Away for a stressful holiday to visit my ageing parents out West and while away two major snow storms happen. I hadn’t arranged any snow shovelling before leaving. I live alone. Although I live surrounded by neighbours with snow blowers I arrived home in the middle of the night to a blocked drive way and side-walk. I have no groceries and cannot get my car out. I spend hours shovelling what would have taken minutes for one of the neighbours using their machines… I think it is time for Halifax to give up the sanctimonious, self-congratulatory back-patting about how friendly this place is. Admit it Halifax – you’re not that nice… no, you’re not nice at all. —Wishing I could say Farewell to Nova Scotia

  1. Darling! When it comes to snow, it’s everyone for themselves… besides, there are time constraints and liability issues to consider. Get off your high horse and grab a shovel… this shit don’t clear itself!

  2. Was your visit a surprise from Santa? Were you whisked away on his sleigh by Rudolf in the middle of the night? Was there no opportunity to arrange for snow removal as well as ensuring there was food in the pantry?

  3. interesting how you choose to blame everyone else for your problem. There are numerous operations from which plowing services are available yet you did not take the personal responsibility to make arrangements to have your driveway cleared in the event of a snow fall while you were away, in the winter, when is snows. It appears as though you also failed to extended any effort in making arrangements with your neighbors, all of which allegedly have snowblowers. Instead, you chose to blame others for your situation.
I have no sympathy for you and based on this glimpse into your personality based on your ‘bitch’ no small wonder no one is eager to help you.
    Help those that helps themselves.

  4. Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. You don’t have a mouth to ask a neighbour or some to shovel you out when it snows?

  5. OP thought they had mind-reading neighbours. They are a rare breed, even in Nova Scotia. I prefer open communication to hoping to encounter mind-readers when I wish to convey something.

Charlie Brown: “grab a shovel… this shit don’t clear itself!” Actually it does, if you wait long enough. It takes about three months when it is January, or overnight with a good rainfall like we got Friday night. .

  6. You’re so entitled, OB. That’s part of the reason why people don’t always do nice things like this… spoiled brats like you expect it. Grow up and take some responsibility.

  7. Same thing happened to me last year except I pulled up to a completely cleared out driveway. Maybe it’s you.

  8. Hahaha! Point to Cranky.

Seriously, entitled much? You want your neighbours to help you out, OB? Maybe let them know you’re going to be away? Bake them some cookies, ask nicely, try not being a jerk? You sound like a jerk.

  9. A lesson learned. Next time you plan to leave town for holidays talk to someone you can trust that will clear out your driveway.

  10. Snow blowers are fun! If I had a house I’d do yours too, Most of the guys on my street growing up with the big blowers were more then happy to show off their big boy toys with the 15 horsepower power augured self propelled 28 speed blowers, Maybe I’m weird though I love things like lawn mowers and snow blowers, It is their job to clear their own snow though. I supposed if I did it for a living all day I’d hate it!
