  1. Sad there are likely cures for cancer, though much of the research is bought and suppressed by big pharma. Take heart, advances and new strategies beyond drugs are coming fast and furious. Check out nano technology, self-destructing viruses, and gene therapy as a start.

BTW, we’re all about to see some pretty crazy shit related to BPA come out in the next couple of years. One article my SO read indicated that manufacturers have known its carcinogenic effects for 30 years, and that many of the “green” initiatives that companies such as Coca Cola are going to be launching are aimed at curtailing the impact of these revelations on the perception of their products (and bottom line).

  2. Depends on what you mean by “cure” Three.
Cancer isn’t one disease. It’s a term applied to over 200 different ‘cancers’ each of which can have a variety of causes. It’s unlikely there will ever be a “cure” for cancer. The real goal is to prevent cancer, to detect cancer earlier, and to develop more effective treatments for cancer.
The drug companies do their part by developing drugs…most of which have dramatically increased cancer survival rates.
Most cancer research is not done by pharmaceutical companies though. It is funded by governments and charities and is conducted at universities and government labs without commercial interests and by people who very much want to eradicate the disease.
I’ll concede that there are several examples of Big Pharma behaving unethically. However, overall the contributions of drug companies and other cancer research institutions (supported by tax dollars and donations and corporate profits) have dramatically increased cancer survivability.
There is hope and there is progress. I think it does a disservice to all those who have suffered from cancer and who work in the cancer research industry to imply that there is some conspiracy or cover up keeping a “cure” off the streets in the interest of profit. It might happen once in a while, but the momentum is in the direction of making cancer preventable and survivable.

  3. Miles…did not mean to imply that there was a disease-wide cover-up, but there is far too much profit being made for big pharma to just sit by. Nor do I presume that there is only a single cancer entity that has many manifestations. I’ve been trying to err on the side of brevity because of my TLDR posts of the past. Guess I went too far the other way.

Yes, a lot of the research comes out of universities, but many of those universities are fighting to keep funding neutral or government in origin. Harvard Med (I think) just had a massive student revolt because of pharmaceutical funding for research, saying results were being dictated.

Yes, many of the drugs that have been created have extended the lives of cancer patients. But many of these same drugs also have crazy patents that block the production of generic varieties, ensuring the profit margins of the manufacturers, while bankrupting people in some countries and draining national health care in others.

There is also the innate conflict between companies whose products make people ill (such as Monsanto) owning out-right or holding massive stakes in the companies who produce the “cures” (Searle Pharma LLC).

Like you I am a proponent of healthy living and preventive medicine. I live by my words, but I don’t force my views on others. I support cancer research. I am happy to know that people are working to find cures (plural) and alternate drugs, viruses, and technologies to beat cancer.

And I, too, have been touched by cancer: Father, prostate (survivor); Paternal grandfather, liver (victim); Godfather, stomach x2 (survivor); Godmother, breast (survivor); Aunt, breast (survivor); Uncle, leukemia (victim); Uncle-in-law, prostate (victim); Uncle-in-law, pancreatic (victim)…plus my childhood dog, Sophie.

  4. Three, don’t tell all this to your radical cells, you’ll get them excited. You’ll be next.

  5. And I didn’t mean to imply that all of my comments were directed at you specifically Three. It’s just that I encounter a lot of people who strongly believe that Big Pharma is keeping the cure from us and are very distrustful of the research and health care system. They shouldn’t always be.

In my experience, corporate influence in the academic arena is very limited and minimal. It’s possible that certain areas of research (pharmacology/pharmacy) may be more prone to the influence of industry than others (cell biology/oncology/immunology, etc). Also, collaborations between industry and academia do not have to contain conflicts of interest and could potentially accelerate the transition from basic research to products on the shelf.

Also, since you brought it up Three, if you aren’t already aware, Canada is something of a leader in viral oncolytics.
The company in the link below is the commercialization of a discovery made in academia by a guy who is now a prof at Dal.

There are definitely lots of cool and exciting new anti-cancer strategies in development and the ideas are coming from university-based research, not the pharmaceutical industry. People should rest assured that their tax dollars and charitable contributions are being put to good use by people who are dedicated to finding cures for the diseases that plague our loved ones too.

    And Fuck Monsanto.

  6. lol Dino, I assure you it wasn’t me.

Although I agree with the OP that cancer is NOT HOT. And Lisa Raitt is a fucking cunt.

You only find out what public figures are really like when they don’t think anyone is listening. She only gives a shit about her career, no class, no tact… and certainly not worthy of her position. She even stooped so low as to turn on the waterworks for the cameras during her apology in a desperate attempt to save her career. Even the apology was all about HER; ME ME ME I SUFFERED BECAUSE OF CANCER FEEL SORRY FOR ME WAAHHH. Instead of owning up to what she said she tried to make herself the victim like a spineless coward. FUCK YOU Lisa Raitt, you worthless piece of crusty shit.
