I am getting sick and tired of all the old drivers around this city! Seriously Speed Limit is 50 not 20!!!!! Check your freaking blind spot before coming into the lane I am in, I have already had a car written off in the past month, I don’t want another one to end up the same way.

And finally they are called turn signals – use them! I am a firm believer that once you turn 65 you have to take the drivers test every year! —Tired of all the White Knuckle Drivers

  1. You already wrote off one car this month??….. but elders are the problem??. My dad’s 65 and can out drive anyone I know. Slow down junior…loose the road rage.

  2. I’d go with 55 yrs …. just to be sure.

and don’t make them use their signals,…
they take the corners so slowly and passively that it always stays on as if some form of eternal left has been bestowed upon their vehicle.

  3. True dat bitcher, true dat. Then there are the youngsters who drive way. too. goddamn. fast. And cut everyone off like crazy… and those who drive slowly in the fast lanes, and those who don’t understand high beams… see where I’m going with this? Heard it all before. There are morons on the road, and they’re definitely not JUST the oldies.

Seriously though, my grandfather drove way too long before they took away his license, and he argued and fought the family every step of the way. If they made it mandatory, even after 70… or 75… it would be way better than having to get a doctor to do it.

  4. I think there should be mandatory re-testing for everyone, regardless of age. I think this would best be achieved best by having re-testing as part of the license renewal process.

  5. I will say that, the min requirements for sight to drive in NS is FAR too low. I know people who could probably be borderline legally blind and they STILL get passed when they have their eye test done every second year.

  6. As I sit at my desk I just witnessed an accident on Brunswick and Cogswell intersection.
In one car a toyota two young girls and in the Volvo a middle aged man. The girls in the Toyota just cut off the man in the Volvo and clipped each other.
The Toyota was coming down Brunswick Street (going north)and wanted to turn up Cogswell. The Volvo was driving down Brunswick (going south) The guy in the Volvo had the right away. I guess everyone should be tested yearly regardless of age.

  7. shit, that’s just outside here….
better be cleared up before I’m ready to head home.

and kitty, is it because they’ve memorized the chart?

  8. Nope! It’s a depth perception test through the specialist who has to report to the RMV on a bi-yearly basis.

I will say though that even though this person still has their license, they don’t drive anymore, but just won’t give up the license (I guess it’s a ‘sign’ of old age that they’re not willing to admit to — but rest assured LTWWBers — this person is not out on the road even though the province of NS said they are legally allowed to be).

  9. I’ll also agree with the under 20 tests as well…
though that would be expensive for the young’uns to have to renew every year.
would make more jobs for testers though since there would be more of an influx.

see, you’re helping the economy and you don’t even know it.

  10. Well, test them every year of raise the driving age to 18 (or 19). The brain/nervous system goes through a complete re-wiring at the age of 16 and that’s, apparently, when people are most uncoordinated because of this. According to W-5’s hard hitting investigative journalism, that is. So, licensing at 16 is apparently a terrible idea and the worst age possible.

  11. I don’t think it’s one particular group – this fucking city is about 75% shitty, impatient, self-entitled arsedrips who break every rule in the book. I see it every morning on the rotary and heading up Quinpool. One little bastard on his Vespa scooter got sick of waiting in traffic this morning and plowed up in the sidewalk full-fucking throttle. If someone had turned that corner, they would have gotten a gobful of tire.

  12. I’m with TTFN on this one, some people think they own the road … I’ve been cut off too many times by cyclists/scooters (and I always give them space so I’m puzzled as to why they would do so)…I’ve since stop swerving around them…and give them a good scare…they need it sometimes for driving dangerously…news flash…truck vs bike/scooter…not good odds for the bike/scooter.

  13. My dad turned 80 this summer and all he had to do is a written test; frankly if it was up to me he’d have to due a road test ( and he’d prob. fail sorry pop) 🙂

  14. My dad at 67 drives better than I do and his parking ability is FAR superior to mine. But he falls asleep while driving long distance if my mom isn’t pulling on his ears or massaging his neck. 😀

  15. You should be tested after 70, for sure. Of course, I’ll be kicking myself over that remark in 14 years.

  16. I would quit driving if I found myself unfit to drive because of age or vision problem or whatever. I’d rather be less mobile than be dead.

  17. There are some scary drivers out there, age notwithstanding.

BTW hrmboy: how do you decide which cyclists to ‘give a little scare to’? I follow the rules of the road on my cycle and understand the laws of physics concerning speed and size of vehicles. I swear I must have been given one of your good scares on occasion. I’m a good driver so just STOP IT will you??? (Got to lovvvvvve self-appointed traffic control-freaks!)

  18. Old or young, worst drivers are in Halifax, hands down. I have never seen someone make a right hand turn properly, let alone use a signal, make a left hand turn, or (heaven for bid), change a lane. I got rid of my car and I walk/bike now. They are still evil but at least I have more control over whether I live or die. Or have a road rage attack and kill someone. :))) Unfortunately, it’s just the way it is.

  19. AND I AM GETTING EVEN MORE SICK OF THESE YOUNG FUCKING ASSHOLES, AND THEIR LITTLE PIECES OF SHIT CARS, THAT SOUND LIKE A BAD BEAN FART. GET IN FRONT OF ME, I’LL ROLL RIGHT THE FUCK OVER YOU. AND IF YOU AREN’T BRAIN DEAD, FROM LISTENING TO THAT CRAP YOU CALL MUSIC. THEN THERE IS NO FUCKING HOPE FOR YOU. CHECK THE MOTOR VEHICLE DEPT., A NOISY EXHAUST IS AGAINST THEIR FUCKING LAWS. SO, WHEN ARE THE COPS GONNA START HAULING THESE SHITBOXES OFF THE FUCKING ROAD?

  20. OMG TBR! The whole of Quebec drives like shit. I thought I’d come home as someone french dude’s hood ornament.

No words can describe the clusterfuck that is the quebecois behind the wheel.

  21. @ oceanchick … unless you ran a red light and cut me off then you would not have been given a “scare” .. I’ve had multiple cyclists run red lights, and not yield the right of way…then they need a little wake-up call…I’m not running people over by any means…just don’t expect me to slow down if you plan on running a red light because you think you are above the law…99.9% of cyclists are fine…just once in a while someone has no brain and should be on the bus rather than on a bike.

  22. When I lived in Ottawa we referred to the other side of the bridge as: ‘Land of the Bad Drivers’… and a more accurate moniker did not exist PK (kitty in a turtleneck ;D )

  23. and you wanna talk driving, try that german autobahn, that’s a race every hour, of the day. you won’t last 2 seconds in a smart car there baby.

  24. Just be glad you don’t live in St. John’s. Nobody, from young people to the oldies, even knows how to drive.

  25. pffft…. try the traffic in the main & pender area of Vancouver omfg a certain race are running rampant here 🙂

  26. But to the point… older drivers who are clearly nervous on the road are a problem. I’m never surprised to see a puff of white hair when I’m stuck behind a car going 30 km/hr. I only complain when they do this in the passing lane, however.

Young speedy drivers, well, they aren’t nervous enough.

  27. In this province, I find that inept drivers are extremely well represented in every age group. No wonder the collision rate in this area is 3 times the national average.

I have lived in Québec, Montréal, Fredericton, the GTA, spent lots of time in Alberta and the NWT, travelled extensively in many european countries, and now I live here. From my experiene, the absolute worst drivers can be found here, not a shadow of a doubt in my mind.

I feel much safer driving in places where people typically drive 20 km/h over the speed limit (such as Québec and many places in Europe) but show a certain level of competency (checking blind spots, using signals, knowing who has the right of way, using the left lane to PASS).

  28. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA FRENCHIE drivers are WORSE here than in Quebec?

No freaking way. Not ever. Not ever in a million years are the Quebecois better drivers than NS…or ANYWHERE for that matter.

  29. I respectfully disagree, PK. A lot of my co-workers are transplants from Ontario, Alberta, BC and Québec. The one thing we all have in common is that we were flabbergasted by the average skill level (or lack thereof) of NS drivers when we moved here. I really don’t know how they teach driver’s ed here, but there is obviously something wrong.

  30. The OP has a valid point. The Gov’t should have mandatory driver retesting starting at 65 years of age, and every 5 years from there.
