It’s the same mentality of the soccer hooligans, (i.e. NONE!) Completely senseless and unacceptable. I read an article where they actually asked a guy who had just lit a garbage can on fire, why he did it? His answer was as assanine as his actions..“This is releasing tension, man. What else are you going to do when you lose the Stanley Cup? You riot.” WTF?? Releasing tension? So terrorizing a city core, vandalizing property, overturning and burning vehicles, throwing bottles etc at police, causing serious bodily harm to someone, embarrassing, not only your city but your entire fucking country is releasing tension?? Jesus H. Christ! You want to release tension, go home and whack off ya jackwagon! WTF is wrong with people?? “What else are you going to do when your team loses the Stanley Cup?” Ohh, I dunno, how about not acting like a complete and utter brainless fuckwad! How about that! This shit pisses me off to no end. And to give an answer like this obvious model citizen did just adds gasoline to the flames. (no pun intended) I can understand being disappointed that your team lost. I get it. I can understand being upset or even angry.But ffs…you don’t turn to this shit! IT’S A FUCKING HOCKEY GAME!! The actions by these few wastes of skin has made Canada a virtual laughing stock for the rest of the world. This was in the Toronto Sun: “The U.K. Daily Mail ran its Vancouver riot story beneath coverage of the situation in Greece, where thousands took to the streets on Wednesday to protest proposed $40.5 billion in cuts demanded by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund to bail the country out of its massive debt.
Under the Greece coverage, the Mail posted the headline “…meanwhile in Canada – somebody lost an ice hockey match to the Americans.”
When you click on the story, the headline becomes: “No, it is not another G20 protest – somebody won an ice hockey match (Well, it was the Stanley Cup and Vancouver lost at home).” I am absolutely incensed by this and I hope that if they ever do catch those responsible, (highly unlikely given the overwhelming amount of people involved), that they get made an example out of. Send them to prison where I guaruntee you they have a much different way of relieving tension. Assholes!

How do you propose they name it then, More? The “Almost-Every-Country-in-the-World-Cup”? Or maybe just list every country that particpates and put the word “Cup” at the end? (Should we list these countries alphabetically or according to population?) I think the reason it’s called the World Cup is because football, (soccer to the great un-washed), is played, followed, loved and obsessed over by pretty much the entire world. I would go so far as to call it the Universal sport. You go to any dirt-poor third world developing country in the world and what do you see the kids, (and adults), doing for fun and activity? Playing football. Sure, the ball may just be a piece of scrap garbage scrounged from somewhere and the goal posts are no more than maybe a pile of stones on the ground to delineate the net but it’s still football. And that’s the beauty of it. You don’t need equipment. You can McGyver together everything you require. The rules are few and simple and anyone, regardless of size, gender, age, ability, etc can play. Now, I don’t follow football, myself. I find it to be just a tad slow for my taste but I definately respect it and understand just how much of an impact it has on the world community. Like I said, it truly is a universal sport. Hmmm…maybe they should call it the Universal Cup.

I bet it was those 400 Tamils that illegally entered Canada last year that started it all. After all, the Tamils in Toronto protested/rioted 2 years ago and shut down a major highway around Toronto.

You completely missed my point, More. I suggested name “Universal” to impart the fact that the game is “Universally” played around the world, (see definiton), not LITERALLY played around the universe as in “Milky Way vs. Andromeda”. And while it may not be obsessed over to the same extent here as to most other countries, I would argue that there is still a sizeable group of people in the North American continent who obsess over soccer.
As for your suggestion that sailing is the only sport to have the right to the name “World Cup”, yes, they may sail all over the world, but not every country in the world participates in sailing, which was your original argument in your previous post. You’re kind of contrdicting yourself IMO.
In all fairness, maybe International Cup IS more accurate than World Cup, but my argument is that you would be hard pressed to find somewhere in this World that does not know what football (soccer) is. It’s “Universally” recognized around the “World” (redundant, I know). Don’t take everything so literal.
