I’m so fed up with the criticism I hear about Nova Scotia. Everyone is Alberta this, Alberta that!! Here are things that make NS more desirable than Alberta:
-Better weather
-More physical beauty
-Way nicer, down to earth people
-Cheaper housing

Yeah yeah, Alberta has work and lower taxes, but people like to exaggerate about how much work there actually is. My 26-year-old daughter, who has a business degree and a work ethic to die for, went out to Calgary for two months and had to come back because she couldn’t get a job! The extreme high cost of living drained her savings and she had to move back home! No, she didn’t party it all away—she pounded the pavement and no one would give her a chance. So it’s not all rainbows out there. She was lucky to get her old job back because her lovely boss has the selfless Maritime soul and felt bad that she got so fucked over out there. -Scotia Gal

  1. I dunno… I lived in Ottawa years ago. The jobs were plentiful and the cost-of-living to salary ratio was better there. I missed the water and my friends and came back for those reasons.

  2. Not sure, but could she have not looked for work from here and kept her job until she found something. My buddy did this and left when he was offered a better job up North then he had here. It was all done online. I think it would have saved her a back load of money.

  3. cheaper housing?? Where??? I believe you must live on a native reserve and get help from the government or live in outskirt areas of HRM because nowhere in HRM, is it cheap to live other than in North end Dartmouth, spryfield or Uniacke Square. The cost of living is WAY higher in this province when you compare to the price of everything else and the tax.. This was the dumbest bitch EVER. and I’m a proud maritimer as well.. but a spade is a spade. Don’t know what year you’re living in, or city..

  4. Well… a couple years ago housing was cheaper… not sure what happened there since we’re losing population.. but whatevs. I like it here too, so I stayed. The only people that say the alberta is better crap are people that can’t find a great job here, and of THAT demographic 90% still like it here, just not the monies!

  5. Your daughter lived in Calgary for 2 months and couldn’t get one single fucking job?! Couldn’t get a job…in Calgary. Um, hate to be the bearer of bad news but….your precious little girl isn’t half as smart/hard-working/talented as you think she is.

  6. She probably has a shitty resume, MizzNyowie. You can have all the work ethic you want, but sometimes you just don’t make the grade.

  7. I spent 10 years in Calgary, laided off from 3 jobs…total time out of work was less than 1week

  8. I have literally had people offer me jobs while I was hitch hiking through Alberta.

And yeah the cost of living here is definitively higher than Edmonton, Montreal, or suburban Metro Vancouver.

I think MizzNyowie is probably right. You have an inflated perception of your daughter, and/or have never been west yourself.

I would venture to say that anyone who can’t find a job in Calgary isn’t looking.

I like it here, but the pay sucks.

  9. I miss the ocean, but don’t try to tell me the mountains, forests, and lakes in Alberta aren’t beautiful in their own way. I do hate the long winters in Alberta, but it’s nice to not have weeks and weeks of rain in the middle of summer.

I don’t live in the downtown core of Calgary, but my rent right now is cheaper than when I lived in south end Halifax. You can live in an absolute dump in the south end and pay a ton for rent.

I’ve met my share of assholes in Calgary, like a past neighbour’s landlord that threatened to kill me and my female room mates. In a city of over a million people I’ve also met tons of awesome people. I’ve worked with friendly people from different cultures and meet lots of people from the atlantic provinces.

I think your daughter expected to get an immediately high paying in a specific field. She could have found lots of other jobs while waiting for a more desirable job to become available.

  10. she’s holding out for the management position….can’t work at anything less until she gets it. Meanwhile, back at the ranch…..mom’s got ‘er back. (pun intended)
