All I wanted to do was go into the library, load a file from a jump drive and print it. I was told upstairs that, since I don’t have a library card, all I was required to do was get a temporary code and the rest would solve itself.

So I go to the info desk where I am met by the world’s most assumptive and pretentious bitch. She gave me this withering, passive aggressive shit-eating grin and told me that, yes, while I can do a one time print without one, I “needed” a library card. I said “No. I don’t.” she looked at me as if I was a retarded child with two heads and said “everyone needs a library card”. Once again, I reiterated my position. “No. I don’t. I do everything online.” Which is true. I use an online library to borrow books. Books that I read many times, I purchase or download. My vocabulary contains words like “kindle”, “torrent” and, on a bad day “Amazon”. She then tries to tell me that even regular use of “the internet” required a library card. With this stupid, pretentious smile of someone who THINKS they’ve got a handle on what’s going on.

I could have explained to this idiot the difference between regularly using the internet at the library, circa 1993 as opposed to using it at home, circa 2011. I was tempted to… considering the stupid, pretentious and self-righteous attitude she was puking at me. But instead I just said “Look woman, I don’t want a library card. Back off.”

1/2 an hour later, I wound up with one anyway. Printing a 4 page lease for my tenant wound up taking me the better part of an hour.

Frankly, it was none of her fucking business why I DID NOT WANT that card. Perhaps I was only in the province for the next month at which point I would be moving away and thinking about putting down any more roots here when I would just have to sever them later made me severely depressed. Perhaps I am terminally ill and am starting to shut down my connections instead of building them up. Perhaps I am an international spy and don’t FEEL like having an abundance of identification, or presenting my identification to just anybody. And by the way, one of those three things happens to be true. There are a number of very personal reasons why someone may not want to get yet ANOTHER piece of plastic to add to their psychotic collection of identification.

Regardless, it was none of her business WHY I didn’t want one. This idiotic bitch not only tried to make it her business, she acted mortally offended that I had any such business to begin with.

I’ll say this. Next time my printer is down and I have shit to print, I’m high-tailing my ass to a print shop where I will inevitably pay overinflated print costs. But it will be worth it to deal with staff who mind their own fucking business. —I Read More Than You Do, Twat

  1. Why would you now go to a print shop and pay when you now have a library card? This just goes to prove you can’t teach common sense. OB you’re an ass!!!

  2. Ah to be young and self entitled. At lunchtime when the library staff mingle, hopefully, she will regale everyone with a story about this cheap/stupid imbecile who came in all huffing and puffing with a jump drive to print off some files. The said imbecile was too cheap to own a functioning printer, but had plenty of money to buy books, whereas if they had a library card they could get the books for free from the library on line service.
I’m male, but if I was a female and you said “back off woman” you’d be able to tell me what the bindings of a dictionary tasted like as I rammed it down your gullet.
You might have gathered, I love the library and have always found the staff extremely knowledgeable and helpful, something that cannot be said about many people dealing with the public, some of who are pompous windbags like you.
Please do not use the word RETARDED as most people who regularly use this forum find it offensive.

  3. If you were not aware OP. Most things that you can do at the Library require having a card. Its not a big deal. The card is free and overall things are free at the Library.

  4. Why is the word retarded offensive? Oh thats right, we as a society decided it was offensive. In 10 years mentally challenged is going to be offensive, and we’re going to have to find some other flowery less offensive word for the same thing. Political correctness can blow me, I have no time for people that have so little to do that they find fault with perfectly good words. If my child ends up mentally challenged, I’m gonna call him/her a retard just to piss stupid people off!!!

  5. The “No. I don’t.” will not fly. Even if you were right and the desk person was wrong that little phrase sends me over the edge. You just turned yourself into a a Class A twat. Oh the bravado of “intelligence”. You know 1 more thing than the desk attendant and bam, out comes the No I don’t. You crass individual. A little finesse and tact would have probably gotten you to where you wanted to be faster.

    Yeah whatever OP.

  6. Tl:dr

    ShittyD-
Some people have a crazy idea that using demeaning language to describe a morally neutral medical confition demeans the people being referred to.
The fact that you blow up into such a tsunami of self-righteous frothery says more about you than what you’re freaking out about.
The fact you can’t understand that LANGUAGE IS A LIVING THING THAT CHANGES OVER TIME is a sad statement on who you are as a person. And your lack of empathy for other is pretty swell too.

But by all means, call your imaginary child a retard.
    Asshat.

  7. “A little finesse and tact would have probably gotten you to where you wanted to be faster. “

Donk’s right. I once convinced the guy at the circ desk at the library to let me take a book out on my mom’s card WITHOUT EVEN HAVING THE CARD WITH ME.

Took all of 30 seconds (and no, I *didn’t* have to show him my tits).

A printer costs maybe 20 bucks these days. Buy one.

    Asshole.

  8. I would have got the card….
and people would be surprised to learn that I actually only have one name:

    McLovin

  9. ay by…
me roof’s bee leakin’ so I retarded with some of dose new, fancied shingles, by.

    valid use in the maritimes…

  10. I have like 20 bucks worth of fines on my library card that have been there, unpaid since I was in grade 11. I took out a bunch of books for this business class taught by some DOLT and forgot about them in my car. I’ll be damned if I’m going to pay any money that is in any way connected to that god damn class or that moronic bitch, even if it was my own fault. I’m sure I can finagle myself a new one. This uncommon last name of mine might prevent me though 🙁

  11. Hey the OB has a point. They’re not really librarians and it’s not a library. It is the secret hideout of Canada’s pre-eminent spies. They’re the ones who come in the black helicopters.

    Paranoid much?

  12. occasionally you will need to remember your library card number, unless OB has a photographic memory, I don’t see what the issue is.

  13. I suspect yer arsy exhibits more than a few boot toe prints, OB. Gotta love this “I have the Internet, so I know it all” generation. Also, let me get this straight, you went to the library to take advantage of services offered, but then acted like a total dickhead? Mebbe a boot to the head, too, will teach you some manners, jackass.

  14. I want to know which of the 3 things are true. Is op terminally ill? A spy? Moving away?

My guess is moving away.. i’ll sort of feel like shit making such light of it if he/she is dying..

  15. @ wheeliep

Just because a negative connotation can be attached to a word, doesn’t mean that the word used in the right context is negative. Retard- means to delay, or in the case of someone with mental challenges, their learning capabilities are delayed or retarded. If I scream RETARD across a parking lot at someone; yes it’s negative, but if I use it as an adjective, why should that become automatically negative? It’s small minded people such as yourself that assume that I’m bashing or not empathizing with someone, which couldn’t be farther from the truth. I was only defending the English language, and it’s common misconceptions concerning context. But thanks for being small minded and personally attacking my character, it looks good on you. I wasn’t insulting anyone or anything, I was merely poking fun at the absurdity of changing terms due to social pressure.

  16. (snort) that is so ironic considering that it took me WEEKS to get a Halifax library card — and I really wanted one!

  17. Why didn’t you tell this lady that a person upstairs told you all you needed was a temporary code? She could call this person and drama avoided. Beside that, what’s wrong with a library card? You might need it again.

  18. I happen to sympathize with you OP. I think the gist of the story is, he went in to print a 4 page document which should have taken 10 minutes at the most, so then he was there for an hour just because some know it all twat decided to force a library card on him that he didn’t want. Could he have been a little more congenial? Maybe. I don’t really care. I think people should do their jobs instead of fucking wasting people’s time trying to push something on them that they don’t want. She sounds like a telemarketer, but worse, because he actually needed something from her. And OP, don’t expect much better service from those copy places, especially when you’re in a hurry. The amount of rigmarole you’ll have to put up with in those places is insane. So you might as well just get a printer.

  19. How many Staples/Kinko’s/Future Shops/Best Buys/Walmarts etc did this person drive past on their way to print, instead of ducking in and paying for a new printer?

  20. Go fuck yerself, ShittyD. People have the right to not be referred to in a negative way, especially by arseholes with a huge chip on their shoulder who feel it’s some Great Injustice they don’t get to say retard, cripple, kike, nigger, spic, wop or whatevs anymore.

  21. I don’t even know who half of those are supposed to offend….

    especially that last one…
I hear it all the time too.

    “whatevs” … such profanity.

  22. Go fuck yourself wheeliep, you pretentious little prick. Because you don’t agree with me you now have the nerve to call me racist. There is a huge difference between racial slurs and words that we have been TOLD are negative descriptive words. Words like cripple and retarded were not assigned their meanings because of any ill will toward the subject carrying that particular moniker. As intelligent human beings we are able to differentiate between a word used with malicious intent and one that is not, even if the word is exactly the same, using tone and context. Words like nigger, spick, whop or any other racial slur were born out of hatred for a certain race of people. If you think there is any correlation between the two you are dumber than I first thought. They are just words, get the fuck over yourself. How is handicap or “challenged” any better?
