How about next time you shut down the house you do the same for your inflated salary as well? Your government has done nothing to support the average Canadian in 7 years, you support the wealthy and piss on human rights. If people in power like you had not driven so many of my peers to apathy in politics perhaps this would still be a Canada worth calling home.

I read in the Letters to the Editor (CH) last week that a person felt he could be compared to a certain infamous German circa 1935-40ish……I felt a little better reading that……it validated my own feelings and gave a little assurance it wasn’t just me going neurotic or something.
I’m so ashamed of what he stands for, what he’s done, and what he’s pleased himself with……he is this country’s biggest insult!!

I think government works better when not at the “office”. All they do there is act like little kids (all of them). Back home they are at least more accessible to their constituents.
What people are saying about Harper is the same thing they say about any other PM (Martin, Chretien, Mulroney, Trudeau, Diefenbaker, etc). They all made unpopular decisions, prorogued parliament, had scandals, ineffective ministers, insulted one set of people or another and the list goes on.
As much as we hate them – they are humans and fuck up like anyone else – true enough bro tim . For anyone who doesn’t know, sure it may appear as though they get more work done when they’re not in office – and some kinds of work they do – but when parliament is prorogued it’s basically reset, so any bills on their way to becoming laws that were in the senate are no longer valid, and they have to start the process over again. Talk about a waste of friggin time. I don’t think it would have made a difference if they were in parliament, I’m sure they would have given just as much attention to Haiti, particularly since it takes the pressure off Mr. Harper when he’s under the gun for things such as the Afghan detainees scandal. I gotta agree with the OP, I think a lot of people are truly fed up and we have a right to be.
The problem is, that even when it becomes clear that we have a Prime Minister who prefers to ‘rule’ from the PMO, not even consulting his own caucus on key matters…there are still a plurality of Canadians who think this is just fine…

They LIKE the idea that Harper has ‘taken charge’…they think that’s great, because most conservatives like the idea of someone bringing “order” and “discipline” to the political process. They like order and discipline in their lives…they like it in the military, they like it in their churches, they like it on the streets…and they like it in the bedroom, which is why so many so-called “religious right’ folks seem to get caught with their pants down (literally) getting spanked by Dominatrices, cross-dressing, wearing bondage masks etc etc…I digress.
The only hope for The Others in this country is a merger of the center-left parties…

Harper’s a dick, and our government is an embarrassment. This is coming from someone who probably plays right wing more than most on here. The proroguing of parliament is an outrage. I’m sorry, but of you’re making > $100,000/yr, show the fuck up to work. It may suck, you may have to answer questions & deal with things you’d rather not deal with. To go back to the original post, though… I know people are frustrated with Harper, and definitely in this part of the country. That said this place is still worth calling home. Its a place to be proud to be from. Fact of the matter is, when it comes down to it, he DOESN’T speak for us. Think about it. He hates drugs but were still getting high in the basement. He’s anti climate change but the wind turbines are still going up. He’s a homophobe but Pride is getting bigger & bigger every year. Hell, even if he’s living in the 1950’s maybe we’re doing this shit to spite him.
The response to date for Haiti has been respectable, and no doubt he’s going to try to use this for political gain. I just want to bring up a valid point: he’s not being deployed away from his family on two days notice. That’s your brothers & sisters, friends and neighbours. They’re the ones over in Kandahar as well. Not Steve & Peter. They just take credit for those people’s hard work & sacrifice. Canada’s worth calling home because we have people who think beyond themselves.
