No more Operation Red Nose? Well it’s about time. I never could understand why we used taxpayers’ money to provide free rides for the drunks. Hey, you wanna drink yourself into oblivion? Arrange for a cab. But I doubt you would do that since you can’t see that far ahead of yourself and your lousy booze. Better yet, walk—it might sober your drunk ass up. I got nothin against people drinkin if that’s their choice but I draw the line at enabling drunkards by providing a free ride home. About friggen time is all I can say!!! —If You’re Old Enough to Drink You’re Old Enough to be Responsible for Your Own Ride

  1. Well I have no love for drinking drivers for sure but I always thought the Operation Red Nose was an enabling thing too. Not sure the alkies will ever pre arrange their rides home on their own since most drunks require a mommy 24/7. New Years Eve would be a great time to put the cops out in full force and nab the drinking drivers. Think of all the cash they could make on one night and maybe teach the drunks a lesson all at once!

  2. It may be an enabling thing, but it does a service for those of us on the road who don’t want to die because some assfuck decides to drink and drive.

Without this service people who are just barely drunk (drunk enough to plough into someone walking across the street, for example, because their reaction time is impaired) will have reason to ‘rationalize’ and be all “Oh I’m ok to drive!” instead of calling the red-nosers, because that service isn’t there.

I’d rather be alive than teach people who decide to drink without alt arrangements a lesson. I’m sure you’d feel the same way after a loved one is killed by a drunk driver (I’ve had two loved ones killed by a drunk driver).

Sometimes being ‘right’ isn’t worth it.

  3. I can’t drink alcohol because of the Med’s I’m on.
Which has made me a popular request to attend parties …. for the obvious reason , to be a DD

  4. Agree with PK 100 million%. This service is there because it is damn near impossible to get a cab on NYE. You wanna complain to someone, try the cabbies who refuse to work when they are most needed.

  5. I hope they get more Cops out in the field and drag their drunk asses in. Fine them to the hilt and take away their vehicles. Operation Rednose is like putting a band aid on a gusher. Senseless to me.

  6. No OP, it just creates more opportunity some pickled jackass to slip behind the wheel and kill somebody. Plain and simple.

  7. but op, your genius observation loses sight of one small detail.

it’s not the drunks drunks are killing when they drive drunk because they spent their cab fair on booze.

it’s those of us who aren’t drunk but are driving, biking or walking.

this isn’t about preserving their lives. It’s about preserving ours.
