I seem to recall a story in the local media this week where women were entering a contest where a man was the prize. Don’t recall any outrage, protests or parliamentary brew haha. Why is that?
It was a major topic of conversation at the Progress Club’s annual Bachelor Auction this week. It cast a pall over what should have been a lighthearted affair.
Where is the Qontest offering women a chance to win a date with a sexy Euro-male? Offering an international dating op to MALE listeners ONLY? Now THAT’S sexist! (Don’t even get me started on the hetero-only exclusion, although with acknowledgement to the gender preferences of the previous Qontest’s winners).

I voted for Meagan Leslie, and am very happy I did. I am a woman working in the non-profit sector with marginalized women and children. I applaud Ms. Leslie for her comments condemning this contest. Quite simply, it promotes the idea that it is acceptable to traffic women. That’s what the mail-order bride industry is. Sexual exploitation of women in any form contributes to the overall social epidemic of violence against women. It’s not funny. It’s not sexy. It’s not exotic. I am ecstatic that there is someone in Ottawa paying attention. Thank you, Ms. Leslie!

Megan Leslie is absolutely useless. She doesn’t even know who her colleagues are and has done nothing for her riding. This contest is no different than “The Bachelor” or going on a dating site, or anything else. The only thing it does is get Megan in the paper showing how useless she is to her constituents.
Wonder why Megan forgot to mention those fair Russian maidens who advertise themselves in Canadian newspapers as very open to the idea of becoming new Canadian brides, and once in Canada and safely married to some Canadian sucker promptly disappear! the mail order bride is actually a immigration scam and the victims are Canadian men not women!!

Historically, mail-order brides are single women from impoverished situations looking for a better life in a foreign country. Depending on the broker, it can be everything from a scam to bilk gullible men to a human trafficking ring.
I agree somewhat with the OP, that it’s a joke and that Ms. Leslie should keep her focus on bigger things.
