Living where I do, it’s very common to see Military Police officers on patrol in their cars, which I think is great considering the recent spikes in violence in our city. However, Is it really necessary for them to hold nearly bi-weekly sticker check roadblocks? I understand it’s dangerous for uninspected and unsafe cars to be on the road, but don’t you think all that extra idling waiting for one’s turn just to be checked and waved through might not be in the best interest of the environment? And what really bothers me is the apparent importance placed on these sticker checks, when I’ve seen countless speeders race by the parked speeder-catcher, radar-clad police cars untouched! I’m tired of being stopped just to be given a smile and a wave on through; but I wouldn’t be as tired or annoyed with it if I felt like priority was placed in the proper area, like dangerous drivers!

  1. There was a road block yesterday near Shearwater, you might be talking of the same one/place, and I thought the same thing. With gas being so high, they decide to make people line up and idle for 5-10 minutes so they can check cars for stickers. Then they didn’t even check ours in the end, they just made us wait and then let a whole line of cars go through unchecked. I think I can see the ozone shinking from here, and completely in vain.

  2. Oh, they’re doing the roadblocks within their jurisdictions. They handle most of the policing in Shearwater and Eastern Passage. People are stupid knows, that’s my complaint too! go ahead and check stickers, but it shouldn’t be a bi-weekly thing. Catch some more speeders and dangerous drivers. Let me know you’re keeping the streets safe that way, and then I’ll understand the roadblocks a little more.

  3. I’d like to comment on an aspect of the OP regarding the stickers and car safety. If car safety is so important and the government truely cares about our well being, why is it mandatory to only get inspection in the atlantic provinces and not the rest of Canada? Why is it mandatory to inspect cars on a yearly basis, pay that $40 for no reason, and it’s not in the rest of the world? Are all cars in the rest of Canada or in the world unsafe? No. Simply we’re sooooo poor in NS that they have to find anyway to make money, including paying that inspection yearly and paying the some odd hundred dollars if you get caught without one at a road block that serves no purpose but waste tax money.

  4. I thought you were saying the purpose was to generate tax money. But maybe we are just being progressive with our inspection process and making our highways safer by ensuring vehicles on the road meet a minimum safety stanadard. Just because we do something different doesn’t mean we are doing it wrong….right Homie? 🙂

  5. I am fairly certain that Military Police do not have the jurisdiction to pull over cars unless they are on Government property. I am sure they could detain someone fleeing a crime or caught in the act of a crime but as for setting up road blocks on municipal roads…I would question the legality of that.

  6. I was going to comment on that as well, Military MP’S can hold you until RcMP or HRM Police arrive if they witnessed you breaking the law, but they don’t hold road blocks, it’s usually the RCMP or HFX Police that have those in place

  7. Well Miles living abroad and going to different places in Canada makes you questions the things we do in the maritimes. The maritimes are so regulated it’s beyond regulation. Is there really a need for all that? Honestly, if someone comes up to a road block and they have something to hide, they’ll avoid the road block. It happened to me. I had an expired inspection sticker, came across that same road block, which is always there actually, and i just turned around and took another route! It really serves no purpose. Wastes time more than anything.

  8. “Well Miles living abroad and going to different places in Canada makes you questions the things we do in the maritimes”dont tell them that here…… they know it all and the rest of the country is ALWAYS wrong

  9. I knew I could count on you Homie! Nova Soctians don’t think everyone else is wrong, nor do we think our ways are always the best. The sheer volume of bitching we do should clue you in to that. And I was actually being kind of sarcastic with my last post there. Jsut trying to offer the alternative to the government just trying to screw us.

  10. no matter how much i beat the horse miranda….. watch how much isnt getting done in this province.

  11. the people are nice, the view is amazing, my work is easy, my girlfriend is amazing, my life is different with the change in occupation and no one knows me here. This doesnt mean that i agree with the political structure of the province and the mentality of the people in terms of politics. I can disagree with one, but see the positives and benefits in spite of the differences.

  12. Miranda, I think the web nazi should give us a “No Homie allowed” post as well a a “bitch here” post. Whenever I come here to check the comments and see 18 of his profoundly wise, “what I’m saying is merely…”, I’m a one-man givin’, sacrificin’ MACHINE comments down the side, I automatically tune out and go somewhere else. In a few days he’s done more to ruin this site than all the months of Big G’s shenanigans. Not cool.

  13. odd, you were giving praise at first…. and i was getting some compliments in another thread. Awwwww, are you feeling threatened by someone that doesnt play the insult and back down game with you qwerty? Suck it up princess.

  14. People will always bitch about politics and you don’t have to dig all that deep to see the faults with any place, or person for that matter. At the end of the day, I go to sleep happy and proud to be a Nova Scotian.

  15. Have you ever compared a car that has been driven in NS for 5 years to one from BC? We have so much salt water and random weather out here that our cars rust out way faster than out west. So I can see the need to have them inspected for safety.

  16. that miles, is why i stay.the lack of progress is astounding, but it doesnt make them bad people. I like the people here, doesnt mean i have to agree with the political shit they speak…. its funny that qwerty and poop take it so personal that they need to make comments about a “homie free” thread. I dont take this that serious that i would be bothered enough to care about what an individual said about me or my beliefs. Its funny the “agree with us or go back to ontario” mentality. Good to see that this province is open to new ideas and change.

  17. Cab inspection in this city is lacking, many of them should be yanked off the road. I think the road blocks are inconvienient, but they are simple reminders of the rules that you need to be adhering to. It might not be you that needs the reminders, but the fact they wind up with numbers of seat belt infractions and this and that…… it shows that people do need reminders.

  18. So homie, remember how upset you got with the JW’s when they came into your home and disrespected you for your beliefs and the way you live your life and you got the impression these old ladies thought they were better than you and that pissed you off, cuz noone says those things to you in your home? I do. Has is occurred to you that constantly slagging and insulting maritimers for their political attidues when you are not from here might kinda be seen the same way? You come into our home and talk shit, acting like you are better than everyone and are curious why people are taking offence? You are a bright guy, you see this don’t you? I know, I know, the old ladies were talking stupid trash and opinions, and you are only stating facts.

  19. you are defining this province as your own? you own this province? This is your private property? I never said they couldnt speak that shit, just not on my personal land. A land to which i own. at last check, this is a public forum. So you can spare me the comparison.

  20. Again, i certainly welcome to comments and critiques of my posts. I am not going to suggest anyone be ignored or blocked or deleted from a website. That is ludicris to suggest it. If i were spamming, i could understand. There isnt any spamming going on. When you refer to this as your home, you should also be noted that many of the residents that agreed with me are also from this province. Now, unless you have some sorta thing where everyone must agree, i missed that sign on the way in. The old ladies are welcomed to thier opinion. I dont care if they preach that shit till they pass out all exhausted and shit, just not in my house.

  21. It is a public forum so you can say whatever the hell you want, I won’t tell you otherwise. But the comparison is fair. You got testy when those two ladies implied they were better than you because you didn’t believe the things they were saying. People here are getting testy because they don’t believe the things you are saying and believe you are implying that you think you are better than they are. I don’t own the province, but it is the home to maritimers, people, by your words, you do not seem to want to associate yourself with. You don’t say “we need to do something about our political system” you say “you need to do this”, “you should be doing that”. That’s a little insulting, kinda like when some lady walks into your home and says “You should believe this”.

  22. Again, I am not personally saying to ban you. I am just asking you to acknowledge that it’s kind of insulting to be constantly ragging on us for the political climate. Do you talk to nova scotians? All we do is bitch about politics here. As you pointed out, a lot of the people who agree with you are from here. So why keep insisting that all haligonians are blind to the problems of this place? We are not. We have our vote, we vote, we complain. Repeat. That’s politics. Some political decisions make people happy, others make people pissed off, and most people just can’t be bothered to care. So please, stop over-simplifying a complex issue like politics and stop lumping all nova scotians into the same category. It’s insulting.

  23. again, if you think the maritimes is personal property, go ahead….. now by suggesting that i should say, “you need to do…..”, have you not taken that i really dont actually tell you what to do in response to the actual problem discussed? I dont tell or inform people on how they should act in terms of the topic at hand. More, i merely suggest to look at how others have handled the same or similar situations.I never did say if i would want the games, i am saying that others have managed and done quite well. This town shot it down without looking elsewhere WITH AN OPEN MIND. Look at the article tim wrote and the link i was directed to yesterday. Do not think for a second i dont understand the negative impacts of the games. Did you hear very much positive? on many topics here that relate to politics, i listen to idea after idea get shot down by you so called experts, ideas that are trying to prevent problems and aging of the infrastructure, but i keep asking the same questions i ask you….. AND YOU still havent given, if you dont like the idea of the games, and this and that…………what is your suggestion to getting it done for cheaper? At this point, most of you turn the conversation into a “just shut up homie”. Try answering it, the shit around you is aging and not getting any better. The track record for this city (and province) for getting shit done is INCREDIBLY slow. If any of you have suggestions or answers PEEP up….. so far you have complained about my posts, try answering the fuckin questions. Post the alternatives

  24. Amen Miles. But you know he’s right about everything, and in a few minutes he’ll remind us all about that again. *waits*

  25. Homie, perhaps the other posters on this board would pay closer attention to what you have to say if you didn’t act like an authority on EVERYTHING.Most people who post on this board pick and choose the threads they reply to, because obviously no one’s an expert on everything. You, on the other hand, seem to feel the need to share your opinions on absolutely everything. People get tired of hearing from you, and begin to glaze over your opinions.

  26. if you are insulted and you know the problems…… do something about it. If you are from here, then you notice the mentality of the city. I have given you SPECIFIC examples within this group. Take the Bedford Highway situation. That has needed to be addressed for MANY MANY years. Has it? No. Why? Too much bitching and talking, little to no action. A crosswalk for Mt A students across that highway……. how many more kids need to be nearly smoked? It is funny that people hate to hear about things, but arent denying it is the truth. I understand you might hate hearing it. I feel for you. I guess i could take the negative comments from the likes of poop and others and get tired of hearing it. However, i acknowledge that i might be annoying. However annoying, it doesnt make what i have said, any less true.

  27. At this point, I don’t give a flying fuck where you’re from, what you’re saying or what you think. I’m saying that seeing the recent comments polluted with your posts upon posts, as soon as I see your name, I check out. I don’t read them. I find them smug and boring and really, really repetitive. That’s all. And I wish we could have a place free of you in here. I know it won’t happen, but you never know.

  28. of the threads on the first three pages…. i have actively participated in 3 threads. The rest, i tossed in a comment and fucked off, no more than the others here. Again, i hardly care if people are offended by the fact i dont agree with them. If people did more research about the shit they give opinions on, you wouldnt see as much shit here as you do. Take the bus thing and how EX haligonian is the expert. I never claimed to know shit and even made a comment to learning something. It is as though you people are threatened that someone researches what they say before they say it.

  29. Maybe it’s the condescending attitude that’s apparent in most of your posts that puts people on the offensive.

  30. hey, qwetry, cover your ears and say, “la la la IM NOT LISTENING TO YOU”its funny, you find it repetitve, but you are also one of the ones that will state an opinion, and get pissy if it gets challenged with fact. You do not answer to any questions, its as though you can post something, and cant be called on it.

  31. yes, its condesending to watch the same regulars around here take pot shots at anyone around here that makes a post or what not…. got it. Sorta funny when the regulars around here are called on a point with fact and done without name calling. The little clique around here seems preoccupied with being right or wrong on thier opinion and feel they done have to justify it or back it up…..

  32. Then what about this board appeals to you? Why not find a board with more “enlightened” posters?

  33. Why do you keep retreating to your main talking points when someone calls you on something else? This was not about your opinion/facts about the games, this is about why people are upset with your comments.Again, I have not said Nova Scotia is my personal property. But it is my home. It is home to about a million people who you have repeatedly labeled as politically incompetent. If we were all the same we surely would not have political problems because we would all be in agreement all the time. This board is clear evidence of how diverse we actually are. If you also call this place home, then our political problems are also your political problems, so stop telling “us” how messed up “we” are, because you are now part of the problem too.

  34. correction miles…. you havent been called imcompatent. I have merely said that all your bickering is preventing shit from getting done. I havent said they have done anything wrong. If i am part of the problem, then you dont see what the problem is…. so many non politicians here block up the work they try to do, nothing gets done. No one is going please an entire society. However, if we all continue to bitch, nothing will get done. What is the point of voting in people if we negate all the actions of the people we voted in? I know they make mistakes. Ones we all pay for. They also do things that some are going to call a mistake but benefit some one else, that is ALSO A SCOTIAN. All this bickering and stonewalling by the non experts like myself and tim and most of us here, is why things are slipping behind. Ask yourself this, how many years have you heard them talk about how they are going to fix, repair, or demolish Cogswell? That is just one example of all the talking and no action. I respect all the opinions here and havent said anyone is wrong for having them. However if you look back at what i am saying…… you will see the actions of those that know better are emulated by thems in city hall (special interst groups, heritage groups and others) that feel they have to have thier say and they present these one sided arguements that dont take into consideration others and other factors….. we have this stonewalling that goes on here.

  35. Does anyone else believe that Nova Scotia is actually a great place to live? That we have an excellent quality of life? That we live in a very scenic part of the country with a vibrant arts community and a lot of culture and history?Yes, we have problems. So does Toronto. So does Calgary. So does Vancouver. So does Montreal. And in any of those cities you will have people who try to take action, and those who prefer to whine and bitch. You have politicians who are trying to better the city, and those who just want an easy ride and a fat pension. These phenomenons are certainly not unique to Nova Scotia, or Halifax.People get frustrated when they are constantly reminded of the negative, and never the positive.

  36. Yes Bert, I did. Thank you for making that correction.(I realize this stems from my views on another thread, but did you happen to read the part of my post where I stated I appreciate and value good grammar and spelling, yet realize I too make mistakes? And the part that stated I don’t feel the need to point out every time someone makes a mistake?)

  37. Sorry to have annoyed you, Someone Who Actually Work. I thought, since newsgal was so intolerant of others’ tiny mistakes in the past, she might appreciate her own being pointed out to her.She did muddy up what could have been a very interesting thread on the subject of literacy, with her frequent nitpicking. “Turnabout is fair play,” as the old saying goes?

  38. “People get frustrated when they are constantly reminded of the negative, and never the positive”that is what happens when everything gets shot down because someone else knows better and is right. Other cities do have problems. Many that could simply be solved at looking at how others solve things. I posted a link to London ontario. It is similar to here and was i just as much debt as here. Shit was crumbling, infrastructur sucks. They now have a surplus. I am not saying to copy exactly what to do, but it only makes sense to see how others have managed.

  39. Bert – 1. I don’t point out mistakes made by others. All I did was participate in a thread about grammar and spelling.2. That thread was never about literacy. Go back and read the original post. The person who wrote it was complaining that people don’t seem to know when you use they’re or their.

  40. newsgal, I was just funnin’ with you. You are much too defensive. And that thread was evolving into a dialogue about literacy, as several of its posts reveal.

  41. Homie, I think I understand the spirit of your post. And, no, her comments have the same merit, with or without the minor technical glitches. (You believe this too, if I understand you?)

  42. I don’t think she appreciates that kind of speaking/typing guys…ex.”bustin your chops, funnin’ with you”. She made that pretty clear….what is wrong with u guys? Are you too stupid to add the ‘g’ at the end of the word? She would never have a beer with the likes of you two.

  43. Oh and, Someone Who Actually Work, she did say she makes mistakes, but she also said she NEVER surrounds herself with anyone who curses or uses slang, so if you want to defend her you might want to read up on the kind of person she is and also add an ‘s’ to the end of your name.

  44. Wow. I didn’t realize that by expressing my opinions on a particular topic I was setting myself up to be ridiculed on this site. I’d just like to point out that while I may hold views that aren’t always popular, I don’t resort to name-calling or personal attacks because I disagree with someone. I think it’s unnecessary. All I do is state my views, and give the reasons for them.I’ve never nit-picked people’s spelling or grammar on this site. As I said earlier, all I did was participate in a discussion about something that interests me. However if all my posts are going to be mocked or ridiculed, perhaps it’s time for me to move on. I’m not going to pull a Homie/Ginger and stick around long after many people have made it clear they’re not wanted…

  45. Newsgirl, fuck that, stick around. I am just joking with ya, I see your point, while i dont agree with you, dont let the actions of the hecklers deter you to not post your point anymore. Stick to your guns. This is a subjective topic and if people are going to get so hellbent they have to insult you based on an opinion, then that shows what kinda person they are. Its differnt if it is a factual thing. This is your opinion. Its like if a band is good or not, you cant argue that shit….. stick to your fuckin guns

  46. lori I’m reading up on the kindof person you are and you sound like a major bitch/

  47. i like lori. She is the “yeah did you think of that !!!!” girl.awesome. I wouldnt go as far as bitch however.

  48. Someone who actually work….I sound like a major bitch??? Here? In the “bitch” section of the coast??? Well I’ll just pat myself on the back….thanks!
