So a few weeks ago when I had H1N1 and took some time off work I nearly lost my job for missing time… and no one seemed to think H1N1 was really a big enough deal for me to be off sick.
Now I am sitting here listening to you talk on the phone to fuck knows who, with all the details of how your family is sick with it and how terrible the symptoms are and how awful they feel. I wish I could punch you in the throat and keep my job. Thanks Coast for letting me vent.

I assume you are talking about your boss. It’s funny, but one of the few times where a boss being authoritative is almost certainly the way to go is right here. Not only should you stay home if you are contagious, but your boss should be TELLING you to. It sounds like you did the right thing, and your boss failed. I can understand suspicion that a person might be faking, but if you boss actually wanted you at work sick, they need to learn the word “presenteeism”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presenteeism
Depends where you work, if it’s a big business then it was wrong, but if it was a small one sometimes they can’t spare anyone.

Oh, wait, you have been absent from work for more than just the flue. Fess up OP, how much time have you really missed?
Commoner – I used no sick time until I got H1N1 and was off work for 7 days (with a doctor’s note). Apparently 7 days is excessive.

H1N1 is a hoax. If you catch it, you are a defective human. Make room for the healthy! Companies have the right to threaten to fire you since you are probably faking.
How do all these people have “confirmed” cases of H1N1 when they aren’t swab testing most people?
This is not directed at the OP specifically, but I have heard from about 50 people in the last week that say they have H1N1, and considering that they’ve lab tested 75 people, and about 50 of those 75 people have been hospitalized, that means at least 25 of these people can’t *possibly* have H1N1.
THIS is probably why your boss “almost” fired you. Because LOTS of people take an epidemic like this and turn it into a vacation. And *lots* of people can get a doctor’s note to be off work if a) they complain enough to their doctor, B) they pay for it, or C) they’re hypocondriacs or have a legitimate risk factor for wanting to avoid being exposed.
So in the case of the OP, your boss is an idiot, but at least you still have a paycheque. And they can’t fire you for being sick – especially if you have proof… unless you’re still on probation, in which case, you’re screwed.

I just know this from certain people around me who IMO believe very far-fetched things and yet let it alter their life. I’ve come to live with it but still find myself rolling my eyes when I hear them.

LOL! I know! I once met a girl who “couldn’t eat over-easy eggs” because of the “texture and consistency” which made her “Physically ill”, but she could sure swallow other stuff of a similar consistency and temperature without even gagging… 😉
