Come on… give a dog a break. He is loved and cherished by several people. A cuddler to all, and entertainer of many, a loyal companion… the sweetest dog I’ve ever known. He loves going for drives, swims, walks at the park and sticks. He and I know we’re now on a regular schedule… and I cherish him even though he’s not mine. Please just enjoy his enthusiasm, recognize my love for him and move on. I think he knew what you were saying, he seemed sad on the drive home….

A dog is a wonderful companion. There is nothing quite like the unconditional love and understanding their beautiful, loyal doggy hearts offer to their human friends and family. The person at the park sounds like an asshole, the dog probably seemed down on the way home because he sensed how upset you were over the whole incident. If it ever happens again just cheerfully smile, tell the person that the dog may be a bit overweight but that their personality sucks and that they’re a jerk and happily mosey along. Don’t let the assholes grind you down and don’t waste your time being pleasant and polite to someone who obviously does not deserve it.
Was it an insult or was it someone retraining themselves from saying WTF are you feeding your dog? In my own experience, if you’re not willing to go the extra money required for a premium food (perhaps a reducing formula) you’re likely to end up with a fat, dead dog or, worse, a very-sick-long-before-he-dies-expensive-ordeal dog.
No people food (ever!), a suitable diet, exercise and yes, you got it, love for your canine friend to live a long and happy life.
Some breeds can be chubbier than others. Take Huskies for instance, they’re chubby because they’re bred to be (cold weather). If your dog is of a breed that has issues of being overweight by breed, then don’t worry so much. If the dog is overweight now and it’s like one of those useless toy breeds, well, you need to get him better food (kay’s right, ugh, I said it, don’t buy shitty food) and get it out for walks more often. No dog deserves to be taken care of improperly. We do it to ourselves enough.
Regardless of the breed, all dogs (within breed guidelines) have an optimum weight range. Weigh your dog at the vet and get some advice on where it should be and then take the appropriate measures (low fat diet for a bit should be all it needs). If you aren’t willing to do this for your pet, fuck off, you don’t deserve it and it doesn’t need you.

Yeah the guys is an idiot but guess what? Go to the vet and he’d probably tell you the same thing if it is that obvious. Except it would probably cost you 80 bucks. I agree with Kay but I don’t agree about the no human food. As long as the owner is eating decent food. Fresh vegetables and meat without the bone, fat and skin shouldn’t be a problem. My dog eats apples, great for her teeth. Yellow lab has had both human and high quality dog food all her life will be twelve next month and has no joint issues…yet and has never had a weight problem.

Try the raw meat and bone diet for him if it bothers you so much when people suggest that your dog is a fattie… I think that if he’s happy, then you should maybe relax a bit, eh? He’s a fucking DOG. If the dog was loved, he would likely be taken on more walks and fed healthy. I look at fat dogs and fat kids all the same. They’re not disliked, they’re just the victims of poor parenting and often laziness. Don’t take it as an insult. If you goto Asia, the locals will point out saying “your arms are hairly”, “you are tall”, or “you are fat”. Its not an insult, its an observation.
The truth is often scandalous. The OP is pissed because he took it personally. And so he should, it is a reflection of his own laziness and lack of interest in properly caring for his K9. Shit look at all the unhealthy overweight humans out there. The world is full of disinterested people. This is why I believe that we need to ban shit like Alpo, cigarettes and transfats. Many of us humans, when left to our own devices, will self destruct taking our pets and the environment with us. It is those that take interest in things that our dangerous to our health, environment etc. who I trust to make decisions like that. It’s been going on for years already. I’ve seen doctors lecture people who still smoke and have heart disease but they would never use that same tone on them about their weight which is just as much a risk factor. We are so afraid to address the weight issue here. Most of us see the obvious, some of us take the time to state it in a way that can be helpful. Many of the bitchers here, including myself at times, just don’t want to take the time to sugar coat the truth. If we can stay open minded here and not get all defensive, there is a shit load of great advice on here!

#@%$ I’ve seen fat people who eat better than thin people. Sometimes it’s not as easy as putting down the fork.
As for fat animals? I get told my cat is fat all the time. He’s a big guy, but the vet says he’s very lean. Tell them to mind their own business. They sure as hell wouldn’t go up to some random fat person and tell them they’re fat three times, would they?
I think it’s rather cruel to over feed your animals! Forcing them to be fat? He might not know it, but dogs are in my opinion, one of the more athletic animals out there.
So to doom him to chubbiness is terrible….
