University is a place were people come to get a higher level of education. Some people come here with a plan for their future and some do not. Some people spend their weekends drinking, and some do not. And above all some people are more mature than other people. In kindergarten, we all learn VERY important lessons, like put your hand up when you have a question or use words to solve your problems. For most people these lessons stuck, but the one lesson that does not seem to stick is DON’T TALK WHILE YOUR TEACHER IS TALKING. In 100 percent of my classes this year, the same problem occurs, the clock is at five minutes to the end of class, and everyone begins to pack up and chat with their neighbours, all the while, the professor who is still trying to finish the lecture is being drowned out by the clicking of binders, the ruffling of papers, and the chatting of students. It is rude and inconsiderate. Classes end at a certain time for a reason. There is no grey area, it is simply black and white. Don’t talk or pack up until the teacher says the class is over. A very simple solution, to an extremely frustrating problem. —ST

Your prof needs to grow a set, and take charge of the class.
But, meh….what do you expect from an apathetic teacher with tenure.
Thank fug classes are over for another semester so you can be somewhat less frustrated….
You know. Students don’t know how good they have it.
The working schleps of the world have no sympathy for your ass. Hell, I work in a post secondary environment and I WAS YOU jstu last year for the past 10 before that *I* have no sympathy for you.
Not when I have to drag my ass out of bed every morning at 5:30am and sit on a cold ass bus for an hour to spend my day doing shit for others (and then giving the gov’t almost half of my paycheque – on top of loan payments) and then sit on another bus for an hour to get home totally exhausted and ready for bed, only to have the same routine start up tomorrow.
Is the fact that people are packing their shit up before the very end of class REALLY so important in your life that you have to write about it? Yes? Well I predict a strong dose of reality when you finish that degree.
Could not agree with you more! It’s so disrespectful and distracting when people start fidgeting around you when you’re still trying to catch the end of a lecture.
Maybe those packing up and doing so to get in the coffee shop line sooner before the mass rush.
My math teacher in grade 11 would give you detention if you packed up before the bell rang. So we’d all have our hands under our binders, ready to go as soon as the bell rang…. then when it did, it was like a riot of pages flipping, books smacking and bags ruffling!
University is a place were people come to …. The word is WHERE….
A little less arse licking and a little more time checking your spelling is in order, stay behind after class and polish my shoes.
There kind of is a gray area, really, because some profs keep you in longer and some let you go sooner. Some make sure you stay to the exact second. For example, I had very three different profs this semester:
Prof A tended to keep us in 5-10 minutes later than the time required for the class.
Prof B would LEAVE 15 minutes before class was meant to be over, thus dismissing us.
Prof C wouldn’t let us leave earlier or later than the allotted time, and was even hesitant to let us leave during a fire alarm once.
It’s usually something, in my past experience, that students tend to do in auditorium-sized classrooms. Which, honestly, I don’t blame them. I don’t think it’s a respect issue so much as it is a “holy hell I can’t listen to this anymore” issue. They aren’t overly engaging to students and chances are only about 25% of those students are taking it as a required course.
I mean, that doesn’t exactly excuse disrupting the professor. Haha. But that’s just my take on it.
Hey! What youz doin?
shut up and listenz

There is no excuse for packing up and chatting before the prof is finished. It is disruptive. It is disrespectful to the prof. It is disrespectful to those students who *are* trying to hear the last of what is being said. It demonstrates one’s own lack of maturity and integrity, high-lighting a sense of entitled self-importance. Liking the prof is not relevant to the reason for attending the lecture, which hopefully should be gaining an education while not depriving others of theirs.
What’s wif all the damn cats!

Oh cool!
Your problem begins with the flawed belief that University “is a place where people come to get a higher education.” 15 years ago yes. 20 years ago, most def. 30 plus years ago, absolutely. Today, certainly not. It is glorified and extremely expensive babysitting. Especially at third rate ‘schools’ like Dal, SMU, etc. if you want a ‘higher’ education’ you must attend a higher institution of learning. If they even exist anymore.
I hear this breed is pretty rare as well

University is a place were people come to get high.
I see it as an extension of high school over here except without your parents to supervise you. PK that first post depressed the crap out of me because thats basically every day of life after you realise how good you had it.
🙁
THE PROFOUNDLY STUPID MAN
“yyy” (3:41PM) proclaims, in respect to university, that “It is glorified and extremely expensive babysitting. Especially at third rate ‘schools’ like Dal, SMU, etc. If you want a ‘higher’ education you must attend a higher institution of learning. If they exist anymore.”
Being a stupid man, YYY doesn’t seem to realize that this is merely the introduction to his claim, not the conclusion. Has YYY ever been to any of the institutions he claims to despise? How, in his view, do they fall short? Has YYY ever been to any of the “higher institutions of education” he claims to prize? How, in his view, are they to be distinguished from those he despises? Has YYY ever been to university at all? Does he have even high school leaving?
In effect, YYY embodies the profound stupidity he preens himself on transcending. YYY is a profoundly stupid man. He doesn’t realize it, of course, since that is what being profoundly stupid means.
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
goddamn, i’ll be glad when exams are over, and you assholes are out of fucking school and/or college. then you can go the fuck back to whatever golden palace you came from.
Hahahahaha, God, this could be fun.
Who will win this round, annie or y. Who will be victorious? Who cares ;P
Maybe they’l distroy each other, I can only hope.
But alas, montrealman has started out poorly, again (and again your comprehension sucks) you got y’s sex wrong. yyy is a girl you dunce.
Yup, that about sums it up, Anglo 🙁
And what REALLY sucks is working at a University for the first spring break since you graduated and you don’t get that week off.
However, there *are* perks to not being a student — no exam studying, no all nighters to finish/start (heh) an essay the night before it’s due (we all know everyone does this, yo), paycheque’s nice (even if you look at your gross pay and net pay and it makes you cry a lil)….
Still, sleeping in until 11 every day was niiiiiiiiiiice.
the pay you pk? man, i gotta check that out with my boss^^
… “pay” is a relative term. 😛
teehee, you got that right ms kitty. my job does have certain “perks”
This is really annoying, the OP is right. It makes you feel like you’re in Grade 14, not a university where people actually pay for knowledge. It’s so jarring. People don’t even do this in community college in a lot of courses, mostly due to the older median age I guess. I’ve put up with a lot of crap in my actual jobs, but I’m not paying to be there, they’re paying me!
