The power was out here in Bedford on Monday. I came home around 6 pm to find the water off also. I thought it had something to do with the power outage. I called the water company and they sent a tech out to see what the problem was… they couldnt find a problem until their office informed the tech that it seems I owed $329 on my bill.
There was no warning. No letter. I had no idea that this was going to happen. So on the day the power went out here in Bedford and one of the coldest days of the year they decided to shut my water off too WITHOUT WARNING! When I phoned them they told me I should have received a notice in AUGUST! Here it is 5 months later and my water is off. I had taken my child to the doctor the day before and he was diagnosed with stomach flu. Can you imagine having a child with stomach flu at home and you can’t flush the toilet let alone give him a drink? You can bet he was dehydrated.
By the time I realized it was due to a delinquent bill it was after hours and I had no way of paying it. The company was not able to turn my water back on even though I had the money to pay for it. But a tech was able to come out to see what happened to my water. You do the math: a tech to turn off my water, a tech being sent out to find out what is wrong with my water, another tech to come out to have my water turned back on, how much would this cost? How much is it to have an operator phone me up to let me know that the water would be turned off if I did not pay my bill? I would venture to guess that the amount spent on this situation cost more than the damn $329 they were seeking! —Argghh

Ok…you didn’t find it odd that you haven’t been receiving water bills or notices or whatever since at least as far back as last August?….
I hate to say it, but this is your own damn fault. You know you have to pay for water, and if you had’ve kept on top of this, you’d be aware you have quite a heafty bill.
And the water company isn’t going to turn your water back on until you pay. If their office is closed and you cannot pay within the specified business hours well, too bad for you.

Yeah I don’t see how it’s the water company’s fault that you didn’t keep on top of your bills. Making sure your bills are paid up to date is your responsibility. You have a child, making sure they have water is the very least you should be doing. It’s incredible that you don’t feel this is even a little bit your fault; at least the tone of your bitch doesn’t reflect that. I’m only twenty, I have like 4 or 5 bills I have to keep track of paying. I have a list of them all, when they need to be paid by or when the amount will come out of my account. It’s not really that hard you moron.

I haven’t recieved a water bill, not this year, last year…the year before…no I haven’t recieved a water bill since I moved out here in 2002. That’s when i replaced the pump in my well, for less than $300.00.
I don’t have to put salt in it to ‘soften the water, I don’t have anything more than a simple screen that is cleanable by hand.
Because of my septic feild & my place being at most 2 people living here, I’m going to have my septic tank pumped this spring for the first time since I moved here….
Basicly what I’m saying is YOU DUMB ASSES IN THE CITY ARE BEING TAKEN FOR A RIDE WITH YOUR WATER/SEWAGE BILLS.

Cheaper alternative? Move into an apartment building that includes water in your monthly rent. No matter how much I use (and, shamefully, I do use a lot) the pay out’s always the same.
Also: More — I have a friend who lives in the sticks with a well and it’s a NIGHTMARE. We also have friends who have a well and they can’t even flush the toilets unless there’s a number two in there.
I’d rather have municipal water/sewage any day of the week (even if I do have to pay for it).
It didn’t occur to me that a Mom had to worry about water being shut off in the city–I knew power could be. Holy crap, you have more too worry about than not having a glass of water–your pipes can freeze up and burst, and then, you’ll have a much bigger bill to pay. I haven’t paid for water since way before it got so ridiculous. Landlords include it, I suspect, just so they won’t have to repair burst pipes.
Anyway, I know the bitch is about no notice, and I understand shit happens that causes you to have to put things on hold, but you said yourself, you need water (and you need power) when you have kids, so bills such as these are a priority. Especially considering the utility companies can pretty much do what they want. I mean, I have seen people’s power cut days before Christmas, so obviously, they are about money–mercy doesn’t pay.
No notice. Ok, so you didnt pay your bill since well before August. That is your fault. The final warning to shut water off is by REGISTERED MAIL, meaning you received it but probably didnt look at it because youve been IGNORING YOUR WATER BILLS.

I would love to hear people’s thoughts on what would happen if the water company didnt have the right to turn off water after bill delinquency… Oh right, NOBODY WOULD PAY and then a) we wouldnt have municipal water or b) it would go on everybody’s municipal taxes, (with a markup, of course, so HRM could once again take a cut). It’s not about $329, its about enforcing the rules to be fair for everyone. OH, and shutting on/off water is as simple as sticking a notched broom handle down your service stop in your front yard and turning it. jussayin.
Utility companies don’t give their product away for free, so I think they’re well within their rights to shut the water off.

OP, you should have been aware that you have not paid a water bill in a year – because a bill over $300 is about a year’s worth of water bills. If this is a home that you own and are not renting then you should have known the water bill exists, and since you called the Water commission and got the tech to come out I’m assuming your name is on the bill.
I do feel bad for you in one circumstance – when you called to inquire why your water was out – they should have seen it right away on your file that it was purposely turned off because it was in arrears and not wasted your time with a tech. And at that time they should have been able to take a credit card on the phone or at least a confirmation number that the bill was paid online through your debit account., and turned it back on for you.
What gets me is how OP didn’t clue in when the water was shut off. Whenever my cable or power used to go out, the first thought in my head was usually “oh shit, did I pay my bill?” Of course I had because I keep my bills up to date (‘magine that, OP!), but are you really that stunned or really don’t have any control over your finances to know you hadn’t paid a bill in over a year (as RC points out)?

Did you not noticed you hadn’t paid your bill since summer of last year? Its YOUR responsibility to make sure your bills are up-to-date, no one else is responsible for you. If you don’t pay your phone bill, you’ll be disconnected. If you don’t pay your power bill, you’ll be disconnected. It really is quite a simple concept. Pay your stuff ontime, and your stuff stays turned on. With things being able to be paid online, over the phone, in person, and via snail mail, there really is no excuse.
Dear Wankface – have you ever heard of a monthly budgetted amount? You talk to the Water folks and they determine your useage and each month that amount is deducted from your account, no problems there.

My rental company doesn’t raise rates — as long as you stay in your unit, you don’t see an increase. They guarantee it. And, they haven’t raised the rents, overall, in any of their buildings since they were built around 2003.
The water company said they did send notice. As well, just because you work 4-5 jobs and are a “single mom” you have no excuse for not clueing in and thinking “hay, I haven’t had a water bill in quite some time…”. Even if they were sending it to the wrong address (that’s been known to happen), you should’ve been more on top of it. I’m not blasting you because I think you were bitching about having to pay it, etc…I’m blasting you for the reason why you bitched — YOU were responsible for the bill and if you hadn’t received one in more than 6 months (longer if they sent out a warning letter in August), you had a responsibility to check up on it, and you didn’t. That was YOUR fault and you have no one to blame for the water commission turning your water off but yourself.

There is excuse to have your water turned of OP… that’s you not paying the bill. As mentioned, utility companies are offering a service/product, and they’re not free. You have to pay. And if you hadn’t received your bill in nearly 6 months of service, then it’s 100% your fault that your water was turned off – despite not giving you any warning. It is not the companies responsibility to persuade you to pay your bill on time – you should just do that on your own.
It’s highly neglectful with you being a mom and all, that you allowed a bill, as so important as WATER, go unpaid for so long.

The notice is implicit in the contract you “sign” when you start receiving water services- meaning that if you haven’t paid your bill in 35 or 40 days, your water will be shut off. No notice required. You were already told the time line.

I think the water bill comes every 3 months. I just bought a new house last year at the start of March – and I never seen a water bill by June – so I called the water commission and they realized it was still under the last owners name. I ended up being back billed for 3 months and the bill was $68. I just got my second water bill almost 6 months later and it was $106.
I said in my earlier post – that I agreed with the OP where the water company should have been able to turn her water back on ASAP – I feel for you OP in the sense that I have a 3 year old who I need water to cook his food and clean him, and so on. The water commission should have had a sign on your door trying to inform you of what was going to happen, and tried to reach you – did they not have your contact info?
People aren’t perfect OP…we all make mistakes…PK isn’t being mean…she just prefers people to own up to their actions and not pass the buck. I’m sorry that on such a crappy day & you had to go through what you did…especially with a sick child…everything always feels a thousand times worse with a sick child.

OP, you should know by now that some of the crew on board here don’t always respond kindly when posting, so in a way you should have expected some in-your-face responses to your bitch.
It is easy to forget that bills are due when you are trying to get through the demands of life (we all have them) but the bottom line: the onus is on you to make sure your bills are up to date, not the service provider’s.
Holy mother of fuck…… I have never seen the bitchers jump all over someone who has put themselves in an unfortunate situation like this! I feel bad for the OP… Not everyone in this world is totally organized- myself included. I have frequently gone to pay a bill only to realize that I have already paid it…. and vice versa. Sure, it’s not my best quality… but I suppose I make up for it in being organized in other ways.
Either way…. the long and short of it is… OP neglects her water bill (ok… irresponsible but still an oversight….) and receives no notices up to the point when it is simply shut off. No mailed notices, not phone calls (as far as we know…) Simply put… the bottom line is that, as per the OP… delinquent account or not… a necessary utility was simply shut off with no warning. Perhaps a call should have been given during the business day PRIOR to inform her that if there is no money received, the water would be shut off the following day. This would have given her the opportunity to negate the balance and start fresh. And by the way- try having an extremely sick child and attempt to get them out to a store (or anywhere for that matter) in the middle of winter. You know what children do when they are sick? They sleep.
Either way… whatever. OP… it sucks you had to learn a lesson under such harsh circumstances. I hope you were able to get through the situation with as little consequence as possible.

having your own home is cool, yes, but look at the extras that you have to shell out. oh, i forgot to add those damn property taxes, for land you don’t really own, just the top one fucking inch of ground. move to an apartment o.p., you thank yourself later. i have been here 7 years in may, and have had a very few problems, tenants or otherwise. we are like one big family here.
MmM the joys of apartment living, smelling what others are cooking. hearing their fights & toilets flush. Dealing with the fact that so many tenants are P I G S…or are at least in many cases, no where near as clean as pigs are !

so yes, i am here quite a bit, all i have to do is monitor stuff over the net. that’s why my security company is successful. i need no other people to do anything for me. when i’m not here, it is all automatically taken care of. even the reporting to the cops or whatever. my clients have faith in my system, and i have 3 systems going at all times.

Hey! I’m not completely heartless, Jonno, and the OP’s lack of water when she had a sick child on her hands was a really REALLY crummy situation. But, what we have here is a complete disregard for any personal responsibility (as RC pointed out: my ultimate pet peeve) — OP is blaming the water company for something that’s her own fault, that’s where my problem lies. Sure, none of us are perfect and have probably overlooked something and sure I’ve missed a bill or two here or there, but I wouldn’t presume to blame the bill company — I’d deal with the fact that I fucked up and I’d move on. I wouldn’t come on a bitch board and expect sympathy for something clearly of my own doing (intentional own doing or not). 🙂

Thanks for those who had the kind words and for the rest of ya.. especially buddy there with the all the water codes… Im sure someday something similar will happen to you or someone you care about and I can only hope that its not a sudden stressful situation where you question the reason or the lack of compassion behind it. I realize this is a bitch site but it seems to be the only place where someone can voice a wrong by a government agency. And water code guy if you work for the commission.. maybe its time the policy should be changed and give a person 24 hours notice before shutting the water off NOT 5 MONTHS NOTICE… DID YOU HEAR ME.. 5 MONTHS!!!!!! … whatever the case may be… I stand behind the fact that this should never happen to anyone in Nova Scotia or for that matter any other province in Canada. I think deep down everyone can see the wrong here and if not well I sincerely hope it doesnt happen to you.. it was a very upsetting for me and my family.

My God the repetition here with the regard to me not paying for the water bill…. I owned up to that.. it was irresponsible I totally agree that I should have paid the bill. Im not bitching about owing the money.. what is it that you dont get.. it was the fact that they shut the water off or they had the right to shut the water off with no notice in the middle of winter… its a health hazard!!! I dont think its rocket surgery here Ricky!!! Pay attention!!! I owed a bill… I should have paid it.. I received a bill on Monday Jan 24th which states that the amount due is in February.. and the water was shut off on Tuesday Jan 25th. There is no mention whatsoever on the bill that I need to pay the balance or the water would be shut off. If they had to give me notice I would have paid the bill and avoided the water being shut off.
The most pertinent issue here is the fact that no 24 hr notice was given. The fact that the commission sent a notice out in the summer but didn’t actually shut the water off until January says that there is a flaw in the system. By logical reasoning, according to this, it would suggest that anyone in the HRM could receive a notice, get it straightened out, but if they miss a payment or two later on they can shut your water off without notice??? Because they sent you a notice a year or two before??? Note that in Toronto, according to the bylaws, they can attach overdue accounts to your home taxes…in Cape Breton, they attach a note to your door stating that your water will be shut off in 24 hrs and if not paid community services can show up and evict you for living in unsanitary conditions…at least that’s what it was 3 years ago when I got a house off my brother for money he owed me and this showed up one day…F’n family!!!! Sorry, I digress…We as citizens of this fair city deserve better from our gov’t run organizations. Is 24 hour notice too much to ask for, whether by phone or stapled to your front door? They sent someone out to shut it off…wouldn’t it have been just as effective to send someone out to put a sign on the door? I have proudly served Canada in uniform, in areas where the citizens had no say in the way government treated them and I hope it never happens here. If the current policy isn’t working then it needs to change and if someone doesn’t speak up then who will? The entire issue here it would seem is not about the bill but how a government agency handled the situation. Kudos to you for bringing it up and don’t stop until the policy is changed.

Dear Survivor…. I don’t know how your water is turned on & or off. When i lived in that city, I remember it was a valve out by my driveway, with a square centre of this round metal top being where they put a ‘handle’ to turn it on & off.
Go measure the square part of the valve. (its the valve stem)
Buy a piece of square steel tube that will fit in the slot around the valve stem & over/around the square, attach handle, turn water on yourself. I know it can be done … I do not know if its legal to do so ~;)
Survivor – if indeed you do work 4 – 5 jobs, look after a small sick child, manage a household, you seem to have enough spare time to rebuff the bitchers; surely you could sacrifice a small amount of time to manage your bills?
My original suggestion of establishing a monthly budget account with the water folks seems reasonable and takes the stress out of paying re-curring bills. Which then might lead to your next rant of “those miserable banking bastards who wouldn’t permit a single mother of a sick child to go a tiny bit into overdraft because money wasn’t in my account and the water bill is now delinquent and I’m cut off”.
My son is fine now..thanks… he is survivor actually a survivor of cancer.. so when he gets sick mom gets a little stressed and when something like this happens you can bet my stress level was a bit high. As far as turning the water on myself.. I wouldnt do that.. and Bill and Ben.. I love this “I wasn’t warned”. Why should you be warned, it’s your responsibility. A company gives a warning as a courtesy, it’s not legally obliged to do so. The warning should have come month after month of not paying. You should have been saying to yourself “Where the hell is my water bill” and call to find out. I willing to bet letters went out and probably a registered letter which you ignored. Regardless, you fucked up majorly, not the utility.

Frankly, it doesn’t matter that you have a sick child or that you’re child previously had cancer. It’s going to sound brutal but nobody cares. The water company doesn’t care just like nobody on here really cares.
Sure its sad but everyone has different situations in life that makes for a good sob story. When you work in any service based industry, you hear stories like your 100 times a day and you just become numb to them.
You know that not paying your bill was stupid, but why should the water company hold your hand and double check to make sure you are paying your bills? You have a child… you should be responsible enough to handle looking after things like paying for things on time.
Furthermore, if you had the money… why didn’t you just pay the bill on time to begin with? It would have saved you a lot of trouble. When you signed the contract to get the water, you knew what the billing would be like… the company assumes that your a big enough girl to handle the payments. Do you really think they have time to call everyone they service to make sure that bills can be paid on time?
Everyone has a sad story, and its too bad but really what did you expect. I actually think they were being kind, waiting so long to cut the water. They sent you final notice in August… and they don’t cut the water until January that’s actually pretty nice in my books. If you had the cash, you should have handled the situation then.

When we, as a mass culture, think about single mothers. Often we think of the worst stereotype… you know the ones… The self-entitled person who thinks that they are not accountable because they have a child. Or if they are accountable… they deserve special treatment because the have a child. These “single mothers” always fit into the lower economic brackets of life as well. That is a crappy stereotype and its so frustrating to me because there are so many GREAT single moms who do pay their bills on time and don’t use their children to garner sympathy.

I personally think that there should have been at least a 24 hour notice to give you a chance to pay your bill before cutting off the water, or any other utility at that. The matter that you were sent a bill in August stating that they were going to shut your water off and waited 5 months to actually do it is ridiculous! They sent you a notice then why not this time?? There is definately something wrong with the water company if they choose to treat their customers like this.. and for those of you that are gonna comment on this statement.. go ahead, for it is not going to change my opinion about the water company.. and yes I do agree that the bill should’ve been paid, but thats not the issue here.. the issue is not giving a customer notice that they were going to shut the utility off in the middle of the winter and the customer not having a chance to pay it at the current moment to avoid the situation!! If I came home and found my water turned off yeah I’d be ticked off, it does suck not having water. However, once I realized that it was turned off (sick kid or not) because I hadn’t paid my bill I’d be kicking myself in the arse for not being more on top of it. I have no one to blame but myself. Sure it was an even suckier situation with the power being off, that was an unfortunate secondary circumstance. It generally isn’t the tech’s responsibility to advise of cancellation of service. S/he was sent out to do a job. Yeah, someone at the office should have noticed the cancellation of service prior to dispatching a tech. And how do you know they didn’t try to contact you? Were they one of those “unkown name” phone numbers many of us ignore when they call? Did they send you a letter that went unopened? The responsible thing would have been to have picked up the phone and called them to arrange payment for your unpaid account BEFORE you got shut off. Hopefully lesson learned so you, and your son, don’t have to go through this again.
Like I said before I very much doubt there was no notice. More like the notices were ignored, not that they have to give out notice. Five months without paying your water bill and not once did you think “wow where’s my bill”? Hell in my work I’ve gone away for months at a time but I ensure arrangements are made so my bills are paid. It’s called RESPONSIBILITY.

As for sending a tech out to your house and not checking on an online system… if there were power problems, maybe the office computers were down and that was the fastest way to check on the problem. Water utilities, like all other bureaucracies, make mistakes. Perhaps in this case, like the OP says, there was no notice.
I think for things like water and power and heat, especially in the winter months, there should be safeguards to ensure that lives aren’t put in jeopardy. We aren’t talking about a credit card company or a department store account.
I know it doesn’t apply in this case, but I DO have a problem with the water utility shutting off the water when people can’t pay their bills. There must be some other way.
Big screen TVs, late model automobiles and health club memberships are optional luxuries, drinking water and heat (in the winter) are the necessities of life.

If there was a “no shut off” policy, no one would pay their water bills. Utilities aren’t free. Water may be an essential service, but food is essential too, and I don’t see anyone arguing that people should be able to go into a grocery store and grab what they want and not pay for it.

Where do you think that came from and why would you think that a balance from a bill three months ago would now magically be due in yet ANOTHER month? What does “past due” mean to you? I will help you out by explaining that it means that the balance was due previously, not currently. I have had my water disconnected in the past for non-payment, it’s not nice but it was my own fault and there were notices in the mail and calls made to my home and cell phone. I was well aware of the situation and when my bill was received and it indicated a past due amount, I knew what that meant. Sick kid? Awwwww… that’s too bad. You must be the only person in the entire HRM that is a single mom with a sick kid. You should make that case known to all your utilities, credit card companies, your cable and internet provider, the gas stations you use, grocery stores you frequent, so they can rally around and provide you with free goods and services because you’re single and your kid has the flu. I’m sick of hearing about that shit. I was a single mother on welfare working a 40 hour week for minimum wage because welfare wasn’t enough to live on, my child has asthma, I spent a lot of time in the IWK but I still managed and nobody held my hand. I have worked hard, went back to school, got off welfare, found an amazing job and now I live in a beautiful house on a lake with a couple acres of land and my bills are still paid. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished but I never, ever used my past as an excuse to avoid what I owe. You are ridiculous, your replies are ridiculous, and the situation you’re crying about is ridiculous but I must admit, it did make my day. Good luck in the future and here is a helpful hint, if you get a piece of paper and make a list of all the bills you have to pay, the due dates and the amounts, you will probably never get yourself in a predicament like this again. I’m really sorry Survivor about your child being sick…I’m happy to hear that he’s a survivor. I can’t imagine in a million years having to deal with my little guy getting cancer…I can barely make it through his flu’s & colds…because kids are so helpless when their sick. I know if my child had cancer I’d probably forget about the water, power, visa – you name it bill. I hope he stays cancer free forever.
Survivor wrote: “I received a bill on Monday Jan 24th which states that the amount due is in February.. and the water was shut off on Tuesday Jan 25th. There is no mention whatsoever on the bill that I need to pay the balance or the water would be shut off. If they had to give me notice I would have paid the bill and avoided the water being shut off.”
So from what I read in this statement is that you would have only paid your water utility bill IF they gave you notice. Not just because you KNEW you owed them, but, only if they gave you notice of disconnection. You know what? I call shenanigans!! If you hadn’t received a bill for as long as you claim, on the bill you received on January 24th, there would have been a past due balance. A past due balance indicates an amount owing IMMEDIATELY… not until you receive a notice. You are just simply not responsible enough to stay on top of your bills – and you are trying to garner attention for sympathy.
To put an end to this saga, I called the Water Folks, this is what you do when you’re retired, partially senile and the beer in the fridge isn’t quite at the right temperature.
The bottom line is Survivor is 100% responsible for the water being cut-off. The customer service guy explained their policy and it is not as draconian as Survivor would have us believe. I realise he is going to put the water dept spin on it, much like Survivor and her grammatically challenged other personality tiffanypoirier did.
There are a host of arrangements available to avoid a repeat of this situation, but in order to use them they assume that your hat size and IQ numbers aren’t the same.

I misplaced my water bill twice in the last two years, both times I got phone calls from the water comm., and letters reminding me to pay. Everybody agrees it isn’t the lack of funds to pay, just your negligence and placing blame on others. Time to put on your big girl pants and own up that you let it slide, disregarded any notices you received.

Thanks Life sucks.. ya got that right!! And I do okay …but you dont realize what happens to people out there until it happens to you. It was an eye opener for me. I wasnt just concerned about the water being shut off it was that they shut it off when there was a power outage.. and no notice!! The bill arrived the day before they shut the water off (January)… it was due in February..YOu would think something that is considered a necessity would at least have the courtesy of letting the customer be aware of their intentions to give a person a chance to pay the bill before it happens. I would have done what I could to pay the bill rather than have family at home going without water. This was either a mistake that they wont own up to or the Halifax Water Commission just dont care about their customers. They dug up my front yard in the fall and poured rocks around the water main that will be fun when I go to mow the lawn in the summer. My fence was torn away from the yard for them to get at the sewer… it was left that way. There was no notice they were going to do this and I almost lost my dog until I realized the rain bucket they threw in the middle of the lawn was an indication something was wrong. There is more to this story and why Im pissed. Like I said until it happens to you you dont realize that it happens to others out there and nothing is done about it. They get to do what they want and get away with it. It may not be news here but Im sure it can be somewhere else.

What’s having no power got to do with your water getting turned off? There’s no electricity so you cannot boil it to make tea or pasta; cannot turn on a coffee machine; can’t put it in the freezer to make ice.
And the two are not related. The water company and the power company are different entities. The decision to turn the water off was not based on you not having power. Electricity can go off at any time for any reason. The way you’re going on about it makes me think that you believe it was a conspiracy on the utilities’ behalf just to get you or to victimize you. You’re not a victim here.
If you believe that the water company or power company owes you any memo that your service will be cut-off then one can argue that you should have nailed a note or taped it on the water/power company’s door yourself. Stop being such a cry-baby hypocrite.

Holy fuck, no wonder Survivor forgets her bills. She actually believes that people in apartments get their utilities for free. Hey dummy, utilities included doesn’t mean free. It means these bills are calculated, along with municipal taxes and becomes part of the rent. In fact it costs a little more (landlords don’t do things from the goodness of their hearts), but for worryfree living it’s worth it and you’ll never lose water or electricity (depending on NSP LOL), unless we are like you and forget to pay our rent because we weren’t sent a bill or some other nonsense.

Survivor… do you realize how many times you have contradicted yourself in what you’ve said and replied. In your original post, you said that you had received a bill since August therefore didn’t pay… and now in response to my last post, you said that you did pay. Um, shenaningans.
And why is it that all you can seem to do is just call everyone names like an elementary school girl? We get it, you don’t have to repeat yourself. You got your bill in January and they shut off your water in February. BUT, what you don’t understand is that it was your pathetic and stupid actions that then to that happening in the first place. Regarding TOUS* who should receive the most credit?
Should it be the original poster who makes the bitch and defends it against all respondents?
Or should it be those respondents, who, with repeated comments contribute as much to the length as the original poster?
I need to know because we have a few TOUS* on this website and clearly some kind of recognition is in order. The Coast must use the traffic statistics (ie. visits/comments) to sell advertising and for that reason I think The Coast could contribute to some kind of prize for winning bitches/threads.
There are some obvious nominees (I don’t quite know how to categorize them). Those who are routinely listed in the sidebar as “Top Commenters” should, of course, qualify for something. Then there are individuals like Montrealman and Survivor, whose comments catalyze further discussion and comment.
I think Survivor would be an obvious choice for the Tenacity Trophy.

My new hot water tank was defective that my plumber was trying to install on Sunday and I got stuck with no hot water for 24 hours….it was really rough…and I could at least boil the cold water and flush….I can’t imagine going without water in general for a whole evening…so I completely sympathize with you Survivor. But I have to ask – when you got that letter that you keep repeat posting from August 27th,2010 – why didn’t you pay at that time? That was a notice/warning letting you know what would be done if the bill went unpaid….who the heck waits for a notice on their door before they pay and overdue bill? Also this wasn’t a few months…any bill over $350 has to be for a least a year of water service. I sympathize with you – but your upset over proper protocol on the water company’s part….you should be upset with yourself for neglecting that bill. No Hugo…I got a good one…with a 10 year warranty…I checked around at all the kents/H-Depot/Costco and went with a good GE brand. And I’m on municipal water so I’m good in that department. My water heater was 11 years old and I didn’t want to chance it going when I’m on maternity leave. …I also went with a larger one that’s a little over-kill. 🙂

It is wrong to shut someone’s water off without notice and yes I have paid on my bill before the water was shut off. The notice in August clearly states that I would be given 24 hour notice before they shut my water off to pay the bill (which I did not receive). I am not disputing the fact that I should have been more diligent in paying the bill however, to come and shut the water off without some kind of notice is wrong. I am sure it cost the company more to send a tech out to shut the water off then another to find out why the water was shut off and then yet another to turn it back on… its ridiculous. I moved back from out west where the water bill was attached to the power bill, I am not used to paying water separately and in Nova Scotia it only comes every 4 months. Yes, I completely forgot about it until the bill arrived the day before they shut my water off… I have lived in a few cities here in Canada and never ever have I had such nastiness as what I have met with on here. I did well out west and came back because of all the advertisement (of which your tax dollars were spent) with how many jobs were available here. I came back with what I had with my son and tried to find a good steady job however it wasnt very easy and ended up struggling for awhile. Now, I am more aware of how this city takes care of its people. With the attitudes on here it shows me what kind of people are here. Not all of Nova Scotia is like this I know that but the general consensus speaks volumes.
“Forgetting” and “not being used to the way things work here” are excuses that I don’t think the water commission takes to heart, I’m afraid.

Plus, anyone with their own water well doesn’t have water in a power outage. The wells run on electricity. At least ours did when I lived at my parents.
So while it all sucks, the power outage card has zero to do with the water and furthermore why would it be the HWC’s to verify if someone has power before turning off their water?

Taken at face value, leakey-faucet’s comment suggests a number of possibilities for a communication failure between HRWC and Survivor. And I believe this was the reason for the original bitch.
That the bill was owed was never in question. It was the rapidity with which the situation escalated to a water shutoff with no communication with the person who owed the money.
We all expect folks to pay their bills. Perhaps all that was missing in this case, as Survivor has stated, was reasonable notice before the shutoff.
That’s given C.E … that there may have indeed been a communication failure, but things happen, and survivor doesn’t seem to understand that. She/he should file a complaint and take it up with them. I’m tired of reading about it. Is the water back on now? Yes. Did Survivor and child survive the ordeal? Yes. I think we need to remember we’re not entitled to anything in this world and in fact everything we have could be taken away in an instant. If the HRM can make a mistake and pretty up the situation by saying its because of lack of staff or computers generating shut offs then what makes you think you are safe? The “attachment” is to imaginary real estate. Survivor believes this nonspace belongs to her. Everyone else here knows the difference, but she doesn’t. She is compelled to come back agaian and again, especially after days of us talking about everything *but* her, and remind us she believes this is her property. She reminds me of someone who can’t draw the distinction between a wrestler in the ring, and him in the parking lot. All the evidence and proof is there that it’s all smoke, mirrors, and bubble gum, yet she can’t let go.

Key words “as if”. “As if” , as in assumption made without full comprehension of my mind, and even less of your own. You completely missed the point. Congratulating yourself on your grammar skills using a spelling error.
Anglospec is right, grammar/spelling being 100% correct is not important. But it helps when crowing about your own skills. Normally I strive to comment only upon personal spelling/grammar errors at LTWWB, but was compelled to say something when an idiotic attempt at self-back-patting was being made about one’s good command of the english language while demonstrating the opposite. I have no fear you will keep on doing it. How can you not?

I haven’t shot anything of the subject for awhile due to a greasy promoter making me completely creeped out. The wrestlers and workers are fantastic mostly. Hard workers and honourable men and women. Management I don’t trust. A guy name Kowboy Mike Hughes brought me into his dressing in 08, and opened alot of doors for me in dressing rooms with 3 different feds. I owe him a lot for trusting me to shoot the real deal backstage. I have a great shot of HTM the night he almost lost his finger. Hmmm. Maybe that hould be my profile pic…

There are a handful of Feds in NS/PEI/NB. Many of the guys work for at least 3 or 4 different promotions.
There are some wrestlers who have no talent and would be a risk to work with, but many guys have studied and respect the business, and the guys who came before them.
Of the 5 different promotions, there is only one promoter I don’t trust, due to some shady business practices and some moral weirdness.

Aye west to calgary, got bored of not being able to work in halifax, move over here and got a job straight away and generally enjoying it for a change. Shame I loved halifax but it was like an old girlfriend that just didn’t want to move on, sometimes we all need a lil change.
What Anglo.. was it difficult finding a job in Halifax? Go figure.. this is what happens to most Nova Scotians we must go away to get ahead. Beautiful spot but unless the mind set of people change there wont be any change in the labour market. Look at you leaving because of work when they are about to immigrate over 7000 people to fill jobs. I am at a loss of words when it comes to this province. Good luck there.. I love Calgary. No sense suffering here when you can thrive elsewhere. BTW… I guess everyone’s water bill will be increasing in this province (heh).
