I think those men growing up were over disciplined or abused by moms…to the point of wanting power over women as retribution as they grew up…in the case of your ” asshole”…time for anger mgmt and if not…time to leave.

and I imagine all the nice gestures would be an old fashioned way of looking at a ‘gentleman’. in many respects, the terms gentleman and lady just mean a human with civilized behaviour. in some respects, they are confining and sexist terms.
I think OP was profoundly offended by someone who was so confident in his assholery that he thought nothing of yelling at his wife and child in public. I would be too. I am also offended by a mom yelling at her kids. kids yelling at their parents. and since I am not in their homes, the only place I am likely to witness it is if they do it in public. god knows what they do in private.
