To the Asian family in the 8 items or less aisle at the grocery store yesterday, is 8 items or LESS really that hard to understand? You had at least 40 items leaving all the folks behind you shaking their heads in disgust. Playing the language card is no excuse, just look at the people around you with their 8 ITEMS OR LESS, not that fucking hard to understand. What pissed me off even more is the teller told the Caucasian woman behind me with 10 items to go to another line. Do the rules only apply to Caucasians? Are we that afraid to offend? By the way you sure as fuck knew what I was saying outside the store when I told you that what you did was very rude. Nattering back at me in Chinese doesn’t disguise the fact I heard you speaking English in the line. Playing the race card to fucking cheat is bullshit no matter how you slice it! Assholes! —Master of Shame

1. They were buying stuff to make the Dim Sum, and had to have it prepared and ready to serve, with a cut off of 3 p.m.

2. BAZ BEAT ME TO IT. FUCKER.

See this is the way it works. As long as you don’t have your shit on the belt the cashier can tell you to piss off to another line. If you have your items on the belt they can’t tell you shit.

Now, some cashiers are new on the job and try to be nice and don’t consider the comfort of their other customers and won’t say anything regardless. Some cashiers aren’t so new on the job and don’t give two shits about their job (indifference — it happens to all of us behind a cash eventually) and will let anything through those lines. Then you got either the angry bitter cashiers who’ve been there since the time of Jesus and’ll yell at yo’ ass to get to another line OR you get jerkwads who think they’re the shit and will be all “I’M MS/MR RULES ENFORCER!” and will tell you to go to another check out. Usually even before the fucker realizes that that cart of stuff you have? Yeah it’s not all your shit because OH HAY you’re shopping with a friend and 13 of those items are yours and 10 are hers and yes you certainly CAN go through the 13 items or less check out.

But who am I to judge? I figure you got a 2-5 item clearance in those lanes. And I don’t count multiple items of the same thing as different items. Not like I’ll go through with 20 items on the 13 items or less lane….

3. It’s a queue in the grocery store……was your watering boiling for your day-glow cheese sauce noodles and you had to waddle home before the pot went dry? FFS.

4. I couldn’t give a shit if they were Purple People Eaters, though I might get eaten up. Sounds like you have a problem with people who aren’t from your part of Goler Mountain, OP.

5. “They were buying stuff to make the Dim Sum”

omg lol lol lol

I think ignorant ppl are ignorant people irrespective of race, colour etc. It is possible that you ran into some ignorant people. The fact that they’re Asian has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Perhaps they didn’t understand the sign? Perhaps they did? Who knows.

I would also like a bit of elaboration on how they “played the race card” please.

6. Nails, they “played the race card” by being Asian while doing something the OP didn’t like.

It’s despicable, isn’t it?

7. Don’t make fun of the Golers, that book I read about them was the creepiest thing I’ve ever read! p.s. they could read…

8. There’s quite a surge of racial/ethnic bitches lately…

So far though, the award for “most entertaining racial/ethnic bitch fail” goes to the Ottawa 14-year old who posted a hateful rant on Youtube, only to have his full address and phone numbers published in the comments section of his video (and subsequently all over the internets on various websites). A star is born.

9. I just remembered that I totally read and commented on your full user name yesterday, Donk.

Turns out I’m full of fail, not win 🙁

Also, good point Frenchie, I’m always suspicious of racial bitches when they come out around the same time…

Two Asian ones in two days…. hmmm

10. I was wondering when someone would bring up the Golers on this forum. heh.

Bluenoser: try living in Wolfville and attempting to get a hold of that book. I checked it out at a certain academic library and there were quite a few strategic pages torn out.

PS: don’t fuck with the golers. They’re a right some dangerous bunch when they wanna be.

11. Its “8 Items or Less”, right? So to go through you need a total of 8 Items, or… less. Less than what? 10? 20? 50? Sign doesn’t say 8 items or less than 8 items, fuckers.

12. You said Asian FAMILY – perhaps, they thought 8 items or less, PER PERSON? Either that or they were ignorant arsebandits.

13. if i go into that line, and someone says something to me about the limit. i usually smile and say sorry, can’t count, or i can’t read. that usually shuts them the fuck up in a hurry.

14. I’d be pissed too… The fact that she spoke Chinese to him is fucking ignorant, at least have the courage to tell me to go fuck myself in a way I can understand. I would have been the loud obnoxious prick that would have made sure they went to another checkout, or that store would have been paying for my 8 items. To me that’s better than silently fuming and submitting a Bitch to the Coast.

Call me racist but I get such a shitty vibe from so many Asian immigrants, I feel looked down on by them. I don’t judge people based on race, I’ve just observed that many of my interactions with Asian immigrants have left a real shitty taste in my mouth. I think our culture values manners maybe a little more than theirs, who knows. Yes I know that there are many different Asian cultures all vastly unique and everything, before someone decides they want to educate me. I still don’t pre-judge.

15. I’ve never really had any interactions with Asians, I just tend to admire them from afar. ^^; As for the manners thing, I know that Japanese culture is very polite. Not so sure about Chinese, Korean, etc.

16. Ummmmm I’ve had many many experiences with Asians (usually students) and have worked closely with them and they’ve always been very polite. Maybe they’re racist behind my back, but whenever I’d helped them in a professional capacity they’ve always been very gracious about thanking me and have been quite friendly. As well, while working with them in a student environment, i’ve had nothing but great experiences. The ones I met were always bringing treats for us to meetings and i commented once on how a pen one of the girls had was cute (an cute little bunny that’s a hello kitty type character in China) and the next class she brought one for me to have.

I think what we don’t get is how culture in Asia is different than culture here and I honestly don’t think it’s their intention to offend. For instance: most Asian students where I work won’t hold the door for you. I generally find that particularly rude — getting a door slammed in your face — but that’s just what they’re used to. Not saying it’s right or wrong, just understanding that they’re probably not trying to purposely be an asshole to me.

As well, Asian cultures/countries are very homogenious. They’re not used to multiculturalism like we are and like other cultures are, and as such, they do tend to keep to other Asians overall which can give the impression of race discrimination.

I know it’s important to make strides to not expect everyone to accommodate your cultural norms when you immigrate to a new place, but there are some things, little quirkes that you just can’t get rid of. To us it might seem racist and rude, but to them it’s perfectly normal and not intended to offend.

As for the language issue: last summer I was thrown into a completely French environment while essentially not functioning IN said language. It was tough the first little while, but everyone I encountered were very accommodating (which kinda smashed that myth that english canada has about les quebecois being assholes), but if you think about it — French and English share the same alphabet and number system. Mandarin and Cantonese do not share the same alphabet as English, so there’s that extra learning curve right there.

Of course, in any culture you get assholes. Not because they’re a certain race but because they’re just assholes.

17. OP, did you ask to speak to the manager? Why were Asians in that grocery store? Don’t they already have enough of their own grocery stores in this city?

18. I also noticed when I was in an authentic Chinese restaurant with my Chinese friend, to get the waitress’s attention he’d raise his hand/snap his fingers and yell “HEY” and so did the other Asian people in the restaurant so I guess that’s how they roll. When he first did it I was like “OMG SHE’S GOING TO SPIT IN OUR FOOD YOU JERK” but then when I saw others doing it, I felt better about what I was eating :). Except I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to eat certain things in a particular dish, they were just meant for flavour or something. That would have been great info for my ignorant self before I ate them ;D!

PS: I love azns.

19. “…was that satire tommyjules?”

Yeah, snoop. I await the politician’s response.

20. I have a number of close friends and past roomates/classmates who were/are Asian exchange students from Japan and China in particular. And my ex’s parents are immigrants from Japan…

They’re just regular people who happen to be from a different place. I just don’t get the big stink some people raise about Asians.

21. Me neither, snoop.

They just tend to roll a bit differently than we do, like Mel said. It’s not like they’re purposely trying to be assholes.

22. Last time I was in California, I went into a large store that was like a Shoppers here (except you could buy booze, & there was produce).
When a person in front of me in the 10 & under lane had more than 10 items. The cash register machine on pricing the 10th item automatically totalled & you had to pay. You couldn’t put the 11th item through…but as the girl said, you can go to the back of the line & come through with the rest of the items ~:)

IF the technology for the registers is there in California…it has to be available here as well.

23. b195 – there’s a fresh batch of students on campus this week as part of an international exchange to Japan… I saw a gang of them wandering campus this morning. All those cute little asian girls and I thought of yoU!

24. lol I live in the uni part of town, so I see many Asians in my travels.

25. I have met a few assholes who were Asian, but I’ve met way more asshole white North Americans. Does that mean that white North Americans are more assholee than Asians? No. Because I live in a place where white North Americans are the majority and Asians a minority… so my sample ratio is unbalanced. Besides that, my sample size in general is but a tiny portion of the earths population and thus also meaningless. Besides that, I know that social interactions and the judgments based on them are completely subjective. Especially after the incredibly flawed thing known as “human memory” has had a few years to fuck up the details in my head. So why bother extrapolating discriminatory assumptions about Asians from such flawed data?

Also, Japan is insane…

http://www.cracked.com/blog/20-japanese-ro…

…and I love it.

26. Haha nice. Maybe we’ll end up running into each other at some point.

27. Yeah PK, Definitely a must read, you’ll see just how scary life on the mountain can be. I live in BC, Vancouver now has more Mandarin speakers than English. The worst thing about it is that the chinese food out here is REAL! No cherry sauce on my chicken balls (lol), egg rolls that look like pieces of fish, noodles in the chow mein. Take me to Fongs anytime!

28. Yeah, I’m with you PK, cultural norms are different everywhere you go, what is perceived as rude by one culture may not be by another. That’s hard to understand though, and when it’s your native county I feel you have a right to be a little put off when you’re being treated in a way that you would consider rude, offensive or condescending.

I’m sure not all Asians are (insert adjective here). There’s billions of them. I don’t like racial stereotypes or any other stereotypes. I just have remarked that when I rarely do interact with these people, they tend to piss me the fuck off. Specifically by being rude and condescending, they interrupt a lot too, I’ve noticed. I think there’s a difference between making that observation and being racist or prejudice.

And your point about how they stick to themselves also irks me because yes, it does seem racist and xenophobic (did I spell that right?). You come to Canada but you don’t want to meet or get to know any Canadians? Rubs me the wrong way. Basically I feel pre-judged myself much of the time when dealing with them. I get this air of superiority.

To your point though PK, I lived in France for three years as a kid. The French have a reputation of being snobs. Their culture is much more… I guess strict is the word I’d use. Everyone and everything is supposed to fall in line. It works well for them, they have a great quality of life, generally.

They are definitely not snobs. They are some of the kindest and most accommodating people I’ve ever met. Also, the people I At first though, the culture shock had me believing the stereotypes.

Canadians are a very polite people so we are spoiled in that regard. It’s easy to be polite though, when there’s so few of us in such a large amount of space. Imagine if there were 1.4 billion Canadians and Canada was the size of China. I bet we wouldn’t be so polite then.

While I understand that there are cultural differences I still feel I have the right to be a little peeved off when people come here and want to be disrespectful, even if they’re not purposely trying to be assholes as you put it, PK.

In regards to this bitch, I would be peeved weather or not it was an Asian or Black or Latino or White family, but it sounds as if the OB got the impression that they thought they would get away with it because they’re Asian and can play the card of “I can’t read English” card. Taking advantage of the fact that no one wanted to offend them. To me, that’s pretty low. To me it’s almost racist to give them a pass because they’re Asian. Were they given said pass because of their race/nationality? Who knows, but I know some people would rather just shut up than start an argument with a non English speaking customer.

If you’re gonna say that it’s their culture makes them act in a way we consider rude, I counter with, my culture says that when someone’s rude or disrespectful to you, you react in disgust, goes both ways. I’d be more willing to try to get to know and understand them if I didn’t get the impression that they think they’re better than me. It’s a tough cookie.

I don’t hate Asians or any specific group of people I’ve never met.

29. “They are definitely not snobs. They are some of the kindest and most accommodating people I’ve ever met. Also, the people I At first though, the culture shock had me believing the stereotypes.”

remove the words “Also, the people I” from there. my bad.

30. lol I’ve been researching the Golers and other similar stories for the last few mins.. thanks guys.. I’m officially creeped the fuck out.

31. it’s funny young thomas, as pk mentioned, we have never spoken of them on the bitch

32. lol I remember my friend telling me that his dad told him of some similar family, might have been the Golers. You know who I thought you guys were talking about at first? The Mongolians. lol cuz we all know that they at one time were not to be fucked with.
I mean we were on the subject of Asians..

33. The Golers were/are somewhat like the Beverley Hillbillies, minus the oil, cement pond and the lovely house. Instead their family motto is “nothin sez luvvin like doing yer first cuzzin”.
Whenever the family get togethers are over, they have a variation of that old 50’s saying – see ya later alligator – there’s is see ya later fornicator, in a while pedophile.
This has nothing at all to do with Asians and 8 items.

34. Basil, what am I SUPPOSED to do when my sister gives me that come-hither look?

PK, the longer you are in Quebec, the more the language issue presents itself. While not EVERYONE up there was an asshole, there were many times where the vibe was a slight undercurrent, and there were many times I had people openly greasing English Canada to my face and ranting about how evil English is.

35. But Basil a first cuzzin is legal in Canada. Now watching the ad for Swamp People on History gives me the willies, I’s scairt to actually watch it. I think it makes Deliverance seem like a children’s show.

36. Can’t say I would blame them for using our Politically Correct B.S. against us, I mean.. sometimes you just have to get somewhere and if you can play stupid and get away with it, why wouldn’t you! If they had more than 8-10 items they should have been told.. but the COMPANY FEARS THE RACE CARD, THE EMPLOYEE FEARS IT. That doesn’t mean that they are playing it.
However — that being said. I completely understand why people think that some Asians put off a superiority vibe. I’m willing to bet a lot of people who got that vibe were heavy people.
My friend has studied Japanese, and gotten almost fluent with the language, and those young Japanese in small groups.. (teens, U students etc) CONSTANTLY put down every large or fat person on the bus. We are not being paranoid. They are laughing at us, and very, very rude. It makes me wonder how many other so called racist people are just offended. When you come to a country where there is an official language, you should be made to speak that language in public. Use your native tongue at home! I should know if it’s wagging at me, not just sit there intuitively knowing, and unable to prove it. We all should have the right to defend ourselves. Not just the immigrants.

37. Oh, and before you all call me a racist, I’m far from it. I don’t hate on any groups, these young Asians are no different from young Caucasian, English speaking punks, but with those people, we at least know whats being said and where we stand. It’s very frustrating to know you’re being talked about, but not what’s being said. I used to weigh over 300 lbs, I experienced lots of cruel jokes, and I’m not saying that any one group was worse than any other, but I find it hard to hear Asians they are sooo polite, when I know otherwise.

38. ..you know what..you mean asian as in ..chinese..no japanese i have ever met (and i’ve met a LOT) would try to pull this shit..

39. Speaking of playing cards, I’ve been going to the Sobey’s on the #7 in Dartmouth for years, and have observed that it is usually one particular group of people who park in the fire zone in front of the store. Coincidence or self entitlement? Let the shit storm begin….

40. … so what if they speak another language … who caressssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.

41. ditto what Donk said.

“When you come to a country where there is an official language, you should be made to speak that language in public. Use your native tongue at home!”

That is quite possibly the most ignorant thing I’ve ever heard anyone say on the Coast, ever.

We should force people to speak English/French in public and restrict the use of other languages to the household?

Seriously?!

That’s like something out of a dystopian novel! Actually, forget future fiction, this has actually happened before. That’s what governments have done in the past to oppress minorities during freaking genocides and slavery and shit, it’s called de-culturalization and it’s purpose was to prevent communications and thus uprisings amongst the oppressed, and to eventually take away their cultural identity.

Sure your reasons for endorsing language restrictions (they “should be made”? by who?) seems to just be so that fat people on the bus won’t feel talked about, which I guess is harmless enough if incredibly stupid.

But still, this is just not how a free country rolls… and for good reason.

42. She’s sum dim eh Snoop.

“minorities during freaking genocides and slavery and shit”

… you know when I read that this morning in my half asleep state I immediately thought “This shounds like some Hitler nonsense” glad I wasn’t the only one thinking along those lines …

“before you all call me a racist, I’m far from it” Quote MEEshell.
Usually when people have to announce that they aren’t racist, they’re in denial or working their way through some latent feelings.

… but meh, whatevs.

43. Some of the comments on this bitch remind of the bitch someone posted last year (I think) about Middle Eastern students.

44. Yes maybe we will cross paths Brendon (or was it Brendan? Or Brandon…fuck, change yo name)! I’ll be the white girl with azn hair and full of orange cat fur, smiling at the Asians as they pass me by ;D

45. lol It’s Brendon (though I’ve been called Brandon many times before so I don’t really care that much) and I’ll be a white boy wearing a fedora and maybe a brown leather jacket depending on the weather.

46. I remember snoop mentioning it was the most ignorant thing read on the coast that time as well….
let’s see who’ll top this one.

47. ===== We are not being paranoid. They are laughing at us, and very, very rude.=====

le Sigh, and le facepalm.

=====It makes me wonder how many other so called racist people are just offended.=====

“So called”?

=====When you come to a country where there is an official language, you should be made to speak that language in public.=====

So when I go to Quebec I should be compelled to speak French?

=====Use your native tongue at home! I should know if it’s wagging at me, not just sit there intuitively knowing, and unable to prove it.=====

Seriously, do you have someone tie your shoes for you in the morning, or does the orderly do the velcro?

=====We all should have the right to defend ourselves. Not just the immigrants.=====

*”Defend*” ourselves? Was the Chinaman making fun of you?
Did he go pee pee in your Coke?

Yeah, those ungrateful, non English-speaking fucks. Fuck those guys, with their culture they want to keep in touch with. Fuck the kids especially, being taught the language of their people. They should all know English anyway.
Maybe when the immigrant from Kenya was being gang fucked by soldiers she should have been going to English lessons instead, right?

You make Don Cherry look like Noam Chomsky.

48. Did I zZz? I have the memory of a goldfish, I can’t even remember bitches or what I wrote in them from last week…

49. Yeah that’s not azn hair, that’s emo/scene kid hair ICK. I just meant I have dark hair and bangs in the front, the traditional weeaboo hair style ;D

50. “Was the Chinaman making fun of you?
Did he go pee pee in your Coke?”

LOL, good one. Reminds me of:

“A chinaman peed on my fucking rug. It really tied the room together.” 🙂

Seriously, some of the comments on this thread are mega-facepalm material. Yes, fat people: every non-english speaker on the bus is making fun of you, therefore we need the language police to beat offenders with a stick every time cantonese, mandarin, filipino, farsi or arabic is heard in public. And don’t be late for the 5 minutes of hate everyday, other party members might notice.

Seriously, get a life. Better yet, get a fucking passport and travel for a while (outside ‘merica, I mean)…you might learn a thing or two about life.

Frenchie out.

51. I hope I didn’t come off as much of a douche as meeshell did. Like I said, I lived in France and got the impression that people didn’t appreciate it when I spoke english with my other anglo friends in public. It made me feel kinda mad and unwelcome. I guess paranoia is human nature, people often assume others are laughing at them when they hear ppls laughing. Where does the oppression stop MeeShell?

How are we supposed to MAKE people speak a certain language. They have to learn it to integrate in our workforce. Yes, they shouldn’t be allowed to immigrate here without knowing one of our official languages, or maybe they could be forcibly enrolled in language courses, but I dunno, why should we pay for that? They can learn english anywhere on earth. But I’m off topic.

I mean you honestly expect two people with the same native tongue to try to communicate with each other in English just to please you? That’s gotta be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. When people in France would tell me to speak french with my english speaking friends I laughed, because it’s a totally unrealistic and stupid notion. I speak french all day, I wasn’t always great at it and it took a lot of effort, so when I’m out of school and minding my own business kindly fuck off and worry about your own language. If you weren’t nosy you wouldn’t care about what I was saying. Meeshell you should go live in a non-free country, see how you like it. Would you want to be forced to speak arabic, for example, in public when your talking to your friend who is a fellow anglophone? I don’t use this phrase to often but get real.

I dunno I’m just not afraid to state my opinion. Their cultural norms can be interpreted as plain rudeness by us. Kind of like Americans, I take a lot of phone calls from them at my job. At first you’re a little put off by their strictly business approach, but you get used to it, they’re not bad people. Canadians are just really polite and have a hard time dealing with rudeness. You could argue that that’s our problem and nobody else’s.

52. I finally came on to check out your comments on this one, and I’m sooo not surprised. As a matter of fact, it’s kind of the highlight of my day now!
I’m far from racist, just believe in respect. Period. And I’ll stand by my own opinions. I post my face as opposed to all of you people out there who hide behind the internet mask and bitch all day.
People like their masks don’t they? Including people who can speak another language & smile at you while they talk shit. I just think if you’re gonna talk shit, be open about it.
I may not be right, I’ve heard that one before a million times, and I guess FORCED was not the best word to use, I’m not talking about penalties or jail time or crazy stuff, you know what I wish every time I witness this kind of crap?
That someone, anyone had the balls to say, hey.. I know you speak English — What do you have to hide?? In these times of terrorists and crazy shit, people are paranoid. (Whether politically correct B.S. says so or not) And sometimes, we’re not being paranoid at all, even though it’s the general consensus.

53. Wow…T’es vraiment une crisse d’épaisse!*

🙂

I really don’t know why english speakers automatically assume that everyone within earshot speaking another language is talking about them in a derogatory way. I’d really like to know where this insecurity comes from. It’s either that or you think you’re so incredibly special that we couldn’t possibly be discussing another topic then you.

“I’m far from racist, just believe in respect.”

You really haven’t convinced me.

“I know you speak English — What do you have to hide??”

Really? You LOOK at someone and you can tell which languages they know? Fascinating! How do you do it?

But yeah, you whole point makes sense though, if two folks are speaking arabic together on the bus, they should switch to english (even though they’re not talking to you at all), just to give you the opportunity to eavesdrop.

“In these times of terrorists and crazy shit, people are paranoid.”

You make a compelling case. I concede.

*Translation: Wow, you really are a f***ing idiot!

54. I’m not an idiot. I’m a people watcher. And I know they speak English, or the people I am speaking of.. that I have experienced this with.. because they speak English, UNTIL they want to say something derogatory about someone else. It’s juvenile and as annoying as the teenagers who text each other back and forth on the bus doing the same shit.. but what does make me seem idiotic, looking back is how I ever got on this topic anyway, Looking at that Bitch.. I must have been some kinda cranky.
BUT body language speaks louder than words. .. and some people don’t seem to get that.
I’m not sure how I got only this topic except you see all of these people blindly defending a family, and a race on the whole, when they weren’t there, and they don’t know. How I got onto this topic I’ll never understand, and I apologize for that, because normally these are views I would never speak of publicly. I just felt bad for the bitcher who is made out to be a racist because he thinks it’s unfair the way we are all so afraid to offend, that the only people getting the short end of the stick, ARE the Caucasians. I`m all for being fair, but fair to all would be nice, not just minorities. .. hell does that term even apply anymore? I think there are less Caucasians now, but I’m not going to troll the net looking that up. (Notice, I said: I think)
And just out of curiosity.. how is they had to make the dim sum by 3 o’clock any less offensive? We all have prejudices. They’ve been drilled into our heads for a long time. That doesn’t mean I would want to hurt anyone, and I argue with people all the time about immigration, FOR not against.
I’m not all bad. This is just one little thing that annoys me and no — I should not have put it out there. Sorry.

55. Fuck Tommy, all that time in France and you didn’t learn that the French hate everything and everyone who is not French. You do know where the term “douche” originated? There’s a good reason for that. LOL. One does not go to France to learn about good manners or discretion.

56. ” that the only people getting the short end of the stick, ARE the Caucasians. I`m all for being fair, but fair to all would be nice, not just minorities. .. hell does that term even apply anymore? I think there are less Caucasians now, but I’m not going to troll the net looking that up.”

Girl you crazy.

57. I’ve seen England and been to France.
And there I saw my wife’s underpants.

And I don’t find the French, from Paris to Avignon to Marseilles, any more rude than Torontonians, New Yorkers or Haligonians.

I have wanted to twist the heads off a few Montrealers, though, but that’s just politics.

58. A LETTER TO “THE GAZETTE”

Attached is my letter to The Gazette (May 12) – I am a regular letter-writer as you might suspect – which might provide a view of similar issues in Quebec, and in particular Montréal. It is in response to a previous op-ed piece of May 10, the “authors” of which being about a dozen university professors from across Quebec including some “big names.” Kathleen Weil is the Quebec Minister of Immigration, a portfolio Quebec shares with Ottawa.

Re: “Immigration” No quotas by geographic origin” (Gazette, May 10).

The authors take issue with Kathleen Weil’s consultation paper on immigration that limits up to 30 percent the proportion of immigrants from one region or another.

For the authors, this is an unacceptable “return to the practices that were in place before the adoption of the Canadian and Quebec charters of rights and that cannot be reconciled with the principles of universality of immigration policy and equality of all persons under the law.” So far, so good.

However, it appears that some immigrants from certain areas encounter problems with integration. This is so because “it is possible, even probable, that the linguistic knowledge, quality of education received, or work experience acquired by residents of some countries is not always at the level required in Quebec’s employment market.” So, what do the authors propose?

Well, what is needed, according to the authors, is not blind quotas but “a better and more stringent selection process, particularly in terms of evaluating linguistic knowledge, training and professional abilities.”

But isn’t this, um, more or less what Weil was proposing in the first place?

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

59. A correction is in order:

Actually, in my own experience and as a rule, Torontonians ARE more rude than Frenchmen, New Yorkers and Haligonians. My bastard public school French (grades 5 – 10) learned decades ago, amused the French and won them over. I once had a long and opaque “conversation” with a few local gentleman in the little village of St. Victor des Oules (just west of Avignon) about where to buy firewood. They never gave up on me and eventually they made me understand that Francois, whose mother lived down the street on the edge of the village and where he was presently enjoying a long lunch, owned a truck and would take me to his farm, which is where the local people usually obtained firewood. And so he did, taking the time to introduce me to his wife and children when we arrived. Very likable people the French.

My language abilities only seem to irritate many Quebecers, but as I said, I believe that politics intrudes into these situations like unwelcome hemorrhoid.

My comment about “twisting the heads off a few Montrealers” was not aimed at sometime posters here at The Coast.

60. Oooh MM. I find myself in love with you now, how and why I don’t quite understand … probably in the same way I love Daxflame.

61. RSVPs

: Lieutenant Esposito (11:45AM) – Non, monsieur, I realized that I was not the target of your intemperate comments on the residents of Montréal. Sometimes, however, I must say that I feel like “twisting the heads off” some Haligonians but, naturellement, I refrain from saying so.

: melectric (12:56PM) – I think that you find yourself falling in love with me because of my penetrating intelligence, a characterist I’m sure “Daxflame” (whoever he is) also exhibits. However, Monsieur de Montréal would be most interested in hearing your own explanation. Does it involve strong feelings of lust? Write back soon.

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

62. It’s something I can’t quite put my finger on, something I’ll dub Montreal Syndrome.

63. Froot Loops!

P.S I just realized like a yr ago that froot loops wasn’t spelled as fruit … so they aren’t false advertising. Good on ’em.

“It’s something I can’t quite put my finger on, something I’ll dub Montreal Syndrome.”

Have you thought further about this “Montreal Syndrome,” melectric? Any deeper insights? Share them with us, melectric!

By the way, you’ve got to watch where you put your finger, melectric. Don’t go down that path. Oh, I forgot to ask – is your bonce close-cropped?

“Shreddies?”

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

65. Lolz, melecrtic. I had to google Daxflame, at first I thought that it was an antipsychotic (jk).

“because of my penetrating intelligence, a characterist I’m sure “Daxflame”…also exhibits.” – annie’s responce makes more sense if you swap ‘intelligence’ with ‘les grand douchiness’.

66. “Don’t they already have enough of their own grocery stores in this city?”

If you can shop in public so can they. Your people gave the world absolutely nothing but an hour-long parade that’s forgotten in a minute. Asia gave us Bruce Lee, kung-fu and wontons.

Oh great, now your people are going to want their own store.

67. I guess it’s just like, you’re so ridiculous you don’t even seem real. Well I’m sure you’re not but just the way you pretend to have trouble understanding what us common folk are saying because you’re just sooo above it all; I just love it and you’ve captured my heart, which is where I got “Montreal” Syndrome because it’s like Stockholm Syndrome only you haven’t physically captured me, just emotionally.

Corn flakes!

68. Oh and um, “close-cropped bonce”, are you asking about the size of my head or my hair or something? Please explain further to this high school graduate.

69. I thought he was inquiring about the status of your merkin. Bermuda Triangle or Last of the Mohicans?

70. RSVPs (IV)

: “Groupie” (May 16, 10:11AM) – “I guess it’s just like, you’re so ridiculous you don’t even seem real.”

An excellent point, Groupie, the point being, of course, what is “reality.” The story about the natives of the Galapagos Islands is instructive. They had no trouble recognizing the small rowing boat that put off from Darwin’s ship “The Beagle” to come ashore since they themselves used canoes. However, they failed to recognze The Beagle itself. They didn’t even “see” it. For them, The Beagle had no “reality.” I am The Beagle, Groupie. My reality does not register on your consciousness.

“Corn Flakes?”

: Groupie (10:16AM) – You may find the reference to the “close-cropped bonce” by following the following instructions: (1) Google “The Spectator Magazine. (2) Click on “Blogs.” (3) Click on “Ron Liddle.” (4) Click on his latest blog. (5) Click on the first “Comment.” There you will find the reference to the “close-cropped bonce” which I shamelessly lifted.

: Everything (10:12AM) – Yes, I am a man, at least I was the last time I looked.

: Ralm (10:43AM) – Daxflame is, “To this day is surrounded by controversy on whether he is, in fact, an almost homo tard with no social skills whatsoever or an amazingly good actor with a lot of brain power.” Choose the second option, Ralm. In fact, choose the second part of the second option, ie. the reference to “a lot of brain power”only.

: Ivan (10:47AM) – Why are you so interested in my pubic wig?

: Everything (10:52AM) – I have never seen Star Trek. Never.

A pleasure as always.

Ref: 10:52AM – I Googled “Facepalm” and read that it originated with the TV show “Star Trek” which I have never seen. Come to that I don’t watch any fictional TV. I guess it’s for the same reason that I don’t read any fiction either. (It’s called “having a mind.”) “Derp?” “NVM?” I will certainly consider consulting the “Urban Dictionary” for future Underclass references, Everything. Thank you for your guidance.

: “CF Ivan” (12:25PM) – See “Everything” above at 10:52AM

: “Groupie” (12:49PM) – I forgot a step. After Googling “The Spectator Magazine,” click on “Magazine” and THEN go through the regular steps. Rod Liddle is one of the best. So for that matter is Jeremy Clarke (“Low Life”) and Taki (“High Life”). Admittedly, “The Spectator” is only for those who have a mind. Write back with your impressions, Groupie.

76. I think my name change confused him Donk. HAY MM, melectric = mel. Ya dig? Da teach jus got skool’d. Jk my love <3. I mean, just joking my love *heart*. Do you understand any of this? Language barriers can be quite fun ;D. The Google translator app comes in handy for talking to teh azn folks ^_^. OH funny azn story: my friend and I planned to go to retro night a couple weeks ago and I invited our Chinese friend. He didn't really understand "retro" but didn't really ask what it meant. We just assumed he knew what it meant. So here I am, crimping my hair, putting it in a side ponytail with a scrunchee, putting blood red blush on one side of my cheek, wearing one massive dangly earring and wearing some awful eighties shirt and tights and he just sat there and thought that this was just me dressing up for a regular night out. Teehee. I felt so embarrassed for some reason because I was just imaging what he was thinking in his head before we explained to him what retro was!

77. YO ANNIE – “The story about the natives of the Galapagos Islands” – Title and page is required.

I won’t wait up for an answer.

78. RSVPs (VI)

: “Mel” (May 16, 5:37PM) – Yes, I can see it now: “Mel” = “melectric.” Very clever, Mel. But I guess a large part of my confusion related to the context. In other words, there was no relation between “Mel” and the text of the post, i.e., “Mel” just came out of nowhere. For example, when asked about the weather, do you orinarily reply, “Mel?” When asked the time, do you ordinarily reply, “Mel?” See what I mean, Mel?

– Maybe you would have been more embarrassed if you knew what your “azn” friend was REALLY thinking, Mel. Am I right? As the evening unfolded did you come to realize what he REALLY had in mind Mel? Give details, Mel.

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

79. Sméagol, no reply? It’s ok,I wasn’t expcting one.
You’re quite the bullshitter, aren’t you, I’ve noticed that on more than one occasion.

The natives of the Galapagos Islands – No such thing. There is/was no indigenous population in the Galapagos, AND, the Spanish were already there when Darwin arrived.

You’re pretty fucking stupid if you thought that you could get away with a bullsht lie like that.

Also because of this glaring lie, eveything that you’ve posted in the past is now in question.

Imagine that, a self-purported intellectual & a PhDuh to boot, lying to make himself look better.

: The Parasite – (May 17, 10:05AM; 10:25AM; 10:44AM)

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! It turned out better much than I expected. The Parasite took the “bait” and swallowed it hook, line and sinker! When I planted the bait – “Charles Darwin – ‘The Voyage of the Beagle,’ 1839. pp 40-43” – I knew that The Parasite would be on it in a flash. His eyes must have been bulging with glee – here’s something factual he could catch me up on! His posts kept coming (see above) but -it must be horrible for him – he now realizes he has been duped.

Anyone reading my post about Darwin and the natives of the Galapagos Islands (May 16, 12:01PM) realized that it was just what I said it was -a “story” to illustrate a point I was making. The story is aprocyphal (say that slowly to yourself, Parasite, and try not to move your lips) but interesting. Anyway, The Parasite, his mind clouded by a bilious envy, saw it as his main chance and took it. What a fool!

For those not familiar with The Parasite, you should know that ever since it became common knowledge that I had a Ph.D. he has been unable to control his envy and his spite since, of course, he has no degrees (and judging by his posts one wonders whether he even has high school). For a long time he has posted his malicious jibes and insults after each one of my posts – yes each one! What a sad, tortured man he must be.

But now it’s all finished. This is the last time I will trouble to respond to the twerp. Sadly, however, I don’t suppose that it will stop his poisonous outbursts. He will just have to stuff them back down his malicious craw.

: Mel (10:15AM) – Well, Mel, it might have been worse, if you know what I mean.

A pleasure as always.

“Anyone reading my post about Darwin and the natives of the Galapagos Islands (May 16, 12:01PM) realized that it was just what I said it was -a “story” to illustrate a point I was making.”

Of course, the question arises, why provide a “full citation (title & page)” that is obviously fabricated if the intent was to tell a “story to illustrate a point”? In other words, why not just tell the story without fabricating a reference? Have the standards of the Academy fallen so low even among its champions?

LET THE RECORD SPEAK!

Two commenters have taken it upon themselves to question Monsieur’s tactics in exposing The Parasite’s posts by planting a ruse designed to expose the latter for what he really was – a dedicated and malicious stalker. Two initial points:

First, it should be pointed out that the two commenters are themselves not without axes to grind. The Lieutenant (May 17, 5:14PM) is obviously still smarting from his spanking at the hands of Monsieur on “Going hunting on Friday” for an incoherent post: there was no conclusion to his lengthy account of hunting. (The present case is reversed. The Lieutenant gives a (false) conclusion that is not supported by his elephantine tracing of the exchanges between The Parasite and Monsieur.) While less methodical than the Lieutenant, Wheeliep (7:21PM) is still smarting from his spanking by Monsieur over the “conversation” vs. “exercise” debate, a debate he initiated.

Secondly, both respondents have failed to distinguish between the two forms of my account of the inter-action of the Beagle and the Galapagos Islanders. My initial post (May 16, 12:01PM) clearly stated that it was a “story.” The word itself was used. I thought there could be no possibility of error but, when dealing with those with an agenda, all bets are off.

So, after being pressed by The Parasite for citation (title and page) in support of the “story,” I planted the second form of the event, the bait – Darwin’s “The Voyage of the Beagle” – knowing that the Parasite would immediately google it and, of course, the Galapagos Islands. This he immediately did and proceeded to crow over the results. But the Lieutenant and Wheeliep failed to distinguish the two distinct forms I gave of the Beagle – the one the story, the other the bait -and proceeded, following the Parasite, to accuse me of “backpedalling.”

The confusion became clear with the Lieutenant’s question at the end of his post: “Why provide a full citation (title & page) that is obviously fabricated if the intent was to tell a story to illustrate a point.” But, of course, I didn’t provide a full citation – by the way Darwin DID write “The Voyage of the Beagle” in 1839 so it is not “obviously fabricated” (only the pages were) – to support the story as the Lieutenant claims. I did it to expose the Parasite. Monsieur is not suprised by Wheeliep’s failure to make the distinction since, of course, he is conceptually challenged. However he is somewhat (only somewhat) suprised by the Lieutenant’s but I supposed his agenda clouded his judgement.

Now, Monsieur would like either or both the Lieutenant and Wheeliep to specify just how he “backpedalled.” Be careful. Support your assertions by specific reference to the record.

Let the record speak!

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

91. MM you need to get yourself some tail. Ask Mel.

… use the urban dictionary for tail.

92. Mreh. It seems like any shampoo I’ve ever bought, I’ve grown tired and bored of you before I can finish you off, Monsieur.

93. Listen, Lil Monsieur, I’m not smarting from anything you’ve written in my general direction. A year ago you wrote in a post that you’re here to “take the piss”, and engage your (superior) mind. The person sitting there typing, if we met, I would take seriously in a conversation if we met, but on the board, where you’ve adopted this character who fancies himself everyone’s perfesser, not so much.

You got caught bullshitting on the Bullshit Board. Take your spanking like a big boy.
It’s not like it actually means anything.
Who are you, Survivor?
Let.
It.
Go.

94. MM,

Your response is . . . feeble . . . or limp.

The record here is quite clear to anyone who can read the English language. Your “defense” is no defense at all. You “planted” the page reference to Darwin’s Voyage of the Beagle in order to expose the agenda of a “dedicated and malicious stalker”?

Perhaps, but I honestly don’t think you’re that clever. I think you carelessly and impetuously responded with the page reference because, let’s face it, when you make comments here you consider yourself to be “slumming”. You have, at times, claimed that your visits here are to promote philosophical self-examination and reasoned argument in the pursuit of knowledge, but that is so obviously a flimsy disguise for your real motivation, which is to chastise the online yahoo element. So on those occasions when, through hubris or carelessness, you make statements that are demonstrably false, you come up with an amusing “tale” (like the one above) about how you planned it all that way in order to make some other point.

Hugo landed one on you and your ego is still smarting.

Take your lumps like a man, man. The punishment needn’t be too severe. It might be that the absent Grace O’Malley could be coaxed back to administer the spanking you so richly deserve (and clearly desire).

95. I don’t think his response is the only thing that’s feeble or limp. Hiyo!

96. Missrepresentaoion, bullshit, and accusations of “axes to grind”.

Now you know how he got his PhDuh.

I don’t know if anybody remembers, but in several other posts, annie made a ‘premptive strike’ by claiming a bias on my part and stating that I would only ridicule & dismiss his writings. Something tells me that’s the way he went after that piece of paper, claiming an existing & unfair bias against him by the board in defense of his dissertation, and so on.

As far as Montremoleman’s ‘letting it go’ or ‘take it like a man’, sorry guys, it ain’t going to happen. He’s a narcissist, he can never be wrong, and cannot accept responsibility for making a mistake.
Two will get you ten, that Smeghead has already convinced himself, that what he said, is true.

97. Meeshell, it’s true that it’s immature to speak ill of someone in a language they don’t understand, but so what. That doesn’t mean it should be the rule that people must speak english while in public. You’re a fucking tool imo.

THE ARROGANCE OF IGNORANCE

Oh well, I suppose that I was being unrealistic when I asked that Wheeliep and the Lieutenant support any counter-claims by specific references to the record, i.e, from the current thread. As I initially thought, the axes they had to grind worked to preclude any reflective response. Their ignorance (or their purposeful dismissal of the record) of course played a central role in their empty retorts.

:Wheeliep (10:19AM) makes no reference to the record at all. In his dogmatic (and, frankly, stupid) fashion he just knows that he is right when he asserts: “Let.It.Go.” Wheeliep is fond of periods. He seems to think they add emphasis to his unsubstantiated assertions. What they do, of course, is just add an insight into the vacuity of his thought.

: The Lieutenant (10:45AM) reports, in relation to my inserting the Beagle “bait,” that he “honestly doesn’t think that you’re that clever.” Of course, the Lieutenant provides no grounds for his assertion, whether from the thread itself or in general terms. It is just something off the top of his head. What the Lieutenant doesn’t realize, of course, is that in addition to the arrogance of his assertion – he thinks he is in a position to pass on my intelligence – is that the assertion itself reflects upon himself. In other words, he doesn’t realize just how arrogantly stupid he is. In still other words, the Lieutenant may be said to truly posseses “the arrogance of ignorance.”

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

P.S. The other posts are not worthy of any further coment.

102. I have no axe, Monsewer. None at all!
As far as our version of the “record”, you made up a bullshit “fact”, gave phony book and page info(ie: “lied”), and swuealed about getting caught in it.
I’m sorry I used a couple extra periods, Sir. I could make up a book reference for you if it makes you feel at home.

So you got caught in a lie.
Let. It. Go.

103. I also feel compelled to think this is you, MontrealMan, being caught in a lie, MontrealMan, because your normal “style, MontrealMan, is absent, MontrealMan. How does that make you feel, MonrtrealMan? Please tell us, MontrealMan.

You seem to have broken character somewhat, and instead of acting as our wise and wisened professor, raining wisdom down upon our ignorant heads like so much golden showers, you seem arsehurt and defensive.

I would expect to be dancing with glee at your misfortune, after months of your online persona being such a dick, but I find it kind of empty and meaningless.

Meh.

104. And I find I feel about you (once again, MontrealMan) telling me how stupid I am, as having the same effect as Paris Hilton telling me how little class I have.
Doesn’t really have any weight to it.

105. wheeliep – To be truthful, I’d kinda hoped that annie was going to prove me wrong…
So when I read “THE ARROGANCE OF IGNORANCE” I thought he was being big, by refering to himself, but alas…no.

So instead, MM you just affirmed my assessment of you.

CASE DISMISSED!

The question, of course, is always what it has been. Will Wheeliep and The Lieutenant provide evidence to support their claim that my “bait” for The Parasite was not intended? Not only will they not, they cannot.

Consider the issue a case at law (judge Monsieur de Montréal presiding):

Judge MM – What I understand is that the two plaintiffs standing before me who go under the names of “Wheeliep” and “The Lieutenant” claim that Monsieur is being duplicitous in maintaining that he was being duplicitous in planting the bait for The Parasite. Is that correct?

Wheeliep & The Lìeutenant – “Yes, m’lud.”

Judge MM: “Gentlemen, do you have any objective evidence to support your charge? By “objective evidence” I mean evidence drawn from the record or from reliable testimony that he was being duplicitous about being duplicitous, if you take my meaning?”

Wheeliep & The Lieutenant – “No, m’lud.

Judge MM- “Then am I to take it that your charge rests solely upon your ability to read Monsieur’s mind, that you have direct insight into both his motives and thought processes?”

Wheeliep & The Lieutenant – “Yes, m’lud.”

Judge MM – “Do you have any evidence to support your claim that you possess such powers?”

Wheeliep & The Lieutenant – “No, m’lud.”

Judge MM – “Gentlemen, you should be ashamed of yourselves. This is the first time in my entire career on the bench that I have encountered such a flagrant violation of the fundamental principles of evidential propriety. What you have done is to willfully slander the good reputation of Monsieur. Do you agree that this is, indeed, true?

Wheeliep & The Lieutenant – “Yes, m’lud.”

Judge MM – “Do you have anything to say in your defence?”

Wheeliep & The Lieutenant – “No, m’lud.”

Judge MM – “I find your actions entirely malevolent and reprehensible. As a consequence,I sentence you to ten years penal servitude. CASE DISMISSED!”

A pleasure as always.

Whatevs. This seems really important to you, that you would go through this whole role playing charade.
Fine. You’re right. I’m wrong.
Now untwist your fucking knickers and come out from under the bed you big pussy.

113. Lord Donairious sounds better. I could have knocked this case out in under 15 minutes plus commercials. When’s lunch?

114. What the fuck, I scanned it. Found this:
(in a powdered wig, as he jerks himself furiously, the Judge says)
===willfully slander the good reputation of Monsieur===

lols
Dude. Do you even know what your reputation is here?!
“Good reputation”.
Facts not in evidence.
You’re pretty funny sometimes.

115. Good Morning Everybody.
Lolz Ivan (again), there might be a ‘love’ for you, on the other side.

Spero che ti senti meglio questa mattina Donk.

To paraphrase Frank Zappa – Your mind is like a parachute, it works best if opened.

But you’ll make a bigger impact if you keep it closed – anon.

Well, at least annie’s trying to be funny, definately not Eddie Yeats quality of story-telling. But hey, Sméagol, you tried. – OR – Are you being serious?

116. Faccio davvero sentire meglio. Grazie a Dio per Google Translate! Lol

This is making me actually want to learn Italian …

117. I haven’t seen this much public self-abuse since the boys down on Ward C all went of fer a coffee one day and ended up in the Pulitzer Fountain on 5th Avenue pullin’ their wieners and puttin’ on a show for the lunch crowd. Drove the office girls nuts!

Did I say nuts?

I think Frere Jacques from Montreal lay off the wine and cheese and start hittin’ the scotch. It might kill that bug up his ass!

ALTERNATIVE SENTENCING

Justice Monsieur de Montréal has reflected on his ten-year sentence for Wheeliep and the Lieutenant and considered that it might be too severe. He wishes them to consider an alternative: Wheeliep and the Lieutenant are to be taken to the Halifax Commons where they are to be placed in the stocks erected for the purpose. They are to remain there for a week, day and night. In the early hours it is expected that the lower orders will emerge, as they usually do, and have sport with the plaintiff’s bodies. Anal chastity belts are recommended. Reply at once.

: Wheeliep (10:00AM) – Makes sarcastic reference to my “‘good reputation’; Facts not in evidence.” See Donk (9:45AM)

: Donk (10:49AM) – Did I ever mention that I lived and taught in Rome? Are you impressed? I taught at L’Instituto Britannico di Roma, Via Quattro Fontane 109. It was just off Via Nazionale, one of the main boulevards of the city. A wonderful time. What a city. Reminded me of Halifax.*

: McMurphy (11:43 AM) – Did you fall into the fountain? Did your wiener get wet
(with water, that is)? Monsieur de Montréal will never “lay off the wine.” He is a connoisseur who has an extensive cellar and has conducted many tastings. If you have any wine questions, do not hesitate to ask. He never drinks scotch.

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

* indicates a joke.

119. … the two bitchers I find the most interesting hate each other.

Oh dearie what a predicament …

Strangely I did laugh at the “joke”, but alas there is only 1 Pepé.

^.^

Serious question though. If one wanted a sweet red wine from the NSLC (aka no obscure shit), what do you suggest?

120. As a matter of fact Pierre my wiener was in the capable hands of the lovely Mrs. Dolores Furberger, wife of the eminent New York psychiatrist Dr. Hymen Furberger. For some reason that I can’t really remember (THANK YOU DR. FURBERGER!) Dolores and I hit off from the start. I had something she needed and she had something I wanted. It doesn’t get any better than that.

WINE ADVICE

: Donk( 5:29PM) – “If one wanted a sweet red wine from the NSLC (aka no obscure shit), what do you suggest?”

Donk, one never, I mean NEVER, drinks sweet red wine!” Oh, Jesus! Of course, you might be referring to rosé which, while red, is not “sweet.” You must educate your palate, Donk.
Who “Pepé?”

: McMurphy (7:17PM) – Your references are obscure. Please clarify.

122. ======: Wheeliep (10:00AM) – Makes sarcastic reference to my “‘good reputation’; Facts not in evidence.” See Donk (9:45AM)=====

I wasn’t using sarcasm. I was being serious. Your “good reputation” here on the board is non-existant, except for having the good taste to bring home several lovely hounds. Your online persona however, has quite a negative rep.
You don’t have a “good reputation” here on the board.
Your rep is as a self-inflated gasbag, a self-appointed teacher to all of us(your lessers), and as someone who generally types A LOT, but says NOT MUCH.

BTW, how is your “noting” of my comment, substance?
It is evidence of you typing much and saying nothing.

123. i enjoy well made sangria mr. fat…fortified wine is best. what a funny term for more alcohol

124. OH lawd MM. For such an intellectual you sure don’t read much. Also ain’t nothing wrong with a sweet red.

125. Donk – have you tried Apothic Red? It’s under $20, so the Monsieur would probably turn up his nose at it, but I tried it recently and it’s a super tasty, easy drinking red. My sis-in-law works at the NSLC, so she always turns me on to new products. Give it a try, I bet you’d dig it.

126. If you want sweet, you can’t go wrong with most blushes….
which is why I stick to Cabernet Sauvignon.
A nice deep, full flavor for this carnivore.

Not into blush? try a light shiraz…
it’ll be strong, but you may like it.

127. Is someone talking wine? Yum.

“sweet” isn’t really a term you use for reds though. When you say sweet red it makes me think of that boones shite. Yack. Rose’s are lovely, but they aren’t exactly white either, NGF, they could be made from blending both red and white wines, or leaving grapes in contact with their skins longer than normal so that it gives them a pink tinge. They’re kind of their own class because of the processing.

Reds are usually dry or even more dry :). (If you’re looking at the sugar code: 1 should be as “sweet” as they ever go, and those are usually plonk). Apothic is a nice red. Other easy drinking reds would be things like italian valpollicella (folonari is particularly nice).

Some Shiraz’s are really, um, “sweet”ish too…. but they can also be harsher and overwhelming. I don’t really like new world ones, but lots of people do. They tend to have overbearing fruitiness – that might be what you’re looking for.

One of my fav wine countries is Spain. I find that they have really interesting wines, they’re full bodied, not too dry, and go well with lots of eats.

But ya, give a rose a try. They’re losing their stigma, and there are some really nice ones out there. They’re fantastic with BBQ!

Wine, Wine, wine! I love it all 😀

128. “Shiraz is the sixth most populous city in Iran and is the capital of Fars Province.” – and what a beautiful place!

But for serious, thanks guys for the suggestions. I didn’t take Zzz for a wine guy. You learn something new every day!

Merci.

WINE ADVICE (II)

:Donairious (May 19, 8:13PM) – “Rose is actually a white wine.”

It seems that I was correct in my assessment of Donairious (see my last post for “Educated But With No Job”) since he is just wrong. Clearly Donairious is unfamiliar with French but this presents no obstacle to him announcing his misconceived views. “Rosé,” Donairious, MEANS “light red” or “pink.” Now, Donairious, I want you to report back on the region of France most notable for its “rosé” wines including the proper varietal used in its production. Start work now.

: Wheeliep (8:59PM) – “Your rep as a self-inflated gasbag, a self-appointed teacher to all of us (your lessers) and as someone who generally types A LOT, but says NOT MUCH.” Wheeliep, can you imagine what all this is doing to my self-esteem? Anyway, was that a sentence? Also a “self-inflated gasbag?” I can understand “self-appointed” but “self-inflated?” How does one inflate oneself? In any case, flattery will get you nowhere, Wheeliep. (I guess he’s still smarting over his recent well-deserved spanking.)

– “BTW, how is your ‘noting’ of my comment, substance.” Use the questionmark where required Wheeliep. But you’re right. My simply “noting” your comment was not, as with the comment itself, substantial. However, as I’m doing now (i.e., explicating your comment and deconstructing its “meaning”), my comment on your comment IS substantial as I’m sure you will agree. To use your abominable style Wheeliep, GIVE.IT.UP.

: Paingirl- Sangria is not “fortified wine.” It is a wine-based (tempranillo) fruit punch which, in its native Spain, is without alcoholic additives. (Maybe you’re talking about “Ripple” or its derivatives, the brown-bagged drink of choice of the street-people in Watts. Avoid sitting down on the curb of Spring Garden Road with your brown bag of Ripple, Paingirl. It don’t look good.)

: Donk (May 20, 12:57AM) – My dear, the fact is that I read a great deal, usually in the area of 50 books a year. (Non-fiction of course.) Anyway, in respect to your comment, “Ain’t nothing wrong with sweet reds:” Well, this is true if you take the word “wrong” in an absolute sense, but I my criticism turned on the maturity of the wine drinker’s palate. In other words, wine drinkers with mature palates would retch at the thought of drinking a sweet red. The only “sweet red” I can think of is Maneshevitz (?) (as in the jingle “Man-O-Man-O-Maneshevitz!”) the Jewish (religious?) wine which I have never tasted (and never intend to).

– Yes, some sweet white wines are palatable (for some). Try a nicely aged Sauternes.

:meOw (1:41AM) – “Apotine Red?” Never heard of it. Is it of Greek (Cypriot? North African) origin? What particular region? What is the grape varietal? How much “under $20?” (i.e., is it a vintage wine and if so, what year?) You must struggle to cite wines properly, meOw. Write back with the correct and full citation. Start work now.

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

130. “Reds are usually dry or even more dry” … yes, just like the gin. My beverage of choice.
Sweet isn’t really a term that’s used … I do understand this, but to me it tastes sweet. I like sweet.

… and I feel ya on the Boones. Makes for good mix though.

… can the next summit include wine? Then I might actually make it out …

… justttttt sayin’

131. “criticism turned on the maturity of the wine drinker’s palate” … my palate just turned 21. Not so mature. Do forgive me good Sir.

132. Excessive fruitiness – the hallmarks of a bad wine and a good sommelier.

Donkster – Bombay Sapphire & tonic with lime on a summer’s evening on my balcony with corbies foraging on the lawn, jet contrails tracing their way across an azure sky and the muted sound of distant gunfire from Highfield is just about as good as it gets

MM – “how does one inflate oneself?” In your case a stout section of surgical tubing running from pie-hole to joy-hole and let basic physics do it’s godly work. The direction of the methane matters not a whit in this particular instance.

133. I had wine once at the office Christmas party. It was rather pleh.

134. Sméagol – just can’t learn, can you.
“bait – “Charles Darwin” – WRONG, that wasn’t it.
Your statement “didn’t even “see” it…had no “reality.” – is so unbelieveably inane and absurd, that my jaw literally dropped.

Now, I’m wondering.
Annie has gone to great lengths to deride my intelligence, says that I’m incapable of any higher though, so on so forth…the list goes on.
So, if I’m such a simplistic dolt, how is that I picked up on a falicy that most people missed? How is smedhead that you know me so well that you were able to tailor make a trap just for me, and no one else?

Answer: I’m not that stupid, you’re not that smart, It wasn’t a ‘trap’.
You were either plainly lying to make youself look better (most likely), or, you watched “What the heck do we know?”, and plagiarized their idea (which is still bullshit).

So, Hugo caught you lying, and you cannot live up to it because of your NPD. Oh what to do? – Refuse to even reply directly, change the subject and attack others for the distraction. Typical ploy of a chickenshit, know-nothing. Have you figured out the difference yet, between ‘John Calvin & Thomas Hobbes’ and a fictional catrtoon strip? No?

Again, you bring your sexuality and kink into this thread, by your graphic imaging of men in restraints and the homoerotic/rape overtones.

I bet the Montremoleman prefers his wine, warm and ‘Golden’.

——————————————————-

Sorry Donk, can’t help you. I like my Whites dry, simple and crisp, Reds full bodied, rich and dry. So I know nothing of sweet rose’s. The staff at “Port of Wines” is quite knowledgable.

Lolz Mel, Tequilla does not like me, I’ll take a shot, it’ll sit in my stomach, take a look around, decide it doesn’t like it there, and leave.

135. I love sangria too painey. Mmm… ultimate patio drink on a hot afternoon!

Once ever 4-5 years I decide I’m going to have tequilla…. it ain’t pretty! I totally forget everything, but apparently I’m quite “funny”. Yikes! best to do that shit in a safe environment with a friend you trust to get you home at night!

136. (MontrealMan, arsecheeks still smarting from Hugo’s catching him in a lie, said

)==========bunch of self-puffery and nothingness, designed to reenforce in MM’s own ego, his position as The Teacher================(

Whatevs. You’ve been exposed, and your repeating over of this imaginary “spanking” you claim to have administered doesn’t make it true.

I think your fragile ego will survive unpopped, MontrealMan.

Wine Advice

: Donk (9:37AM; 9:40AM) -“My palate just turned 21.” Chronological age has little if anything to do with it. The reference to the “maturity” of the wine drinker’s palate refers to his “educated” palate, i.e. whether or not he has background knowledge and experience in wine tasting. The palate, however, is just the third element in wine tasting, the first being the sight (determines the age of the wine by colour, from purple to brick), the nose (the most important element, one which determines the “bouquet” of the wine – that mixture of smells which dominate and those present only as “notes – and finally the palate to determine the balance of acids and tannins (the “tannins refer to the “used tea bag effect” in the mouth.)

: Ivan Hoe (9:51AM)- Another booze drinker. But thanks anyway for the advice, Hoe.

: Orgasmatron (9:58AM) – Seek out a better class of office.

: Melectric (10:12AM) – Try to stay on topic.

: Paingirl (11:26AM) – Once can, of course, make sangria with other kinds of wine than the tempranillo grape. But, if one wants to be authentic, tempranillo is the way to go. By the way, “Rioja” is a region of Spain, not a grape varietal as your author seems to suppose. The grape varietal found in Rioja is, wait for it, the tempranillo. Did I mention that I taught and lived in Spain?

: Unforgiven (2:07PM) – On the contrary, “chilled red” is quite proper, but it depends on the varietal. The “grenache” varietal found in Provence, for example, certainly takes some chilling, but not palate-paralyzingly so (i.e., about 16 degrees).

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

138. i had forgotten that monsieur, it must be all that ripple i’ve been swilling^^

139. I don’t drink, at all, but when I’m out on a date with a gal, and she has red wine, I love to smell it, and take a small mouthful. I can really appreciate the complexity of the flavour and the textures. It feels analygous to a symphony, with a distinct shape from the overture to the ending, but in the mouf’.

White wine is fun to sample too, but I love the richness of red.
Do you want *more* of the tannen-effect, or less? I don’t enjoy when it feels like my tongue has a sweater on from tannen, but I like all the sensations and senses of red wine.

I can imagine a wone tasting course would be educational and fun to take.

140. You forgot “legs”, the longer and higher the wine clings to your glass after a swirl the better. So when someone says that the wine has “great legs”, it’s a sign of a decent wine.

Sorry annie, the nose is not the most important aspect of the wine, it is important yes, but not a definative indicaton of the quality of the wine, .

The most important thing about a wine is; do you like it?

I’ve had wines who’s nose was excellent but tasted like gasoline (from an Opimian society), and I’ve had wines that smelt like straw, but tasted great.

It’s always fun to have a “blind tasting” in a group of six or seven. It adds
competition to the proceedings. It’s not as simple as it looks since the presenter must also be “in the dark.” If anyone is interested, I can tell how to set it up.

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

142. wheeliep – Tannin & legs, not sure but I don’t think so. I can tell you that lots of legs do not mean lots of tannin.
Tannin usually will ‘soften” with age.

Got this on-line “A moderate amount of alcohol in wine adds “sweetness” to the taste. If the alcohol is too high and out of balance with the tannin and fruit, then the wine will feel hot in your mouth and difficult to drink.”

I also forgot to mention acouple of things, the ‘finish’ or aftertaste. You’re looking for a long, pleasant aftertaste, with a nice balance of flavours.
And, (truth) ths glass that you’re drinking out of, makes a difference in the taste and texture of the wine. The first time I heard that I was thinking BS, but I tried the same bottle of wine in several different glasses, and it made a considerable difference. I seem to prefer cut crystal for my reds 🙂

Donk – Warm beer, cold pizza, and a few deep breaths from an oxygen mask, will fix you right up. If that doesn’t work, try more gin 😉

143. ..i don’t drink anymore..still i never played the wine “game “…like everything is cabs and chards now..whatever happened to ie: chablis?…

145. i just bought some nice cold honey brown sleeman’s. everything is open sunday and monday anyhoo

146. : Monsieur de Montreal (9:36AM) – “”Apotine Red?” Never heard of it.” Poor Monsieur, I see you are muddling along as usual. For a self-professed intellectual, quite a lot of conversation here seems to go over your head. While I’m loath to challenge your self-perception of superiority (for I fear you are perhaps a bit “emotionally fragile”), from an anthropological perspective, I find your methods of examining the Underclass a bit lacking. You must struggle to read my comments carefully, and when quoting me, please strive for accuracy.

The wine is called APOTHIC Red, taken from ‘Apotheca’, the Latin word for a particular type of wine-pantry. It’s made the rounds of North American wine festivals, and it’s generally quite popular, so reviews abound. I assume that, despite your ignorance of the language and culture of the Underclass, you do know what “Google it” means, and thus I implore you do so.

WINE ADVICE (IV)

:martym ((:20AM) – Wants us to know that he “never played the wine game.” That’s good, because he would have lost. Get this: “like everything is cabs and chards now – whatever happened to i.e. Chablis?” Well, martym, nothing ever happened to Chablis since it is the northernmost region of the Burgundy appellation and, – wait for it martym -is made from the um, Chardonnay grape. What a wanker. Distinguish grape varietals from wine regions you buffoon.

– (12:56PM) – “eff the wannabe sommeliers.” Typical redneck – knows nothing about amything but it never prevents him from blowing his mouth off. Eff you, martym.

(By the way, Paingirl, chianti is no longer considered “plonk.” Since 1996 the best producers in the Chianti DOC have put out “Super Tuscans” made from 100% sangiovese and costing in the $100 range. And the regular Chianti is very good as well.) Don’t let the buffoon suck you back into the Ripple scene!

: meOw (5:17PM) – Yes, my note-taking leaves a lot to be desired and so I muffed the name of the wine. But, as I originally asked, can you give the full citation? (See my scoring sheet for details, i.e. name of wine, producer, vintage, region in which it is produced, price.) Where are these reviews? What periodicals? Dates? Give details, meOw!

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

148. ..yes mm i would have lost..cos i i couldn’t distinguish grape varietals from regions etc. etc. and do you won’t to know why i don’t know …cos believe me i toiled with some michellan types..i left it to smarmy a-holes to out wine each other whilst i did my thing with the pans 🙂

149. ps: i left the wine pairings in the capable hands of Tony Aspler(sommelier/consultant) in an example of my redneck viddle shacks ooooweee 🙂

– Posted by Hugo Phurst Interwebz Tough-guy on May 20, 2011 at 4:57 PM

No. Legs are the columns of liquid that appear to stand after swirling the liquid against the container wall. They are an indication of the alcohol and sugar content and is a fascinating study of surface tension and adhesion vs cohesion. They are not an indication of the quality of the wine, it could still taste like shit. (study the effect in whiskeys and liqueurs to get a better idea of what it really indicates)

WINE ADVICE (V)

: meOw (May 21, 3:17PM) – I took your advice and Googled “Apothic” as well as searching the SAQ website. A hit for both. A California red based on a syrah, zinfandel and merlot blend. I do wonder about blends with more than two varietals but there you go. Anyway, the SAQ website has it the 2009 as a “dry, medium-bodied and fruity red which displays a simple and intense nose. On the palate, its refreshing scidity, smooth tannins,, and full-bodied texture precede a long finish.” Sounds good. I think I’ll try a bottle. While sipping it, I’ll be thinking of you.

I was interested in your comment “For a self-professed intellectual, quite a lot of conversation here seems to go over your head.” I see no problem here. Contrast the word “intellectual” with the phrase “conversation here” – the two are mutually exclusive – so the “problem” simply dissolves.

I was also very interested in your claim that I am “emotionally fragile.” I am ready – indeed I look forward – to your psychiatric ministrations. Will it be necessary to recline on your couch? Should I dress comfortably?

: martym (9:52PM; 10:09PM) – Do you mean “Michelin?” What did you do with the “pans?” Does it relate to your “redneck viddle shacks?” Are you Polish?

: randometc.etc. (May 22, 8:16AM) – Very eloquent. I assume you are referring to Donairious as the “fucking nigger” and not me. I didn’t realize that he had his “doctorate in niggerdom.” What would that entail? Do you know the title of his thesis? Was it published?

(8:34AM) – Random, you are absolutely correct. The “legs” left on the wine glass after swirling have no relation to the quality of the wine as the “Parasite” maintained. They indicate only its viscosity (glycerine content) which indicates its alcoholic strength.

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

The topic is wine, not cuisine, you mutt.

– (9:40PM) – a “rondo?” Is that a cooking term, you cretin?

: Paingirl (12:14PM) – “my red seal has your back marty.” Is that a (well-deserved) threat? Is your red seal vicious? Go get him, Red!

155. I like Paderno pans.

The number one caution I give anyone switching to half-decent pans is to watch the heat.

Good pans conduct it so much better that my first use of them led to a huge billowing cloud of olive oil smoking me out of my place.

156. i have paderno and ikea pans but lately i’ve been buying my equipment at restaurant supply stores. avoid anything with plastic handles

157. My dad used to buy his oven mitts at the restaurant supply store close to kempt before he retired. I’ve always been meaning to go by there and pick some up because I have sensitive skin and a low tolerance for pain from heat and regular oven mitts just don’t cut the mustard (I can’t even do dishes at a high enough temp — I have to use my dishwasher) but I haven’t gotten around it.

I love love LOVE Paderno. My favorite time(s) of the year is their big sale at the forum and they usually have a kick ass sale in store at some point. Last sale about a month back they had an $800 set on sale for $250. 🙂

I’m a sucker for quality kitchen stuff and when it comes to cooking the heavier the better — heavy pots and cooking utensils = <3

158. Big Eric’s — that’s the one 🙂

You know what I *do* miss from my days at home in the valley? My dad’s HUGE industrial convection oven. That thing was GREAT for baking the perfect batch of cookies and the perfect pan of homemade pizza. 🙂

You honestly can’t beat the professional cooking equipment.

159. yea russell’s are coast to coast and #1 for good reason…i got a coat at big eric’s..dutch village road?

160. I want this set:

http://www.paderno.com/images/large_4b72ba…

It’s the 16 piece gourmet set. It was on sale for $265 with tax last month, but I didn’t have the cash at the time to get it (only a 4 day sale). *lesigh*

The pro gourmet was also on sale for the same price:

http://www.paderno.com/images/large_4d654f…

I suppose I can’t decide which one I like better. Either would be great though! I also want the cooking utensils. 🙂

They’ll be on sale again though and the sale at the forum should be coming up! 🙂

161. as long as you have a couple of big pots for lobbies and stock you should be good…avoid plastic colanders too

162. Oldhand is back and with a brand new attitude! And with that new attitude is blatantly racist remarks because Donairious is of Black and Jewish and Puerto Rican descent. It’s okay though since he’s an Uncle Tom named Drew.

And MM is simply being a hater because ol’ NGF is right as usual and he is wrong once again. It’s okay though as he’s still my brother.

I love calling these guys’ bluffs though. Just a lovely way to cap off a lovely long weekend. They’re just a couple of Anti-Semites anyway.

163. they absorb odours and melt^^were those the two? i don’t find them as sturdy either

164. didn’t realize they absorb odours…
I was thinking more that straining hot things in them might release BPA’s like the old Nalgene bottle scare of ’03

the melting was much more obvious, yes.

165. Poor nalgene 🙁 I had to retire my super awesome pink one from 2000 that had loads of sentimental value. It made me a sad kitty 🙁

Plastic kitchen stuff DOES melt — often in the dishwasher, in fact. I bought a cheap set a few years back when I first moved out to tide me over and every single one managed to get thrown around by the dishwasher water pressure and end up on the element and burning no matter where I put them on the racks. THAT sure smelled nice.

I love using wooden spoons to cook, but I’m too afraid of having them absorb bacteria to get any. Plus you can’t throw the fuckers in the dishwasher and my mottos is: if it ain’t dishwasher safe, I ain’t buying it! (except my grandmother and mother’s royal doulton sets — I have no problem handwashing those — considering they’re over $300/place setting and delisted so I can’t get any more *cry*).

Hay guys, can we talk about expensive dishes now? Pleeeeeease?

166. Orrrrrrrrr we could talk about the ant infestation in my office!

A ‘work order’ was put in on Thursday and jack shit’s been done thus far. They’re crawling out of my keyboard, they’re all over my desk, and THEY’RE CRAWLING ALL OVER ME.

But I get to wait till fuck knows when for the work order to get processed or whatever.

If no one shows up today to spray, I’m bringing in a can of raid and I don’t give two shits who has a problem with it — no one else has ants CRAWLING ALL OVER THEM!

I’m spending more time killing ants than getting anything done. *grrrface*

This probably could’ve been a bitch in itself but whateves.

167. “CRAWLING ALL OVER THEM” I read ants then that and thought your solution was to crawl all over the ants.

Lolers

168. I was yard-sailing out West one year, and bought a full setting for 16 places for 40 bucks! Gravy boat, tureen, everything as well. Frigging boxes of it

I price it out online comes to about 15,000!!!!

I broke 3 pieces eating over the sink….

169. WINE TASTING – APOTHIC RED 2009.

As I indicated in my post of May 22 (11:37AM) in response to meOw’s of May 21, I planned to buy a bottle of Apothic Red (“Winemaker’s Blend”, Apothic Wines, Modesto, California, 13% Alcohol, $15.65). I did this and conducted a brief tasting, the results of which I hereby append:

The Winery notes specify neither the year of its establishment so previous vintages against which the 2009 might be assessed are lacking nor the relative percentages of the three varietals which make it up, i.e., zinfandel, syrah and merlot, which makes it difficult to know what to look for as dominant markers as opposed to those present only as notes. The zinfandel can be an ambiguous varietal, sometimes big and juicy or insipid and sweetish; the American syrah must be distinguished from its French cousin (the famed wines of the Rhone valley) as well as from the Shiraz, its Australian cousin; and finally the California merlot which is usually added for its soft, juicy quality but is generally considered a nondescript varietal by itself. So the Apothic would be very difficult to identify in a blind tasting. Anyway, here are my notes:

A. SIGHT

1. Colour – The wine is obviously still very young as it shades from purple to dark opaque. On sight alone one wonders if it is still too young to taste.

2. Viscosity – It has marked legs as well as a definite “ring” around the glass indicating substantial alcohol content. Interestingly, in addition to the legs, there are many small transluscent granules found on the glass as the wine is depleted indicating either greater glycerine content or possibly a feature of the sweetish zinfandel grape.

Mark: 4/5 points

B. NOSE

In general terms the Apothic was “closed,” confirming its lack of maturity. There were some fruit with floral scents which appeared after a rest period but which were difficult to identify. The wine was still “dumb.” Some bracken with coffee/tobacco notes were noted. There was a fairly strong scent of alcohol which confirms its 13% alcohol content, in other words a fairly potent wine. The Bouquet appeared elusive with alcohol/bracken over cassis. It may blossom after resting for a day or so.

Mark: 7/10

C. PALATE

The Apothic had a big mouthfeel, large and chewy. While the acids were refreshing without being sharp, the tannins were excessively drying indicating, once again, a hearty but immature wine. In desparate need of ageing (or “aging” if you prefer the American script). Other than the tannins, the balance of acids and fruit was good.

Mark: 3/5

TOTAL SCORE: 14/20

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

170. It sounds like my Wine Tasting Notes did it for you Donk. Do you want to share your sensations? Did you have to seek relief?

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

171. Oh Hugo, WOWOWO I love this lady. I didn’t know who it was and I listened to some stuff. <3 it.

Um is Shaking a song of hers … I’m going to say no and guess it was actual shaking? Lol, helppp.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_2xTSfEVMM I like this one.

While we’re on it … know who Melody Gardot is? Seriously one of the best things America ever did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Eb651s_o1Q… I sing to this (yes I fancy myself a singer sometimes ^.^)

172. Hey Donk, real song from her days with the 80’s band, ‘Infidels’.

Thanks for the link, Melody sure does have a sweet voice, makes me want to take a bath :).

So….where/when can I hear you sing?

173. In the style of PG … ✓✓✓✓✓✓

Next summit mayhaps? or other “worthy” event.

😀

174. Oooh this is an excuse to buy new shoes!

Pause … karaoke … means I might actually have to sing … lolz. Can’t ce soir though, I go to the cinema late show of The Hangover (oh I’m sooo excited!)

Next weekend? or whenever really …

Could be an excellent idea for a summit!

175. no zedman, i found them in my size. the white ones looked even more clown-like

176. I love the ferrari pumas! That’s so funny. When I was in venice 5 years ago, I almost bought some… but they were 150 euros. You couldn’t get them in North America at that point. Now I see them often and I really should buy some 😀

177. Hi PK, maybe they changed things there in the last year or two. I was at a Minglewood show there, and the karaoke was going strong, probably 40 people.

Until next time Donk.

The only problem with the Fleet Club is the kitchen hours, but definately plenty of room, parking, inexpensive drinks, wheelchair accessable…etc.

178. APOTHIC UPDATE

Reading The Gazette’s wine columnist (Bill Zacharkiw) this morning I discover a reference to “Apothic Red,” the wine for which I gave my tasting notes (May 26, 9:10AM). Can you believe it?

Bill was talking about the effect different oak barrels have on wines. He prefers only very light oak notes as opposed to a vanilla blast. He commented on a South African called “Coffee and Chocolate” which is made by submerging specially toasted oak staves into the wine with the result that it “really does taste like coffee and chocolate.” It is very popular with young people there who are just starting to drink wine. But it was not to Bill’s taste. “I couldn’t wait,” he writes, “to get it out of my mouth.” He then continued:

“Recently, Gallo from California released a new wine to our market called Apothic, which is in a similar vein. I couldn’t find any information about how the wine is made – the website simply says ‘it is a truly unique wine experience’ – but there is something weird going on there. And I agree that it is unique.” (Bill was being sarcastic.)

I never found it as bad as Bill but I agree that the winery notes were unhelpful which is unusual for Gallo (for which I could find no reference on the label or in the winery notes.)

Anyway, just a footnote: I appear on The Gazette’s Opinion Page of the same date. Another brilliant analysis. My God, they just keep on coming.

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

179. Dear Monsieur; I just took a shot of the cheapest tequila out of a dollar store shot glass and chased it with grape juice all while thinking of you <3

180. RSVPs

: just melectric (12:14AM) – The “cheapest tequila?” A “dollar store shot glass?” “grape juice?” This does not sound too flattering, Mel. Maybe it was the late hour. However, it might be redeemed by your thoughts. What were you thinking about when you were thinking about me, Mel? Was it, um, you know, exciting? Tell me, Mel. You may breathe heavily, if you like.

A pleasure as always.

Cheerio!

181. Haha, it was a Nofunswick (New Brunswick) dollar store shot glass :P.

I thought about you Monsieur because tequila and grape juice is like all the rage in France. It’s like a type of wine. You haven’t heard of it? I thought you would have….

182. RSVPs

: Donk (May 29, 11:27AM)- “MM has a weird sense of humour. It’s great.”

Yes, Donk, many have said that. I see it as being just another fascinating facet of my multi-domensional personality. On the other hand, I may not have been kidding when I spoke of Mel’s “heavy breathing”… (heh, heh)

: Melectric (2:41PM) – “I thought of you Monsieur because tequila and grape juice is like all the rage in France.”

What part of France did you have in mind, Mel? Maybe the “bidonvilles” around Paris? There’s a lot of “rage” going on there, Mel, but I never thought of it being caused by tequila and grape juice. But there you go. Learn something new every day. Now, about your “heavy breathing” … (heh, heh, heh)

A pleasure as always.

Cheeio!
