WTF is going on with rents in the north end! Just because some fool wrote in some stupid mag that the Hydrostone was a unique area to live, we now have greedy idiots with ads stating “rare opportunity to live in highly sought after area”! Give me a fucking break, I’m 57 and lived in the NE for ages and keep hearing all this shit about greed, there is nothing unique or rare about it! We have one small block of stores and restaurants and tiny old houses which need a lot of repair, so fuck off with your stupid rare and unique shit!!! The NE is no more unique then any other parts of this city. You’re only driving good folks away to other parts because of your fucking greed!! Fuck, what is happening to this small city with it’s greed. Plus if you’re going to rent a 1bdrm shit hole for 900, put a fucking deck and washer n dryer in the fucking place so you can a least justify your greed! Now god help us all, we have the ship building which will further heighten this greedy shit more! —Ashamed of the NE and Greedy Landlords

  1. agreed, the rents are going crazy. my mortgage payment on our little hovel is less than most rentals

  2. Its not just the north end its everywhere and housing is going the same. Who that actually grew up here can afford a half a million dollar house? My friend works for the royal bank as a mortgage specialist, he said 90% of people buying these houses are asian immigrants. No-one from around here can afford to live here and it will get A LOT worse before it gets any better

  3. I grew up in the north end have lived in plenty of other places. there is nothing unique about it accept for maybe the greed that someone took to the next level because they heard one little half compliment about their neighborhood

  4. there’s a lot of new development in the area, not sure of the rental prices

  5. Its not just there.
Out here in early 2000’s, a waterfront lot of about 2 acres was less than 20 grand. So I bought 3 of them & got a better deal. Now the few lots still available & these are unserviced lots & I’ve recently heard from neighbors that they are looking for 90,000 a lot ! 90 Grand to live out in the damn boonies & you still need to build a house, put in a septic feild, well etc !!!

  6. land is very valuable, no matter where it is. our house isn’t worth as much as the property

  7. no shit…
though it’s happening all over halifax.I started in south end 8 yrs ago and, in looking at moving back to the shoebox I started in… rent since I’ve lived there has gone up 20%… parking went up as well…

There’s a fucking story for NS commercials encouraging people to move here:

I had to move to ghetto “stabby-ville” in a shitty, run down apartment building just to keep my rent reasonable enough to be able to afford liquor!
    So when are YOU coming?

  8. it’s a fairly common picture, i’ve been all over the place with my avatars these days. i’m sad and my brain hurts, plus the shop is back to being a meat locker^^

  9. My rent is going up by 30 whole bucks NEXT february. Our landlord gave us one year’s notice.

It’ll be 10 years since the building opened when the rent rates go up and this is the first increase thus far.

You just gotta find the right rental company. Ours is fantastic and their rents are super competitive, which is why there are never any vacancies.

And HAY, I coined the term “Stabby-Ville” mr zed — don’t be going and using my terms without proper respect.

  10. shanky-town
    shiv central
    poke-a-bloke
    knife-a-wife
    cut-a-slut

    they’re all good.
    I’ll use variety going forward.

  11. As a NE homeowner who is looking to sell in about 5 years, I say jack up the prices in this area all you want.

  12. So true! I wish we had some sort of regulations on rents- they are completely out of control. Fucking fuck.

  13. having lived down there, i know what you mean o.p., the place was nice once, a long, long time ago. now it is becoming another slum, like the most part of halifax is. i just wish there was a major wind storm, to knock it all down. then maybe this city, would start to put up half decent housing, no slums, or public housing. because we all know, that’s where most of the criminals get their start.
time to raze this city to it’s foundations, and start from scratch.

  14. Ridiculous mainland rent prices – Hub Unit & I thought about selling in a few years but I’d rather put up with squealing, incontinent billygoats kicking beer cans on the deck in Hillbilly Hollow than be held financial hostage by some greedy landlord. Besides, I’d miss our annual Lobster Fisting Festival.

  15. You live in Sheet Harbour TTFN?

Why are you sad PG, because of the dog?
Meat locker = No heat at the shop?

  16. i agree o.p., the north end now sucks. back in the day, after ww2, it was a nice place to live. but then so was most of halifux. now, all you have are ashole wannabes, driving around in little shitty cars, trying to act like a gangsta. it is so fucking pathetic of them. and the look they have, even more so. yep, leval halifax, and try again.

  17. My rent in Calgary close to downtown is less than lots of places in south end Halifax. And trust me, you guys are not getting the same services, transit, proximity to events, etc. as I am right now lol. Pure greed in Halifax no matter where you go it seems.

  18. I’d like to turn this bitch into a drinking game, and take a shot everytime the OP says “greed”

  19. Agreed. I plan to move in December and I want to stay in the NE very much but when you look up “north end” and “2 bdrm”, the price goes from 750 to 1000. It’s not that great here either, just close to everything I need…
