Was there a memo I missed, in which all single 20-some boys were informed the best way to impress a girl on a first date was to take her out for sushi? Listen up: this does NOT make you creative or different or even a big spender because hey, I have no guarentee till the bill coems if you are actually going to pay for my half (meaning I feel awkward as generally I can’t afford sushi prices from anythign but the mall), and then if you do and it was expensive I worry that you expect something. clearly I’m overthinking this, but boys, honestly- find a new schtick. this is getting old when you all do it.

Now don’t get me wrong, sushi is delicious: but I don’t like it that much. and the assumption that i’m always down for some raw fish makes me wonder why you’re dating me in the first place- wouldn’t it be more conducive if you offered me some nice hot sausage or something?

Doesn’t want the spicy tuna

  1. Personnally I like a Pub/Tavern type place for a first date. I like sushi on occaision. Also if I invite you for dinner it should be my treat since I’m the invitor. Maybe thats just some old fashion idea that I picked up from my Dad, but thats my interpretation. Guess my notion is that cooked food makes for a better first conversation 🙂

  2. I would love it if boys would ask me out for sushi.Oh well. I’ll get some cheap nigiri in Vancouver on Thursday.

  3. Personally I think that it at least shows that the boys are into something different, which means that if I’m picking the restaurant for the 2nd date, I’m not going to worry about finding a place with a clubhouse or steak on the menu. So I’m all for boys taking me for sushi, it’s also a good place to go for a date because you’re not going to just order a salad, and you’re not going to feel disgustingly full afterwards.

  4. I think sushi is a good option too. Not too much food, something a little different than boring ole chicken pasta or whatever, a nice quiet atmosphere that stimulates good conversation…

  5. Well, Trevor, she DID say she’d like to be offered some nice hot sausage. She is really sending mixed messages, huh?

  6. I’m on the fence on this one. I think they think they are being a little inventive and romantic instead of just being themselves. But I’ve been on a date where the guy took me to a pizza joint, got a large pizza, offerered me none of it (just the offer is what I wanted)made ME pay for ALL of it, and took the leftovers home for later. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not old fashioned and am willing to pay sometimes, but not all of it EVERY time and then him take the doggy bag home for later. Oy vey. So needless to say, I think I would rather a sushi date (as long as I was asked first — not everyone’s forte). Hope your dates get better though!!! And guys, think up some better ways to have a nice dinner date!!! Girls like steak and potatoes too!! 😉

  7. I usually date girls that have the ability to say “No I’d rather not eat sushi tonight, lets go to X instead”. In other words the ability to say “no”.”and then if you do and it was expensive I worry that you expect something.”That’s a little strange.

  8. Here’s a thought. Maybe actually tell said “boy” you’d rather have hot suasage than sushi? You know … communicate?Yes … clearly you are over thinking this.
