just can’t open the bloody place during the winter… You can’t plow the pathways, as the machinery would damage the grass and pathways, so you would need to have people who would shovel the entirety by hand. Would you like to volunteer to do that?
we could open it in winter and get the cons from Dartmouth Pen to scrape the pathways, we electrify the fence to stop them escaping, and maybe fry a few unsuspecting tourists 🙂
Some people have no logic what-so-ever…It still amazes me how seldom people actual think.
I don’t see much point in opening the place in the winter, Dr Fever, unless you have snowshoes…or maybe a sled and an energetic dog (Hmm….). I would almost definitely be against having the public pay for snow removal.
I am just saying that ‘tradition’ as a blanket argument does not work. Please don’t make me have to give examples.
Also ‘public’, ‘gift’, and ‘as the city of Halifax wishes’ sound like pretty good reasons to get public opinion on this.
As for the citadel…I can see reasons why the maximum building height idea is a good one, but they do not include ‘because the ancients thought it was a good idea’.
I tried to get in on good friday, i was upset.
If it is open in the winter then it will ruin the paths, lawns, gardens, etc. Bad idea…
If you open it when the snow is gone then there will be no flowers… that sucks.
If you wait until may so that the city can get workers in to clean, landscape, etc then you have a beautiful park to walk through right away with flowers and ducks and swans.
I think what the city is doing now works the best.
There’s the misconception: They’re public in title only. My point is; tradition is a blanket argument used in this city frequently, and by both citizens and city hall. So it’s a valid point, regardless of how you feel.
I was told that the reason they don’t open the park earlier is because the ground is too soft and the tender shoots of plants are more vulnerable. Besides, some things are better in their proper season, no?
Who the hell wants to walk under bare trees? Besides Daisy Quackenbush says she’ll ankle bite all the meatbags who invade her patch and peck out their eyes for good measure. Don’t fuck with the duck.
So the fact that they use the argument frequently makes it a good one? You are trying to use tradition to defend tradition.
Circular logic aside…the point is debatable (that’s why we’re debating it), regardless of how you feel.
