wow, what a dramatic and visually stunning opening ceremony!

it must’ve been a breathtaking experience to actually be there in the bird’s nest stadium… i get goosebumps just watching it on TV.

way to go CHINA!

on the other hand, the $40 billion dollars it cost to host the 29th olympiad would feed, clothe and house many millions of people, fund a lot of medical research, and so on…

and shame on russia for launching a vicious military attack on georgia’s independence, on the same day, insulting the very spirit of the olympics games. the cameras showed Putin sitting in the VIP area of the stadium… what a creep.

  1. Hey – I am going to shamelessly promote another part of the Coast site. Coast staff will be blogging away throughout the games. You can comment on any of our dumb comments. And please if you find anything out these in the Olympic world that looks interesting, let us know! Besides – don’t you think this post is a little too nice for the bitch section?

  2. Tim? Or someone else?Encouraging us to post elsewhere on the coast website… hmmm… Is it possible, just the slightest bit, that after all this time, and all we’ve been through, is it possible that *clearing throat* you like our style on the coast?

  3. How could you ever doubt that we didn’t like you bitchers? (This is Andy btw, the web editor).

  4. i DID bitch (a little) about the obscene amount of $$$ being spent on the games (in the face of world hunger, poverty and disease) and about russia’s military incursion into georgia on the same day (what, did russia think the world wouldn’t notice?!)sorry i wasn’t ‘bitchy’ enough… i’ll do better next time ;~}

  5. This “Andy” (if that’s your real name) is a cunning wordsmith – note the trickery of “how could you ever doubt that we DIDN’T like you”; in one sentence he both placates our internet ego sensibilities by making us think he likes us, he really likes us, and totally disses us, for what he’s REALLY saying is “I don’t like you. There is no doubt.”Well done, Mr. Andy. Well done indeed.PS What do you think about the commonwealth games commitee?

  6. Yeah, it’s called a joke. Sarcasm. Irony. I wasn’t presuming to illuminate any hidden meaning for the unenlightened, and it certainly wasn’t intended to be used as troll food.

  7. ouch, qwerty, ouch!your words cut like a dull knife(bows down before Qwerty, his Bitch Highness)please forgive me, your Bitch Highnass, i’m not a well-seasoned bitcher, like yourself, and certainly no match for your witty bitchitudeand shame on me for not knowing my place in the coast’s bitch hierarchy, of which you are surely one of the almighty & esteemedi beg you, flog me with your wickedly sarcastic tongue, qwerty… teach me my place, give it to me good & hard, a tongue lashing that i’ll not soon forget (bends over). but please be gentle… at first.and don’t feed the trolls! ;~}

  8. Overdone, overblown, intimidating and frightening. People in that country can make 50 cents a day if they are lucky and yet they find 300 million to blow on a spectacle based upon stolen technology and slave-like labor. They said the themes were ancient Chinese innovations like gunpowder, paper, printing and the compass. I thought it should have focused on modern China’s legacy of copyright infringement, patent theft, environmental destruction and human rights violations. I hope we all listened carefully to the Chinese national anthem as I fear we will all be forced to sing it some day in the future.

  9. Right.So here’s the thing – I’m not really on the market for a new pet troll, and there are plenty of people here I actually enjoy conversing with, who are intelligent, witty and funny.Pretty much, this is the last thing I’m going to say to you on this matter, and hopefully ever, at least until you figure out how to act around the grownups. And I’m not a guy. Maybe you should go back to lurking for a while.

  10. xenophobia aside, there’s no doubt that china will be the next superpower… thanks, in great part, to (WE) greedy north americans who have an insatiable appetite for an endless supply of CHEAP electronics and other junk that we don’t need. hell, even much of our packaged food (frozen fish, veges, you name it) comes from china. why? because WE consumptive craphounds demand that everything we consume (and throw away) to be CHEAP.the chinese are only supplying what we are too apathetic/lazy/____ to do for ourselves… and we’ve got NOBODY to blame but OURSELVESas for Canada being annexed, quite frankly, i’ll take Hu Jintao over GWB any day!now, from Beijing, back to your regularly scheduled olympic programming!(i’m missing the games, hanging-out with you goddamn bitches!)

  11. Why do you think I care if you like me? I’m not really hurting for fans. There was some truth to something you said – you really do need to learn your place. In life, on the internet, anywhere really – new people are the ones who need to prove themselves, and not the other way around.Talk to hedgy. Her transition from the land of the lurkers to regular poster was virtually seamless.

  12. There are plenty of things to bitch about on here without having to actually bitch AT the people posting. If someone is being considerate, then there’s hardly any reason not to be pleasant to them in return. Pfffft.

  13. hi lilac, where have you been?? i’ve missed you!indeed, it does appear that i have some detractorsmeh, whatever… those who unreservedly speak the truth are often criticized, if not hated, for it.on the other hand, i can be rather tactless and offensive to those with fragile sensibilities, i suppose.but let’s put things in perspective, we’re all just a bunch of anonymous bitchers… with too much time on our handsand nobody expects the spanish inquisition!

  14. Oh please. The “I call it like I see it” crew is the lamest, most self righteous and most hypocritical of all. I have yet to cross paths with an “unreserved truth speaker” who knows the first thing about truth or honesty. Truly, the self appointed “brutally honest” are the most deluded individuals you’ll meet, on par with the born again jesus campers. To blame your inability to have a normal social interaction that doesn’t result in outright shunning on the other person’s inability to deal with the truth is sad and completely disingenuous. Lilac, don’t you have a titty that requires whipping out in public?

  15. now THAT is what i’m talking about, Qwertyyou see, i’m no match for your bitchy prowessoooohhh, grrrrthat was a delicious tongue lashing… i loved it!i had better go wash up nowthanks luv… call me

  16. Don’t get me wrong, the woes of the world certainly should not fall onto the shoulders of hard working, dreamy athletes but for the world to look on and celebrate China’s contribution to “Olympic Spirit” on the backs of the Chinese people… or, am I the only one who heard about hundreds of homes torn down and people left homeless to accommodate new Olympic infrastructure? Didn’t anyone else hear about the workers who built that infrastructure, quietly hidden away on streets less traveled in their country? And what about Tibet? How can the world celebrate a communistic regime that continually bastardizes human rights? The games have been over-the-top gorgeous but at who’s expense? Food for thought.

  17. Free Tibet?Fuck Tibet.In a country that doesn’t allow it’s own Citizens to seperate I don’t see the correlation that another country had to bow down to zealots.The ceremony was awesome. I was highly impressed.We don’t mind fucking over people to save three minutes or less on traffic *chough* Chebucto *cough* but would bring up a stink for displacements of citizens to make room for a stadium that would impress the world and host the world in the only sporting event that everyone could get on board with? If the citizen that got displaced worked, then they would be provided housing. That’s the Chinese way. Wish it was the same here sometimes… And the thought about money and the costs of building the stadium? Money does shit all for food. Try eat it and see how far that gets you. People have been pumping MONEY to Africa for years and what happens, it is used to buy weapons. No, instead of talking about money for hunger talk about destroying crops to make the product more scarce/profitable. Been going on in North America for DECADES.

  18. “7 Years in Tibet”… stars Brad Pitt. Rent it. Watch it. See if you think, “fuck Tibet” after you learn what’s happened over there. What’s wrong with you?

  19. Free Quebec!If it isn’t going to happen at home then don’t fuck with your neighbor. That’s the height of hypocrisy. They fought the law and LOST, they were conquered, just like North America is conquering the Middle East. Running someone over with a tank and carpet bombing a village provide the same result. The receipient is DEAD. They kill, we kill. The only difference is that we are looking at them.So, just as I support the victor (us) I support the victor (China).And I reiterate: *ahem* FUCK TIBET!

  20. I watched soilders cut off women’s breasts so that they won’t be able to feed their children. I don’t give a fuck about what happened to Tiebetans. I don’t need a MOVIE to tell me that people get fucked over. I don’t need a MOVIE to tell me that wars are going around and that the struggle for power means that one way or another someone is going to make it their mission to ruin your shit. Apparantly you do which is fine. And what happened in “7 Years in Tibet” that would be of any note?I do not watch Brad Pit movies because I think he is akin to shooting myself in the left ballsack to see if it hurts.And isn’t it ironic that I am to take the world of a Nazi about people treating others unfairly. If you asked me Heinrich Harrer should not have ran and be a man and face up to the atrocities that HE did. Don’t you see the hypocrisy in that pile of shit? No Fuck Tibet they even harboured WAR CRIMINALS!!!

  21. Gimpysaviour: “That’s the Chinese way”You go ask a peaceful Tibetan monk what is the “Chinese way”. And how many Tibetans were invited to see or participate in China’s impression on the world?Why should Quebec, part of one of the only bilingual countries in the world, ever want to separate from beautiful Canada? The fact that you can say so is a good thing, isn’t it? Can’t do that in China without getting arrested. I’m sorry, the world looks on as an entire culture of people is obliterated by China’s communistic rule. When the world does nothing but celebrate, it’s as if the world condones human rights atrocities.Oh, and Gimpysaviour, what the fuck are you talking about? hahahaThe opening ceremonies were nothing short of breath taking and a real contribution to human culture and art. I’m guilty. I watched them.

  22. Olympics suck in my opinon, opening ceremonies breath taking? I’d rather use that terminology for good nature photos or a baby being born that is breath taking! “The Chinese way” that is racist, there isn’t one culture amongst us that is perfect including our own north american culture. Charles Manson, Timothy Mcvey etc…but we don’t say this is the “north american way”. We shouldn’t let certain cultures traditions or attrocities(pardon spelling) to dictate what a certain culture is…I’ve worked with Asian people and they are lovely people, gays, Africans, Arabs etc are all good people there is good and bad in all, we just have to throw out the bad and look at the good in all. I know I wouldn’t want to be compared to Charles Manson or a German wouldn’t want to be compared to Hitler, etc.As for Tibet, wherever human rights are being violated I believe they should be stopped. My personal way of thinking is that put yourelf in the shoes of someone else. You might then know how they feel or fight for what they are fighting eg. Gay rights, Tibet etc. Qwerty my darlin, you can still adopt me 🙂

  23. How many Iranians were able to watch or participate in the global event a few years back, how many Russians when they blocked them?Quebec wants to seperate. Canada REFUSES. How many ‘peaceful’ Afganis got shot? How about Africans? or Iraquis? Or Iranians? Or Serbians to the Muslims? Or Natives (flogged, raped, subjugated)… In fact Canada is the LAST place to talk about the soverign rights of a weak nation. Ask the aboriginals if their peaceful lives ment shit when it came to Canadian expansion. China subjugated Tibet just like Canada subjugated First Nations. As an aside I was referring on your reiteration about that I should “watch the movie then tell us what you think.” I don’t NEED to watch the movie. I know it is a skewed hollywoodisation of a book. The main character was a straight up Nazi that participated in NAZI practices and was on the run from the law for his WAR CRIMES. He took up Nazism wholeheartedly and without second thought. Now, a belief that it is alright to be a Nazi unless you see your friend screwed means nothing to me. He was a Nazi bastard that deserved to be erradicated but he was a chicken shit who ran and then had the GALL to criticize ANYONE. That’s tantamount to a racial murder objecting because a white man killed another white man. FUCK his viewpoint it is moote and irrelevent. “7 years in Tibet” is a crock of shit made by a racist and faccist so I don’t subscribe to Nazi writings or movies thank you very much. Ask that Iraqui who had his family killed by Canadians and ask him how he loves canada… But you arn’t killing yourself and overthrowing your DEMOCRATIC government and going on Parliment hill demanding a change in command are you? So fuck a Tiebetan monk.China won, Tiebet lost and didn’t conform like a good loser, so they get what they derserve.

  24. Human rights aside, for such a populous country, Canada’s performance at the Olympics so far is pretty embarrassing.

  25. shame on Russia? dude go back and read the news, maybe a good service like Reuters. It was Georgia who launched an offensive on South Osseita, a region that was practicing independance since the early 90’s. Russia responded to an ally against a nation that indiscriminatly bombed civilian targets. There is a lot of geopolitics and resources behind the whole deal and both sides share some blame but you can’t call out Russia for starting this one.RE China: the billions of dollars we spend on cell phone ring tones and the latest fashion accesories would also feed and give medical care to millions of people but I guess it is easier to point fingers at others.Good for the Chinese, the ceremonies were incredible and spending that much effort to help the world better understand China and open up dialogue is only a positive thing for the future.

  26. sheesh what a surprise! the opening ceremony’s singer was a fake! lmao and they call this breath taking? dramatic? sounds like the bold and the beautiful!

  27. That was one ugly assed kid. But ugly like a pug you know? So ugly she was almost cute. She seems to still be honored just to have had her voice used so no need for us to get upset about it.
