I can totally understand why people would purchase coffee and hot chocolate and tea while then stand and watch the parade of lights (which was an insane mess of people that pretty much stopped the city on Saturday evening, btw). it’s cold, and they want to have their insides warmed up by unethically produced and purchased beverages! What I don’t understand is how you take the time to wait in line to buy these things, but can’t stand to take the time to walk another 5 meters with the empty cup in your hand to the nearest garbage bin (or recycling bin if appropriate) so you just drop it wherever you want. Which happens to be all along my walk in the morning. I really don’t mind picking up plastic bags (because I happily reuse them) and other garbage that I know is from drunk hooligans, but 30 one-use coffee cups within a span of 20 minutes? THAT IS INSANE! I still did it, of course, because it bothers me more to leave it than to pick it up and bitch about it later. COME ON PEOPLE! It’s your city too, and your earth! Get with the times, take a look around, and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for the garbage you purchase! —Tired of Kicking Everyone’s Rubbage

  1. How do you “ethically” PURCHASE something?

Better, how is something UNETHICALLY sold?

And: For what do you use (miscellaneous) “garbage that [you] know is from drunk hooligans”? Why?

You must be that woman who cursed me out for throwing my cigarette butt on the street, stating I was destroying the envioronment (really, some crazy-ass witch did this to me one day – I stood there amazed. Of course, if you’re crazy, you can get away with a lot of shit)!

  2. lol of course “Mister Meaty” would be the one to argue and wow.. the same person who was throwing a cigarette butt on the street.. go figure. I love when people say dont judge a book by it’s cover…well the cover was ‘how do you “ethically” PURCHASE something”.. I knew that would be followed with something they had done wrong lol.. fuck off you self righteous bag of shit. go litter your cigerette butts up your shaft.

  3. The longer I live the more certain I am that the concept of “Personal responsibility” is somehow considered to be a violation of human rights under the Charter.
    Fuck the World.

  4. You lost me at “I can totally understand why people would purchase coffee and hot chocolate and tea while then stand and watch the parade of lights “
I finally managed to not get stuck in that cluster-fuck for a change….

  5. whoo! i came on here to bitch about the same thing, noticed all of university avenue is a fucking mess, same with every other year, and it’s really disgusting, parade of garbage for sure. Glad there’s someone else out there absolutely disgusted by the suburb slugs who come out for the free light show. Not to mention some of the floats themselves were littering plastic confetti crap everywhere.

  6. Well then coastreviewer, answer my questions:

How do you “ethically” PURCHASE something?

Better, how is something UNETHICALLY sold?

Or can you answer them?! Come on! You’re the BMOC! Huh?! Got an answer? Huh?

  7. Yep I agree with OB. Some people are pigs. They don’t think about the earth, just about themselves.

  8. to MR MEATY know it all :
thical consumerism (alternatively called ethical consumption, ethical purchasing, moral purchasing, ethical sourcing, ethical shopping or green consumerism) is a type of consumer activism practiced through ‘positive buying’ in that ethical products are favoured, or ‘moral boycott’, that is negative purchasing and company-based purchasing. [1]

The term “ethical consumer”, now used generically, was first popularised by the UK magazine the Ethical Consumer, first published in 1989. Ethical Consumer magazine’s key innovation was to produce ‘ratings tables,’ inspired by the criteria-based approach of the then emerging ethical investment movement. Ethical Consumer’s ratings tables awarded companies negative marks (and from 2005 overall scores) across a range of ethical and environmental categories such a ‘animal rights’, ‘human rights’ and ‘pollution and toxics’, empowering consumers to make ethically informed consumption choices and providing campaigners with reliable information on corporate behaviour. Such criteria-based ethical and environmental ratings have subsequently become a commonplace both in providing consumer information and in business-to-business corporate social responsibility and sustainability ratings such as those provided by Innovest, Calvert, Domini, IRRC, TIAA-CREF and KLD Analytics. Today, Bloomberg and Reuters even provide “environmental, social and governance” ratings direct to the financial data screens of hundreds of thousands of stock market traders.[2] The not-for-profit Ethical Consumer Research Association continues to publish Ethical Consumer magazine and its associated website, which provides free access to ethical ratings tables.

Have a good day 🙂 how’s your shaft.. I hope you’ve put out your butts in your pre-cum before you fuck your ugly spouse, lol

  9. They need far more receptacles for waste than they have at these kind of events. The few that are around are overflowing. Granted a group of people walked by with garbage bags to pick up empty containers from poeple on both sides of the street but, clearly it’s not enough. I pretty much had to carry my cup back to my car. Maybe the crew keeping people back and out of the street could also carry garbage bags.

  10. if you don’t like it, then don’t go. if you just wanna bitch about the garbage. there are more worthwhile things to complain about. take our new mayor for example, did you make a fuss when he gave himself and the backroom boys their new big raise?
or how about the transhit non system, and anything else that is more fucking important than some people making a mess, in a fucking messy already city.

  11. The cops should round up the panhandlers , junkies and street filth right before a public event like The Parade of Unquenchable Despair. Makes the downtown more inviting for the non-parasitic general public. When it’s done you send the bums out as a work gang to pick up the garbage. They get to keep any returnables they find and you pay them off in vouchers for fast food chains and coffee shops. That way the public areas stay reasonably clean and the pavement people get to enjoy that same feeling of satisfaction in actually working for their food that the rest of us do.

  12. As far as more garbage cans are concerned you have a choice. Pony up and pay for unsightly 2000lb concrete and rebar art installations every block, that even a NSCAD firstie would dismiss as derivative and pedestrian. Or furnish more metal receptacles to function as weapons of mass destruction for the Last-call anarchists to bift through the windows of those optimistic small business owners who haven’t yet abandoned Barrington to the Mongol hordes

  13. HELLO TO ALL YOUR WHO DON’T GET SARCASM. i don’t understand why people choose to purchase unethically produced hot bevys. which i thought would be obvious since i pick up other people’s trash everyday. i guess sarcasm over the internet is something that should be toyed with. i just wanted to bitch, and bitch i did.

also, with the drunk hooligans: you can’t control them, so i just put up with them and pick up after them. it’s the families and masses of people that join to “celebrate the holidays” for 2 hours then leave their nasty shit everywhere.

  14. Yeah… coastreviewer, please study the grammer rules of English; re-read my original comment; then bend over over for me – no yelling.

  15. Your efforts are appreciated plasticfreelady (although I prefer styrofoamfreelady since some plastics can be recycled). The fair trade stuff, the jury is still out on that for me. You seem to be a lady with a social conscience and you back it up with action. Good for you!

  16. i need to gripe about the use of the word ‘bevy’ instead of beverage, or drink. WTF. is that some kind of hipster term? how dahling.

  17. How do I like my coffee? Unethical!

On a serious note, people are awful. They can’t even hold onto their cups and such until they get to a proper garbage can somewhere (even if that means *gasp* home)

Don’t even get me started on cigarette butts!

  18. I learned it from the Aussie naval drama “Sea Patrol”:

“No bevvies on the control panels, Bomber”

    or:

“Another round of bevvies lads. Your shout, Buffer! “

Even I have to admit, “Sea Patrol” is about as antipodean from hip as it’s possible to get.

  19. Bevy, tot, wets, wobbly pop, barley sandwich, splice the mainbrace, up spirits, shore run, etc etc etc.

  20. i am still going to stick with ‘coffee’ ‘tea’ ‘booze’ . i think it’s been co-opted by yuppies.

  21. I’ve lived in Halifax most of my life and I’ve never been to that parade… It’s always too cold and parades around here aren’t impressive. Also, I avoid any event that attracts runts and their dick parents who are like “OMG I HAVE KIDS!!! OMG I DON’T HAVE TO THROW MY TRASH IN THE GARBAGE BECAUSE I HAVE KIDS TOO BUSY!! I HAVE KIDS I NEED TO PARK IN THIS BUS STOP!!!” Bleeeh.

  22. Yes, it is quite cold, there’s more line-ups than in Soviet Russia, it’s hard to move around and you’ve got paralyzing gridlock when it’s all over. Basically a good time for the whole family.

  23. Enjoyed it as a kid. Now I’d stick to reading a good book about David Stirling ,Paddy Mayne and the original S.A.S.

  24. Sorry op, I think it’s you who needs to get with the times, can’t you see this is a losing battle? It has been for decades now. You just seeing it now? It took a parade for you to notice? Damn!
