I agree with you in principle, Swamp Donkey, but if the previous century is anything to go by, those who sought to remake the world by secular means racked up a very impressive body count as well. I’m certainly not defending religion by any means, just pointing out that it was those socio-political movements which rejected, or more accurately, supplanted the power of organized religion that made the 20th Century one of the bloodiest in recorded human history.

The answers to our woes may be quite counterintuitive. Should we be slashing funding to medical research, enforcing a cap on the number of children per family, offer financial intentives for young men and women to sterilize themselves? China has already flirted with the one child per household concept with some disastrous consequences in a misogynist society.
I understand your angst OP. Humans are a predatory species and will exploit what it can for sustenance, profit, fun etc. We as individuals are great, as a whole though, we’re a blight.

THE PROBLEM OF EVIL
What the poster is talking about, of course, is the problem of evil but her conception of the human condition, one in which the existence of evil does not occur, is flawed. Let me explain.
Her view of the evil-free human condition corresponds to the Biblical allegory of the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were at one with their environment, the Garden, and with each other. They toiled not, neither did they care. Their Edenic or pre-lapsarian existence was one of bliss. However, wouldn’t you know it, the Serpent entered the Garden and offered Eve the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. She tasted it, thought it was nice, and offered it to Adam who also tasted it and approved. The result was catastrophic. They were banished from the Garden of Eden. They hid their nakedness in shame and took on a life of toil and care. What had happened?
Adam and Eve had, by eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, acquired self-consciousness, a reflective awareness of themselves as individuals estranged from their environment and each other. They had becomne autonomous beings. With self-awareness, however, came the simultaneous awareness of others as being “Other.” Concurrently, they became aware of seeing themselves in the eye of the Other. In objectifying others they too had become objectified. This is the begining of the problem of evil – the objectification of oneself and of the Other. Think of the seven deadly sins. Envy, greed, lust, anger and so on are all the outcome of the objectification of the Other. In other words, the Other came to be seen as a means, something to be manipulated. to obtain one’s own goals. This is the principle of evil.
However, as Aristotle once said, man is a political animal. This does not mean that he is a member of a political party but rather that he, of necessity, is a social animal. Without the society of his fellow humans, life is without meaning. At a minimnum man must co-operate with the Other and even be in amicable relations with him. Indeed, he may even seek the good of the Other as he seeks his own. This is the principle of goodness.
So the poster’s view of man is flawed. There will never again come a time when all the evils of the world will be gone, the slate erased clean. Rather, man is the site of continuing conflict between the principle of evil and the principle of good. Sometimes the one is in the ascendant, sometimes the other. It is a continuing story without a final resolution. There is no returning to the pre-lapsarian state of Edenic bliss Adam and Eve enjoyed in the Garden of Eden.

Well the Communist countries have proven that secular states are no better than religious states where it comes to violence and killing their own. The states that seem to do the best are those that combine the two (Canada, US, UK, the rest of the Western states, India, Japan and others, though none are perfect). As for aliens to come to our rescue, what makes you think they would be beneolvent and not enslave us and rape our world worse than we are? The whole Adam and Eve tale has some holes in it from my perspective. Okay God makes this paradise and all the plants and animals in it and he is looking for somebody to tend it. So he forms Adam from dust to manage this vast Garden. Except Adam hasn’t gained knowledge yet so that that hardly makes him supervisory material. Now God feels Adam will need a mate and proceeds to line Adam up with various species of animal only to find none are suitable. Now, presumably God made mates for all of these animals so why not stick to the same game plan for Adam? Anyway he pulls a rib from Adam and creates Eve. It’s unclear whether God took the same strategy with other female species. He also tells the pair to stay away from a certain tree.
So Adam and Eve are one with the forest frolicking nude and being ever so happy. That is until a serpent comes up to Eve and says “Pssst! Those apples over there in that big tree, they contain knowledge.” and then “You didn’t hear it from me but start munching on those and you’ll become much more like God.” Huge problem here as a) serpents are entirely carnivores and wouldn’t have an inkling to sample an apple and b) How did the reptile find this out? Obviously God let it slip or some other creature gained knowledge and told the serpent.
Meaning of course Adam and Eve weren’t the first to gain knowledge. If the serpent didn’t have knowledge, he had knowledge of knowledge.
Anyway Eve samples the fruit, gives some to Adam and they both become aware. Aware that they are naked. Modesty prevails and they don fig leaves. So why the modesty? Nothing else is wearing clothes. It doesn’t make sense. God notices the fig leaves and demands answers. The finger pointing starts, Eve blames the serpent and Adam blames God. So God in his fairly questionable wisdom strips the serpent of his legs and makes him a snake and kicks Adam and Eve out of the forest. Oh yeah, he takes one last shot at Eve by making all women bear pain during childbirth. Sins of the mother I guess. Just petty vengefulness to me. Plus God puts two cherubs with flaming swords by the Tree of Knowledge to guard it but I think that part is made up.
Adam, the one who blamed God seemed to get off lightly. Probably because he was right, it was all God’s fault. You go through all the trouble to create a paradise only to put a tree in there that is really nothing but trouble. Leave the fucking tree out! Let paradise be!
Then when one of your own creations no less samples the fruit of the tree, you kick them out. So you create temptation and punish those who are tempted by the temptation. Pretty perverse.
All in all, God really comes off as the bad guy in this tale although I don`t believe that was it`s intent. It boiled down to two critical errors a) the tree was pointless and b) don`t make the reptiles so damned smart.
The Simpsons nailed the whole Adam and Eve fable.

more, i read a book quite awhile back dealing with the fake person known as jesus. in the book there was an alluded point, that jesus was only a shill, and the real miracle worker, was actually a sister, named lael. now i know that there are many ideas as to who or what this man was. he was an actual person, founded by scientific fact, that lived a long time ago. there is also a belief that this bible book was not as old as people are led to believe, and that no, it was written by one man, not many as the church would have you to believe.
there is also an unfounded bit about that this jesus was a fakir, you know, a magician of sorts and a lot of the stuff that was sposed to be done by miracles, were nothing but smoke and mirrors of the day. i like to think that idf there was such a supreme being, that the shit that happens daily in our world, would stop just like that.

THE PROBLEM OF EVIL (II): NOT “OUT THERE” BUT “IN HERE”
Maybe it was my fault for not making myself clearer in my original “The Problem of Evil” (09/01, 8:39AM) but everyone seemed to think it was about religion or God and took up a position for or against. But my post had nothing to do with either. In any case, whether the commenter was for or against the existence of God or the role of religion, there was clear common ground. Both sides placed the existence of evil “out there” and not, as I thought I had make clear, “in here.” To take two extremes for illustrative purposes, let’s briefly look at troondon formosus (09/01, 7:08PM) and wogdog (09/03, 5:37AM).
Troon writes, “The whole Adam and Eve tale has some holes in it from my perspective.” When I wrote about the Garden of Eden allegory I thought I had made it clear that, for me, it was just that, an allegory. It put the origins of evil “out there,” in the fall of man from a golden age of blissful innocence in the Garden of Eden. Some commenters seemed to think I actually believed in the literal truth of the allegory, one of whom seemed to be Troon. But to say that there are “some holes in the tale” is the equivalent, to me, of saying that there are some holes in the Cinderella story. The comment, from my perspective, is both irrelevant and absurd.
Wogdog, the site’s “true believer,” comes right out with it when he writes, “There is EVIL in the world as well as good.” For me this is incoherent. Wogdog seems to think that evil is some sort of free-standing object in the world that exists out there like a tree or a cloud. That is incoherent. Evil, rather, is the quality which characterizes the morality of those who perform immoral, i.e., evil acts. Natural disasters, floods, earthquakes, etc. are not evil since they lack this essential moral quality. But man can do evil even if he thinks he is doing good. No man, as the saying goes, knowingly does evil but Hitler, for example, while he might have thought he was doing good was, in fact, doing evil.
The suprise, at least for me, was the strength of the hold of religion and God, one way or the other, which continued its grip on the commenters’ minds. So, if nothing else, I hope that this post has clarified my position.

Just to play “devil’s advocate lol” here let’s say God created everything. Now he she it or whatever has brought you into existence without any prior contract or agreement. This means God HAS to give you the choice,(you have been thrown into this whole life thing) ie a place where you can go and do whatever you want. This is the hell from the old testament. No turning to God means your own eventual self toment.
Placing this aside just imagine if God created the angel Lucifer, requiring that since no prior contract could have been signed before bringing Lucifer into existence he too must be given the choice to ultimately do whatever he wants.
NOW LUCIFER DECIDES TO GO DOWN FROM HEAVEN AND CREATE HELL BECAUSE HE HATES many of us and thinks we should pay for what we have done.
