parking tickets!
Seriously, as of this school year (starting in september) the parking tickets around Saint mary’s are 50 DOLLARS EACH! These have gone up from 15 dollars, which was acceptable for a student to pay. Is this how they’re collecting student loans back? If

Have you thought about buying a parking pass? Not sure what they go for now, but after getting 3-4 tickets, that’d probably pay for a parking pass right there. If you’re a “poor” student, how do you afford the car and everything that goes with it (gas, insurance, etc)? You know how much parking tickets are going to cost you so stop complaining. It’s not like tickets magically appear on your windshield for no reason. Save yourself some $$ and pay for a parking pass, or get back to your car on time and feed the meter. Last resort is you could always take the bus or even walk.
If you don’t mind a short walk, there’s the all day lot at the old Halifax Infirmary site on Queen Street – $7 a day – a real bargain in downtown Hfx.

Must be nice to be a “poor student” driving around in a car dropping $15 here and there on parking tickets.Just imagine, 2 hours over your limit and you get a ticket. Do you expect to get your reservation at a restaurant when you arrive the day after??? Oh that’s right, you’re a poor student.
Maybe you shouldn’t park illegally. Then the problem is solved. The fact that you wrote this with a tinge of victimhood is unbelievable.

He didn’t say 2 hours over the limit…get your bitch comments straight if you’re going to bitch. You people sound like you work for the fucking university the way your sticking up for their right to fine people this ludicrous amount of fucking money…it’s bullshit. I live downtown and it’s hard to find parking and they rape you if you can’t find a meter or if you go over your time allowed, even if it is by a minute. Just another cash grab for the fucking man, and in this case, SMU.
What a non-problem. Park yer car in an area of town where there’s no parking restrictions, then spring a couple of toonies on a bus. Works for me.
Jasen, thanks for pointing out my error so diplomatically. Unlike some people who post in here I have no problem admitting I made a mistake. I don’t think it drastically changes the sentiment of my post as I certainly have little empathy for this person.Alex is 100% correct in his post. The “tinge of victimhood is unbelievable.”
As a former SMU student I agree. When I was there two years ago, the parking tickets were $15. The fact that they’ve suddenly increased them to $50 is crazy. A parking pass at SMU is some ridiculous amount of money and when I checked there was a waiting list. I used to go out between classes and move my car the problem is now that apparently they use GPS and if your car is on the same block as it was then you get a ticket. The other problem. Classes at SMU are 1 hour and 15 minutes with 15 minute breaks in between. So either you go out and move your car to a new block between each class or you risk being 2 and a half hours and getting a ticket. $15 wasn’t so bad, if you happened to go over one day or not be able to get out and move your car for whatever reason at least you didn’t break the bank trying to pay a ticket. $50 is crazy!What I find funny though is that two weeks ago I was actually down at SMU and got a parking ticket and it was only $25…where did you park to get a $50 ticket?
I can’t see how they can use GPS to give you a ticket unless your car somehow has been slapped with a GPS tracking device courtesy of the city. Even then, GPS is only accurate up to a couple of metres. That’s not good enough since if you moved your car, it can’t possibly be in the same spot to give you a ticket.What if you got in your car and drove around the block only to find that your spot hadn’t been taken, so you park there again. How would GPS prove that you hadn’t moved your car? Apparently means that it’s a rumour. Since the facts shoot that rumour down, I would highly doubt the city would pay that kind of money on equipment which would be proven useless in the court of law.Btw, it’s not SMU that raised their ticket prices. The city decided a while ago to raise the cost of parking tickets (as well as the min for parking meters). SMU and everyone else probably just followed along instead of being left behind. Who wouldn’t raise prices if it meant that they’d get 100% more revenue?Again, for the price of all those parking tickets, a bus pass would have paid for itself over and over.
Wow looks like a lot of insensitive people here. That is a ridiculous fine for parking. Looks like a couple peopl who are sore they didn’t go to college are on here
I went to university and bought a parking pass for every year I was there. Guess what, I never received a parking ticket! Wow, wasn’t that a revelation? Did someone put a gun to the OP’s head and force them to park in that spot? Were they forcibly confined or tied up with duct tape only to be released, after the parking enforcement officer made their rounds, to find a ticket on their windshield? Don’t like it? Get a lawyer or fight it in court. People need to take responsibility for their own actions and stop thinking about “me me me”.
Wow it seems like people are awfully un sensitive on this form. Theres like no sensitivity to anyone It seems like self centered it doesn’t affect me so why would I care types.
