Why is it that there is nothing open in downtown Halifax before 7 am. I want a decent cup of coffee ( see: NOT tims ) before 7 am i have to go to Macdonald’s of all places on SGR.
i would much rather give my money to a local mom and pop than a corporate machine like MCd’ but in that part of town, at that hour they seem to be the only ones open for business. C’mon Halifax. In larger cities some people are already in the office working by 7 am and not just getting up!
PS – If anyone knows of a place downtown I am missing please fill me in.

The Montreal Grill in the basement of the Bank of Montreal Towers (across from Perks – shudder!) opens at 6 a.m. – it has great coffee and cheap, stomach-friendly breakfasts.

It’s such a good place to eat, I just had to post that twice – heh-heh.
It’s not “downtown” downtown, but the ardmore is open pretty early on quinpool. delicious omelettes.
I think the Daily Grind on Spring Garden is open pretty early. They have awesome food.
If you weren’t too snooty to drink Tim’s you wouldn’t have a problem.
Don’t know too many ma and pop stores that can stay open 24/7. Try again.
I don’t think the op is snotty, C Mike Hunt, she just likes coffee, not the crap they swill over at Tim’s.
Um… Tim’s isn’t coffee. *avoids objects thrown by co-workers*I’m sorry, but Tim’s is more like Coffee Drink. In those coffee commercials, where the kids run into the kitchen and they open the fridge. One says “We have coffee-stuff, and coffee.” I was NOT the kid in the background who said “I want some of that coffee stuff…”It’s not being snooty, its called taste.
I agree, Some people love tims “coffee”. but for me it just doesn’t taste life coffee. Its not the worst thing in the world but if you are craving a good cup of coffee tims won’t cut it. Coffee inspired drink it exactly right!Mike Hunt – I don’t think it has anything to do with snooty, its a matter of preference. I am sure the OP is not looking for a $5 latte to show off while he sits on the hood of his BMW. Just a good cup of coffee that doesn’t trigger your gag reflexKay – The OP wasn’t looking for a 24/7 mom and pop, just one that opens earlier then 7 am. And kudos to the OP for wanting to support a local merchant over “Big Food”.
You could always go to Sobeys, but a case of rich coffee and make it yourself in five minutes…Better than Tims and far cheaper…
Yes… and very convenient and logical to do when you are on your way to work at 6 am in downtown Halifax as the OP was. Can’t poke a hole in that logic. ( heavy on the Sarcasm )
I you are up at that hour how hard is it a make a travel thermos of coffee?Be it you are going out at 6am or leaving at 4pm if you have hot water and a container you can make the beveradge. If you have time to go meandering town looking for an overpriced cup of coffee you can spend the time to prepare yourself a cup before you head out in the morning.Best part of waking up is that Gimpy’s always right…That’s a good slogan….
Although I will add that MacDonalds does have surprisingly good coffee
Tim Horton’s coffee is the most wretched swill I’ve ever had the misfortune to abuse my poor taste buds with. How anyone can drink that vile shit juice is beyond me. I will agree that McD’s makes a decent cup of java. Now if could only ignore their McMassiveCoronary breakfast menu.
Vancouver had awesome coffee shops open bright and early in the mornings. And Tim Horton’s is near non existent out there, yah!Halifax is just too hung over in the mornings to contemplate serving ‘good’ coffee.
Man, people have a hard on against Tim’s. It’s just a matter of taste. I don’t think it’s great coffee, but it’s got enough caffeine to get the job done, and it’s cheap. I personally think Starbucks is god awful, tastes burnt, and is way overpriced. They’ve got coffee makers now that have their own timer, and some of them come with their own travel mug or thermos. That’s really probably your best bet, just get it ready the night before, then fill your boots.
I work in a coffee shop and we open at 7 and we are lucky if we see 5 people between 7-8 so I dont think it would be worth it to the independant owners to open their shops before 7. Not that many people in halifax work before that so their really is no need. PLUS all coffee shops sell bags of their own coffee,..you should just buy a bag, they cam grind it for you and ta da!!!! you now have your fav coffee for when you wake up, Halifax isnt going to change because some lazy ass wants their particular cup of coffee in the am but cannot even press start on a coffee machine to make it themselves….
