I hate reading coments Newest to Oldest! The new comments are spoiling the old comments I’ve not read yet! Why is the default setting Newest to Oldest for showing comments! The logical way is Oldest to Newest! Who the heck scrolls up a screen? Bah!

  1. Yeah, I noticed this the other day, it’s really irritating. Yeah, I can change it myself, but I often forget, and it’s counter-intuitive. Stupid.

  2. respectfully, i disagree. when a thread gets up over 6 comments I hate making that extra click to see the most recent comments. if you want to change it back, there is a drop down menu that enables you to reverse the order.

  3. Actually, far more annoying is that stupid Coors Light ad that opens up as soon as you mouse over it, interfering with my damned bitch window…

  4. Yeah but you can see the the most recent comments on the righthand column on the page. If you only get a chance to check a couple times a day, trying to scroll down to the last comment you read so you can read them upwards in order is really awkward.

  5. Grrr! I agree completely – it should DEFAULT to oldest to newest – if you want to change it into wacko world order go for it – but it should default to the sensible way – as a story unfolds, chronologically!

And holy fuck! Those Coors ads ARE really annoying!

  6. I agree with abc123, it’s counter-intuitive to scroll up to read a thread. Also, if I want to reference or reply to the comment before mine, I have to scroll all the way back to it at the top of the page. I know that one click will change the order, but with my sketchy wireless connection, I’ll spend extra time waiting for the comments window to reload, which is just plain annoying.

I realize that going newest-to-oldest may make sense in terms of story comments, but not so for bitch comments, which are often only worth reading in entirety because you can watch them spiral into some kind of absurdity. C’mon Andy, for the sake of absurd spiral, change it back. Please?

  7. Andy! Listen to your regular bitchers! We want the comments oldest to newest! Having to change the order for each bitch every single time is really annoying.

  8. Andy: In the words of the great Joe Dirt “It’s not what YOU like, it’s what the CONSUMER likes”.

  9. @”And holy fuck! Those Coors ads ARE really annoying!”

Four Words: Stop Using Internet Explorer!

I didn’t even know there were Coors ads on this site.

Use the Firefox browser (Google it) with the “No Script” and “Adblock” plugins! You’ll never see another ad ever again. You’ll also never get another virus ever again.

  10. Andy, we don’t have to click to see anything extra in the Bitch forum, which is why it’s cheesing us off.

  11. Oldest to newest. Or at least a way to set that as the default in our preferences or something. It’s only one click to change it…but it’s one click for EVERY thread you read. That’s a lot more clicking.

  12. Goddammit, oldest to newest! It’s especially frustrating when I’m try to pick apart kay’s arguments.

  13. i wholeheartedly agree with this, everytime i try to find a way to get older back on top,the newer jumps back into place, pisses us all off as to what was said previously.

  14. Wow! I could never had anticipated this response. This is the 22nd comment and I know you can look at it in the recent comments field, but when I am monitoring a thread, I always hate it when I go in and have to scroll through all the old comments to get to the newish ones. You guys are on here so frequently, since when do you have to scroll that far to see anything you’ve missed? And here I thought I was doing this for all the die hards. Oh, and my bosses, who like to see new first.

  15. I thought YOU were the boss? I want to speak to whoever is in charge around here. I’ll hold.

  16. lol Miles
I submitted a similar bitch about 2 years ago, when they first switched this, and got shit on for it. I’m glad everyone now agrees! Oldest – Newest

  17. Pavillion – I use Chrome – and yeah I’d use adblock but then it does funky things to some websites doesn’t it? Like misreading whether something is an actual flah component of a site or an ad??

  18. It’s a lot of scrolling when threads explode in an afternoon. Plus, then you have to read from bottom to top, and it’s annoying. 25 comment annoying damnit.

Ditto on Mile’s idea of having it in the preferences and having to only click the damn thing once.

  19. Hey ‘lorilulu’… wait. I’d like to respond to what you said, but I don’t want to have to scroll all the way up and then scroll all the way down again to reply, at which point I usually either forget what you said or what I was about to say! Annoying as fuck!

FUUUUCCCCCKKKK ANDY I’M GOING MENTAL, CHANGE IT BACK NOW GOD DAMNIT BEFORE I GO FUCKING POSTAL! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH PULLING MY HAIR OUT I CAN’T TAKE IT ANY LONGER!

Just kidding about that shooting rampage comment. Oops, I can get in serious trouble for comments like that, can’t I? KIDDING KIDDING KIDDING!

  20. just make the preference part of our profile so as not to cheese anyone off….
I do much rather prefer oldest to newest and was wondering if it was just me where I’ve recently got a new comp. didn’t know if there was a setting I missed.

not to mention I have the ‘don’t look up any new updates on this page’ setting fixed (unfortunately) and clicking the dropdown doesn’t even re-lookup the page.
I have to change to oldest to newest and then reload just to read it the way me likes it.
hard times we’re livin in here…

  21. Dartmouthy, I’ve never run into an issue with ABP/NoScript and I’ve been running both as long as I’ve had my laptop (a little over a year now). In fact, I’ve got it installed and use it on probably the heaviest flash site: Newgrounds. There is a Flash blocker plugin out there, but websites rarely if ever use flash to show ads. Also, if it becomes an issue, both have settings to allow content on certain pages (this is especially useful on TV websites with streaming content).

  22. Hey – who sez journalists don’t understand PR??? OK, just about everyone commenting on Tim’s editorial this week, but this was a pretty easy crowd pleaser. The bitch section goes oldest-newest BUT the rest of the site stays newest to oldest.

  23. “Hey – who sez journalists don’t understand PR???”

PR practitioners. Though a good chunk of the PR faculty at MSVU *are* journalists. Go figure.

  24. PK – I’m not going to get involved in that mess over in the editorial section, but I’ll ask you: what none of the PR people over there will say is – what DO PR PEOPLE DO that are we missing or not understanding? I don’t really understand the misunderstanding, at least in the govt context, especially given just how secretive NS is when it comes to govt data.

  25. Andy — in PR people have to know how to relate to people which…not a lot of journalists know how to do…effectively (heh).

I had a boss once who was a journalist and he told me that journalists are tactless. The more journalists I dealt with during my tenure in that position (and others) the more I realized that statement is true.

PR people are the people who could invite you over for supper, shove a splitery stick in and out of your ass over and over and make you leave with a warm fuzzy feeling on the inside (even if you’re still picking splinters out of your anus). They’re the ones who can spin whatever shit they need to to get their audience to *heart* an idea…and they’re also the ones who can generally pick out the garbage filled ideas/marketing/advertising/whatever out there.

They also plan really cool parties too!

  26. Sorry PK…can’t get that scene from Office Space out of my head….”I’m a people person!!!”

  27. At least she didn’t mention a “Jump to Conclusions” mat.

Excuse me. I believe, you have, my stapler.

  28. Ah, ok. That’s why that warm fuzzy feeling I had about tax reform is starting to wear off. Ow!

  29. oops – when I posted my comment it seems to have reversed again… I haven’t really dug into my coffee yet! lol
