Ok, serious bitch here. In 2015, most of us get to enjoy a feb16 stat holiday, something that 6 other provinces are already doing.
But guess what? This is not a federal statutory holiday, it is a valid holiday in our NS labour code, so most of us get the time off or the holiday pay and then some.
Did you know that federally regulated companies like banks, airlines, and railways don’t have to abide by ns labour code, so therefore they don’t have to observer the holiday. My wife is clerical for one such company and she is getting shafted….because they can.
I can see why they might not want to pay out provincial holidays to pilots, and maintenance staff that fly all over canada.
But my wife is different. She doesn’t get paid well. She lives and works in NS. Her job has never required her to set a foot outside this province. The thought that she will be denied a manditory holiday for provincially regulated business is a slap in the face. —pissed off

February 16th – Dat be an important day! It falls just two days after da valentines vodka-binge… one family size box of chocolates later and a realization that you’re one year closer to dying alone. Da 16th be when I come out of my booze-fueled sugar-induced stupor and start my master cleanse. I’m ’bout to be one sour bitch if I gotta go to work on lemon water and cayenne peppa!
Call in sick.
For unionized workplaces the collective agreement dictates paid holidays for employees. Many agreements included ”family day if proclaimed”. Those who had not had the foresight to put this in their agreement during a previous round lost out and will wait until the next round of negotiations.
I’m not sure who you are talking to but here are the regs on Stat holidays in NS and who is exempt. BTW banks and government workers get more paid holidays than the six stats of NS.

Who or what does the February 16th. federal holiday commemorate? Why do only six other provinces observe it? What are the ones which don’t? Why don’t they? Write back soon.
Ah, Nova Scotia’s answer to Ontario’s Family Day and Quebec’s St. Jean-Luc Picard Day; only we’ll have to pay homage to a boat or a fish rather than family or French people.
Sadly, most bankers are not covered by CBAs and therefore do not benefit from provincial holidays, unless they have a nice boss.
What this guys’ wife might not have told him or she might not have known is a big reason we’re (yea i’m a dirty government worker too) not getting the holiday yet is because we’re still in the process of negotiating the big union contract and since it’s a new holiday, it’s not included in the old contract we’re currently using as a staple.
it’s not a slap in the face, it’s the rules baby! Ya gotta take the good things with the bad. I’ve gotten along without a february stat holiday so far and my world’s still fine now. I’ll just use my vacation time for which we are given for things like this and take the day off, no biggie.
Now shut the fuck up and quit adding to the stigma we’re a bunch of prissy whiners.
-Hazardously content with the cool shit he gets.
Instead of calling Feb. 16th “Heritage Day”, it really should be called “Viola Desmond Day”. Fits nicely in with African Heritage month.
Liberals really dropped the ball on this one.
It definitely should have been purge day.
A survey of media coverage of this issue:
“A modern tragedy of epic proportions!” – I.P.Knightley, The Daily Scrambler
“The defining issue of our time!” – Rusty Bedsprings, The National Curmudgeon
“There can be no rest until justice is done!” – Ina B. There, The International Punter
Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day aren’t stat holidays, OB – does your wife bitch about those days, too?
Boy I can’t wait to sleep in on February 16 after a night of drinking and farting.
As someone who falls under federal employment standards, I will be getting paid for the holiday. Booourns to your wife’s shitty boss and may he/she get shingles on his/her private parts.
OB probably doesn’t have a wife. Probably has a gold fish instead.
