I am a student. And I am from British Columbia. I came to Halifax 13 months ago with the promise of community, education and safety.
My qualm today is with the Halifax Police. The function of the police is to be a body which provides security and justice for the good of the whole- but it as time moves on the concept of justice has been replaced with unnecessary intervention and basic pettyness. I live in the student area around Dalhousie and live in good cooperation with the other students, families and businesses around us. As a student I find we do an excellent job of looking out for each others needs- weather a friend needs a shoulder to cry on, a buddy to bitch to or a helping hand home. The promise of such community and its realization is what brought me to halifax and will keep me for years to come. However, constant police harassment is not conducive to a functioning and healthy community. Except in specific, extenuating circumstances we are more than capable of taking care of each other. Police raids on humble home parties out of the blue, and harassment as I take a friend home is simply useless. The wild wave of Frosh week is over, and we no longer need an army of police to control an occasional friday night study break. The vast majority of students are not a threat or disturbance to the greater community, and need not to be treated as such. I propose stronger community ties and a system/ campaign of respect to combat such minor issues as noise, so that our excellent officers can combat crime more befitting of their qualifications.

Well, I call bs on you students. You arent the polite, eloquent, community seeking people you claim to be. Don’t try and paint yourselves with the same perfectly innocent brush if you dont want us painting you with the arrogant miscreant one. Seriously? Just deal with it. If the police were called, chances are you are in the wrong.
For a university student you should pay more attention in english class instead of partying and become familiar with the use of the words “weather and whether”, the do have different meanings….just saying!

I seriously doubt the cops who come into work Wednesday-Saturday at 7pm shift are all laughing at how many punk students they’re going to mess with that night. If anything, they’re probably dreading how many stupid, loud parties they have to respond to instead.
