  1. Me Too!there are some whacked bosses out there. I know there are always 3 sides to a story, but it really sounds like you are better off without this fruit cake!

  2. Sounds like sensitivity isn’t her strong suit. I think she could have cut you a little slack rather than fire you (unless you had been bawling every day for a month straight – then I could she her point). It can be extremely difficult to divorce yourself from personal problems when you’re at work – you should have been allowed the time to sort with whatever you had to deal with. But just remember, Number One, karma will one day bite her on the ass big time. Guaranteed.

  3. I had a nut cake boss once who was a complete hypochondriac, if you had a sore back – she broke her back and was suffering from chonic pain, if you had a stomach ailment – she had IBS, if you had a sore toe, she had cut hers off and it never heal properly and had some “mysterious” infection. And god help us all if you had to suffer through a meeting with her, one minute she would be talking like an adult- then she would flip and speak like some baby, and if she thought you were laughing at her she would scream at you.I don’t know what qualifies as management these days, but I think with our dimensioning working population- Owners and Bosses would/should want to take a look at their management styles and training.or we are just going to continue to lose people to “out west”

  4. Looks like. You can’t keep good people if you don’t treat them well. Some owners/managers think that minimum wage entitles them to be fucking dictators.

  5. Sounds like you got fired because you arent stable to begin with. Maybe waitressing isnt your thing darling. Try working with laundry at the dry cleaners or something. Maybe they’ll let you cry all day long. Get a life, and a career.

  6. I’ll tell you the name of the coffee shop mother establishment…I have no fear…it’s PERKS. I worked there for a year a few years ago, and I would never recommend anyone go there to work EVER. There is a severe lack of communication between management and staff, every time you go in there the staff is different because people quit or get fired left right and center (mostly they quit), and as for the mother? WHAT A HORRIBLE TROLL she is!! Kisses all of the mucky-muck’s asses from the business district and treats everyone else like something she scraped off of the bottom of her shoes. As for the way she treats the staff? Well my god, if you don’t stand at attention when she comes waltzing through the doors, then heaven help you! She will nit pick every little fucking detail and regard you as SHIT if your a mere worker there. Complete self-absorbed bitch, period. As for the owner’s sister? Well…apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. PS…be very wary of the cakes and cookies you eat there…they have mice and there’s little poops inside the donut display case ALL THE TIME…they scrape the topping off of the cheesecake in the morning and redecorate it to sell…it’s a fucking hole.So that’s my two cents. My threadjacking here is done. LOL :)~

  7. Mother Lode isn’t at Perk’s but she’s not too far away. The name of the place rhymes with ‘Doody’s’ and the owner uses his underaged kids to work there in the summer. And get this – the kids get to push around the minimum wagers too. Imagine taking abuse from a fucking ten year old. Then there’s this other place up the road from Exhibition Park, just outside town – a supposedly nice little tea room type place – the owner treats her staff like idiot slaves, making them fed her kids when the place is full of customers. Worst of all, the kitchen is absolutely filthy, according to a friend of mine who had the misfortune to work there.

  8. That is the MOST disgusting thing I have ever seen about Perks!!! Mice poop!!! I am going to GAG! Wasn’t there a recent article in the paper about a lot of food establishments that were just not up to proper hygiene standards. I am surprised this place did not get reported.

  9. What Halifax needs is a website for people to rat on lousy bosses and their dirty establishments. Now that I’ve heard about Perk’s, I’ll always think of lemon poppy seed muffins as ‘lemon poopy seed muffins’. That’ll keep me away for sure.

  10. 99% of food establishments have mice… its what they do with the food to prevent the mice from contaminating it!that whole Perks think is NO suprise- was. the staff ALWAYS looked miserable, and it’s not that they are shitty workers- they are unhappy!Luc- I think you are on to something about the “bad boss website”A few years back I worked at a restaurant on the Dartmouth waterfront and the manager there was insane!- if you were not one of her “groupies” she’d make your life a fuckin’ hell. She would spy on you in the staff room with her little “spies” and then she come up to you freak out about what her “spies” had overheard. She was the most unprofessional piece of work I have EVER had the misfortune of working with. And to boot she was like some Tavern Waitress from the 70’s trying to pretend she was “Fine Dining”, and it was a family affair -she had her sister as one of her supervisors. I bet if you went there today they’d still be there… the view of halifax is good and the food is not bad but don’t look for great service from the waitress cause she has her bus people do all her work and she keeps all the money!

  11. I will never go to Perks again…I’ve ate plenty of there pastries and cookies….so I guess I’ve ate plenty of fucking rat shit!! I’m going to puke in my mouth…If this is true, I’m pissed….To Fuck with Perks.

  12. Never liked Perks very much anyway. Overpriced java compared to numerous places in the area. As Jeanne pointed out, the workers always look unhappy which is probably a refection of the self-important asshats who get off on the whole power trip of ‘lording’ it over ‘the little people’.Now I wonder who really gets the tips from the saucer.

  13. Well, how do I identify the place with the craziest boss in the world without coming right out and saying it? Clues…it is located on the busiest pedestrian street in the city. It is also the best people-watching spot in the city. After you finish your first cup of coffee and you want some more…I think that will do.Luc – Seriously, the bad boss website…we have sites for doctors, teachers, I think it is about time.

  14. Must be Tim Hortons – a second cup of coffee at Starbucks would cost a mortgage payment. I think there’s a few websites featuring just what we’ve been yakking about – bad bosses. Everyone’s had ’em. I worked for a megacheapskate German dude who docked me four minutes for running across the street for a sandwich. This guy gave no breaks, no overtime, 1/2 lunchs and his sad-eyed kids would always be asking me for something to eat. He was the ultimate prick – his wife was a nasty perfectionist who ran us to fucking death. I was young and stupid enough to put up with their shit for a year. My only regret: I didn’t call Child Services about the way they treated those poor kids. The business always came first.

  15. I used to work for the Mic Mac Amateur Aquatic Club, and my bosses (aka: Board members) were a bunch assholes. I was verbally abused and my personal security was jeopardy. I was in tears many days. The President of the club was an ego maniac to boot. And mice poop….. don’t ever eat there. Many a times they should have been shut down !

  16. Well, it is probably best not to let people think it is Tim’s with the psycho boss. Second Cup SGR it is…luckily Second Cup is franchised, so any other location is fine as far as I know.

  17. Man, I had a boss that fired me because he didn’t like me. He sexually assaulted one of my coworkers and then fired her while she was in the hospital for not showing up to work. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to leave the house without a little empathy.

  18. First off, just because someone is crying does not make them unstable. Shit happens to people, hence people cry about it. The one problem, though, is that certain industries do not have time for personal problems, espcially the food industry. It doesn’t make it right, just reality.BUT, there are crazy bosses out there, we’ve all had them! I had a boss once who works at a certain downtown coffee shop who used to yell at us in front of the customers, hired and lost 12 staff in one month, call from home in a tranquilized state so stoned that she couldn’t follow the conversation, tell us about her sex life with her husband, tell us we were getting a raise one week and then say we aren’t ready for it the next, etc, etc, etc. You wouldn’t even believe it all if I told you. The funniest part of all of it is once I got fed up with it and was going to quit that day (since I had another job lined up already…) she fired me because she said she was worried about my mental state?!? I was so shocked I didn’t even know what to say except laugh. What I did do is move on to bigger and better things and never set foot in that coffee shop again and warned everyone I knew not to work or buy coffee there. Number One Waitress, I hope you do the same.

  19. Karen (& Others), please let us know so we don’t mistakenly patronize their businesses!!

  20. I wonder if that’s the coffee shop where a certain owner’s mother works – I’ve seen this broad in action – she’s a nasty piece of work – she’s rude to customers, overcharges whenever possible and treats the staff like shit on a shoe yet, there she is, while employees come and go. Go fucking figure.

  21. Please oh please….somebody tell me where these places are…Coffee shop mother- I only know of one along the waterfront???? and Karen -I am almost 100% sure of the place your are talking about- I used to buy pastries from a lady like that and I would bet my life savings it was her…she would talk about her husband and her in a hottub!!! and I was her customer!

  22. Theoretically, you should be able to cry every now and then whenever you want. Man or woman, I think it makes you a better person. But, in realistic terms, I think that there is a very strong prejudice against it. People automatically tag you as being a weak sister. It’s seen as an embarrassment rather than a fact of life.

  23. You’d think a small business would be a little more sympathetic, wouldn’t you? In my experience, the absolute worst places to work are the mom-pop outfits with assorted family members throwing their collective weight aroung. I’ve yet to see one minimum wage person treated well under those circumstances.

  24. If you were too emotional to work you were too emotional to work.Considering that you admitted that you couldn’t deal with work because you were too emotional.Maybe your coworkers bitched and complained about you and this was the straw that broke the cammel’s back so to speak.I know that at the restaurant that I work in you wouldn’t believe the back biting and eye stabbing that goes on if someone misses a shift for WHATEVER reason.

  25. yeah, there is another Mom & Pop coffee shop along the waterfront – they don’t seem to treat their emplyees to bad, aside from sitting there and watching them. I sat there and had a coffee a couple times and its as though they think the staff are going to steal right in front of them. They will just sit there watching…and watching… and watching. it’s kind of weird.but seriously other than that I have never witness this family treat their staff bad, and for the most part everyone seems happy enough there.

  26. Glad to hear of one good outfit, kj – my experiences with ‘family businesses’ over the last twenty plus years have been a less than pleasant experience. Years ago I worked for this dude who got romatically involved with one of his employees – nice enough guy until this nasty bitch got her ugly claws into him. Anyone who she thought had slighted her were either fired or belittled to the point of quitting. Needless to say, there is karma because he’s since gone bankrupt and his bleached blonde bimbo took off to find herself another mark. Then there’s the guy who owned a a second hand clothing place. His wife was so fucking paranoid, she was actually proud of the fact she didn’t have friends. She watched every move we employees made, making sure her hubby (a real nice man)knew that we were stealing her blind. Actually, there was nothing at that store even worth stealing unless you liked bright florescent granny square ponchos or vinyl platform shoes. Later I found out that she had a baaaaaddddd coke problem which probably didn’t help her state of mind.Still, if it hadn’t been for the shit jobs, I wouldn’t have gone back to school in order to train for better paying work. So many there’s a purpose to it all.

  27. Thats funny, a girl the other day told me she got fired from perks for wearing the wrong colored belt to work. i guess the things i hear arent over exagerrated.

  28. this is the number one waitress, and It wasnt Tims or the second cup, im not gonna say where the place was, im not that mean, but she was a bitch for letting me go the way she did, does it make since, ( I have to let you go because you were mot professional, But you can use me as a reference because you are a great waitress) is she not fucked in the head or What?????)
