Congrats. You held a protest demanding the Canadian Government spend millions and assist in helping and saving your fellow comrads in some far off country that is having a problem with their current leader. Unless you didn’t notice, this is Canada. Canadians pay taxes to the our government to improve the lives of Canadians, to pay for health care for Canadians, to provide social programs for Canadians, and much more for Canadians. No where does it say our government must spend money on your comrads. I’d rather see this money spent on helping Canadians who need the help, those with children, the homeless, the sick, those living below the poverty line, and such. I don’t recall hearing of your country providing financial assistance to these Canadians who can use the help. So your protest is going to fall on deaf ears and I’ll turn my head and ignore you. You moved to this country, you didn’t bring your country to Canada. If you want to provide support for your comrads, head to your local bank and send a wire transfer, or hop on a plane back to help. —ProtestAgainstProtests

  1. Have you ever tried to wire money to comrades in Lybia? Not as easy as it sounds. I’m almost certainly on a number of lists now, and if I’m not then somebody isn’t doing their job.

  2. This is certianly not a black and white situation, but I believe in supporting other countries, when the help is asked for.

    This costs money.

  3. Hey OP Canada also spends tax dollars on humanitarian efforts. Meeting international obligations, including assistance with humanitarian efforts such as the Libyan crisis, qualify for tax dollars.

  4. well, if they didn’t spend it there, it would have gone for something stupid, like that war of that asshole bush.

  5. I was thinking of this last night, i wanted to go out and have a protest against protests by protesting, but i would be against my own protest and i thought ah hell fuck it.

  6. Last time I checked we were all Human, unless something changed very recently… Why all the Nationalism? I don’t see how leaving them to fend for themselves would help the world as a whole, and which we are part of.

  7. -waits for someone with a political science degree to bash my use of the word “Nationalism”-

  8. Isolationism might be a better term in this case. It is exciting to watch folks in this part of the world demanding greater rather than lesser freedom. Demanding an improvement to their own nations rather than the extinction of someone else’s.

  9. OB, I am 1000% on your side.
If Canada didn’t have homeless people, a medical system on life support itself. If taxes weren’t through the roof & every level of Government spending like a drunken sailor & using credit to do so. I’d be much more inclined to support other countries. But I believe that taking care of ourselves FIRST, is the most important job any Government can do.
After all when we can’t do that, how much longer will it be, before we can’t help anyone at all !

  10. I think most of the people protesting want to spread awareness of the impending genocide and mass graves that as usual, the UN will do jack shit about until it’s too late.

  11. I agree, sodeypop.
I have absolutely nothing against these protesters and really can’t blame them for doing what they can to raise awareness of what’s going on in Libya.

And for those of you against the protests – do you really think that what is going on in Libya has nothing to do with us or our standard of living here? Please. We’re all connected; it’s called globalization.

And as far as the whole, “We should look after ourselves here first” argument – we will never have a perfect society. Ever. So it’s not like just because we offer support to less fortunate individuals who had the bad luck (yes, luck) to be born in such terrible circumstances we’ve abandoned our own.

There will always be people to support and mouths to feed here at home. Just because that’s true doesn’t mean we need to leave the rest of the world to rot.

  12. The only things the UN is good at are forming committees and counting the bodies. Waste of good real estate…

  13. So OB, the next time your other half starts beating the shit out of you, we’ll all stand around and say “Fuck it, I have to take care of my own so too fucking bad for you”. I think we did that before WWII. Had the world intervened earlier maybe the holocaust and WWII would not have occurred.

I have a secret for you – Utopia doesn’t and cannot exist.

  14. “If Canada didn’t have homeless people, a medical system on life support itself. If taxes weren’t through the roof & every level of Government spending like a drunken sailor & using credit to do so” … YEAH ok then. Like things are so fucking tough in Canada …

This, this is why people hate the Western world.

  15. Donk, don’t get it; you say because we fucked our own economy and let politicians fuck it even more we are hated by Non-Western World populations cuz we won’t help?

…If so, then who needs those types of friends. I for one, don’t think the country is as well-off as Harper and HIS government want us to think.

  16. I believe you’ll find that people hate the western world , more because of Colonialism, & of course the USA (and their allies). going into nations for any trumped up reason they can, although You may have noticed the US, isn’t in Somalia (there’s no vast resources or oil there) or many other places where armed conflict & extremeists are fighting/raping/killing people.
