Just because they’re not using it when you’re there, doesn’t mean they’re not using it.
I’m disabled. 80% of the time, I’m absolutely fine and use regular parking. 10-20% of the time, I find it hard to walk. I have a spinal illness whose symptoms aren’t chronic but acute.
The reason there is priority parking is the same reason there is priority seating on the bus. Because every lazy asshole (no offense op….) would park as close as possible to where they’re going. Leaving those who ARE disabled hobbling across a long and sometimes treacherous parking lot.
Someday op.. you’ll get old. I was unlucky. This started for me when i was 14. I didn’t get a chance to not Get It. There was no period of able-bodied oblivion for me. I have lived with this forever. But someday.. you people bitching about how we’re not constantly using our parking spaces will need one yourself. And some able bodied asshole will take it without a permit and likely get away with it.
I wonder op.. when that time comes.. if you’ll agree with his actions or if you’ll feel differently.
Cripes, all we want is to be able to live normal lives when we find it hard to. This is here to help us do that. So shut up and be grateful that you CAN walk across a parking lot 100% of the time. That won’t last forever. Enjoy it now.

If you’ll notice, dickhead (OB), these spots tend to be extra wide to help accommodate walkers and chairs and transfer equipment. Have YOU ever tried to get around when you’re not very mobile?
I’ll bet my cat that you’d be the first one to bitch when someone takes up two spots to accommodate their chairs, walkers and transfer equipment, too!
And for the record, my dad has a disabled parking decal and it can be quite hard to find a spot at times in the accessible parking.

If all the disabled parking spots are taken that means that there are not enough. There will always be empty disabled parking, businesses are required to have more than necessary, so that those who need to park close can even when it is very busy.
Also did you ever think that it is a bit more complicated for some disabled people to get out and about when ever they feel like it? So they might only make a trip to the store once or twice a month.

What I think is awesome are the senior spots at Walmart on Mumford. I certainly don’t mind walking a few extra feet if a senior can have an easier time getting to and from the store.
I’ve seen quite a few younger people (20s/30s) parking in those spots. On all occasions I’ve actually yelled at them all “YOU MUST BE THE YOUNGEST LOOKING SENIOR ON THE PLANET!”
Shaming people who do shitty things like that usually works. I do it to line cutters too (everyone’s thinking it…. but I actually DO it).
The silly ones are the pink mommy ones. Not to mention I saw spots near a store for eco/electrical cars.

Getting old can happen virtually overnight. When I turned 56, after a lifetime of daily exercise, I suddenly couldn’t walk a block. Before I knew it, I was told I needed two fucking knee replacements and was too young to get the surgery! So, thanks to the N.S. health care system, I am hobbled until I’m considered old enough to deserve these replacements.

Ah PK you bring up an excellent point. I’ve never had to use a chair (with the exception of two days following surgery) so _I_ don’t even think that, yes, there need to be huge spaces for the chair lifts, chairs etc..

See Locke refused to use the disabled parking and as a result, got stuck outside his car. Luckily Hurley was there to help and moved his Hummer and… well if you’ve seen it you know the rest. Actually turned out to be the best thing ever for both of them. BUT.. my point remains that life is not Lost and it won’t always be Hurley fencing you in.
Totally valid point, OB! Anyone that is capable of moving around the large distances inside a big box store or grocery store does not need to park so close to the door.
In some cases, not crossing the parking lot is part of the reason why they need the blue sticker in the first place.
If they need extra space next to their vehicle, they can do what drivers do with pick up trucks…park them far away from the door.
We should make the spots 15min parking or handycap parking. This way, it would be no different than a handycap toilet stall, ie everyone is allowed to use it.
It’s not just distance to the door. I need the bigger space so my car door can open all the way, or I’m in danger of wiping out and breaking, say, a pelvis, which would put me in the hospital for months and fuck up my life.
Does it *really* grind your gears that much, that some people need help with specific spaces?
Maybe the problem is in you and how you feel about those less able than you.

I don’t agree its ok yelling at someone in their 20’s and 30’s who is parked in a handicapped or senior parking spots just because they look young and healthy. If they have a handicapped sign then it shouldn’t be a issue. Pretty Kitty shouldn’t judge. I don’t agree with young people parked in senior spots unless there is a good reason. Instead of belittling that person first find out the reason they are parked there in the first place. Might actually have a legit excuse. Just because a person doesn’t look like they are sick doesn’t mean they aren’t as sick as the rest of the people who park in those spots. I don’t look sick from the outside but physically it is a daily struggle at times. If someone like Pretty Kitty yelled at someone like me getting out of a vehicle in a handicapped spot you bet I will give you a piece of my mind and flip the bird at you.
Remember the blue spots are for handicapped, not seniors, though some seniors can be handicapped.
If you have concerns, tell the store management so they can call the police to determined if the parker is legitimate.
The senior parking is for seniors, not 20-30 somethings. Period.
If they are sick, they can get a accessible parking permit. I never judge those using accessible parking with a decal/plate because you can’t tell what the deal is (there’s a spot on the app for illnesses such as heart and lung disorders, so it’s not just those in wheelchairs!).
If they don’t qualify for that (you can get temp decals for acute injuries and illnesses), and you’re not a senior, stay out of those spots and show a little respect.

Also: accessible parking is available at more places then big box stores (what about hospitals and drs offices and drugstores?) and many will use a wheel chair or scooter provided by the store to get around in larger stores and are pushed by shopping companions. I wish everyone with ob and gv’s shitty opinion of this could spend just one day in the shoes of someone with mobility issues. From being treated like a bother in public (wouldnt want to slow anyone down from being all important and in a hurry!) to having to deal with the ACTUAL disability, it’s no picnic.
Also: to those criticizing the size of some of the disabled: ever think they’re heavier BECAUSE they are sick or have mobility impairments and can’t exercise?

I referred to a spot at the mumford walmart marked ‘senior’ in a revious post that isn’t an accessible parking spot. It has a white square and is similar to the preggo parking. I am fully aware that the blue parking spots require a decal and are different than the senior courtesy spot.

And as to what PK said earlier: when you fuck up your back, you can put on a fuckload of weight. I have a “pre existing condition”, but when I pinched a nerve in my neck that caused left arm weakness 3 years ago, my transfers sucked and I stopped driving for 2 1/2 years. Those transfers apparently made my core(despite a spinal cord injury) strong as hell. The temp arm weakness lead to loss of core strength lead to a back muscle spasm lead to putting on a bunch of weight. I’m only getting it straightened out now.
Some of us are fat because of a disability or impairment that negates rigorous activity.
And anyone who thinks the blue spots aren’t needed should try needing them- you’ll eat your shitty words.
