Apathy and idiocy must be rampant in departments other than murder investigation if they haven’t caught the sleep watcher yet. It’s been two years. Police budgets INCREASE every year. What have they done? They’ve released four sketches of dude’s face, one of which is here (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/nova-scotia/story/2010/10/13/ns-sleep-watcher-sketch.html), and they’ve told us to keep your windows and doors locked (victim blaming).
Where are the sting operations? Where is the ‘intelligence’? Hey coppers: Why aren’t you keeping me safe from a perverted rapist? He’s touching women now. He could end up in my bedroom next. I can’t be absolutely sure my roommates will always remember to lock our doors and windows, and really, that’s not our job! We deserve to feel fucking safe when we fall asleep!
So here’s what I propose: Don’t be victims, sisters! Act like you’re part of a sting operation, even if the police didn’t care about you enough to set one up. Keep a weapon on your bedside table, next to your phone (to call those asshole detectives AFTER this fucker appears in your house). Use the weapon (self defense). Buy some acrylic or oil paint in a bright colour and mark his clothes with it before he gets away so he can be better identified if cops pick him up around your hood. Keep a flash camera nearby and use it on his face.
After all this, and after giving a police report, call the media. Call a reporter you trust to keep your name off the record. The police will likely tell you to stay silent, but why should your trust them when their shoddy detective work allowed a rapist to enter your apartment? They don’t release enough details. The public needs to know more. If you tell your story to a reporter, they’ll spread significant details far and wide so this fucker can be caught — not by the police but by people like you and me.
If others can’t catch him, at least the women he’s preying on can dissuade him from ever doing this again. Make him easy to identify and aim low. —Sting

I’m not defending the police or trying to be negative with you OP, but it doesn’t make sense to me for them to release information about what they plan to do to catch the guy….because he can probably read too.
Um…It is YOUR job to lock YOUR windows and doors. Not saying this guy shouldn’t have been caught already and not putting blame on the victims, at all, but c’mon!! No matter where you live, you should be doing this anyway!
What would this proposed “sting operation” that you seem so confident about look like anyway? Put a female police officer undercover in a random bedroom somewhere in the city and hope that the sleepwatcher happens to strike there that night?
I agree that they should’ve caught this guy by now too, but honestly, you watch too much TV.

Locking your doors and windows isn’t anybodys job but your own. Lots of oven cleaners contain sodium hydroxide, none of this ‘temporary” blindness that comes from pepper spray. Where is the ‘intelligence’? What’s your clearance?

And what about the responsibility of the public? You’re right there are four police sketches of the perpretator, the first being about tow years old and amazingly not one member of the public have gone to the police and said this looks like John Doe. Either the victims made mistakes in their descriptions (this can happen due to fear and stress) or people are protecting the perp.
I’d also love to hear how your supposed sting operation would work. Sting operations are used when the subject is known or the place of operation is the same.
Calvin you seem to be on the cops at Tiimmies kick. So where and when and for how long are the cops at timmies? I’ve seen them come in get a coffee and leave or gasp come in have a coffee then leave just like the thousands of people who do during their work day. I have not seen them in there for hours at a time like you are suggesting.

One reason the sketches are diferent, might be, is that when a person wakes from a deep sleep, their perception is not that good. And on that thougt OB, what happens when you mistakenly bash your roommates’ head in?

I don’t understand why everyone’s saying 2 years. Is there a NEW sleepwatcher; one who took over from whomever started it back in the summer of 2004? That was my last year living in halifax and 8 remember it very clearly.

OP is clearly not a police officer, because yes, suggesting a sting is like assuming there will be DNA left behind at every crime scene. not gonna happen. but the threat of this sleep stalker is real. the fact that he is getting more comfortable in approaching his victims and now touching them (which in itself is sexual harassment) is real and can not and should not be ignored. yes, we all need to lock our doors. but at the same time we all need to acknowledge the serious threat this person poses to your mother, sisters, daughters, cousins. i say that because the way you all comment is like you don’t care about what happens to people until it happens to someone you know. as a community, instead of playing the blame game, pointing fingers and making fun of serious issues, we should be working together to fill the gaps left by the hrp and our government to make halifax a safe a supportive place to live.
truthfirst, did you get the drift of what i actually wrote? i said it could be anybody, or maybe not even the same one all the time. have you not heard of copycats? yes, it is damn serious, and this perv should be nailed to the wall, when or if caught. in the meantime, lock your fucking doors and windows, it isn’t summer anymore, so there is no need to get all the lovery fresh air. the pics i have seen of this person/s leave a lot to be desired, maybe, like i said because of just being awoken from a sleep. someone has to keep their eyes and ears open, there is bound to be bragging by someone, someplace.
